Ok yeah your right it would be quite pointless, the air would be my portable machine. I just want something I can take notes on but is still powerful enough to do cs work on. I want to get the 13inch MBA with 8gb of ram and the 256gb ssd. I have the external cd/dvd drive for my mini so disks won't be a problem. Would I be best to use the money saved on the MBA to get a cinema display or are there better monitors out there for cheaper?

There are always cheaper monitors out there. If you are strictly coding, the Cinema/Thunderbolt Display may be a bit much, however it is always a great option. If you do any video or photo editing the ACD is a great Display. For a $1000 though, you could get 2 27in monitors for less that would be great for coding.

But like I said, if you are doing anything creative (photo/video editing, etc.) the ACD is very nice. Honestly, if you have the money, I would go for the ACD, if not any monitor will suffice

Well right now I'm working on a 32inch vizio TV. I would like to ditch it and have a dual monitor setup. I would have no idea what types of monitors to get. Any ideas?

Alright thanks do you think that i could use my mba for all of the stuff you said but hse my upgraded mac mini with 8gb of ram and 256gb ssd for all of the heavy lifting? I also plan to buy an ipad at some point. But im goimg to put parallels on my mini so i can run multiple os's. Am i crazy?

Honstly, there's not a lot of "heavy lifting" that a MacBook air can't do. I would be more concerned with hard drive space. Also, think long and hard about an iPad. The only time I've ever used one was so I didn't have to print out a PDF, it was hardly worth the time it took me to borrow it from my university's library.

If you can, get 2 identical monitors. Nothing's more annoying than 2 monitors that are a quarter inch different in height. Even if you get 2 $200 monitors from WalMart.

Alright well I think Im not going to get the iPad it seems that it would just be a waste thinking about it. But have you ever heard of cinema view monitors? it looks just like the ACD but is $500? Im also taking a look at Dell Ultrasharp monitors. I figure I could just airplay my MBA screen over and do my work at night and then take the MBA to school during the day. What do you think?

to be honest.. for programming (non color critical) work, i think spending 500 bucks (tax included) and get 2 28inch 1900x1200 monitors is a much better deal.

this is my windows setup at the moment.. 1 goes to DVI and the other to HDMI. I am wondering though.. I can do that w/ the MBA? I got a 13inch MBA on order.. supposed to arrive this thursday. :)

Yeah see Im with you. I really like the idea of having 2 monitors for my work, I like reference materials on one monitor and the program in the other. Im doing my research, but I can't seem to find a monitor that I like.

Agreed. I didn't know if the OP was doing anything creative or strictly coding. I only suggest the ACD if he is also into video/photo editing

Depending on the size (and if you want to go dual monitors)...

23in:

27in:

*For any of these you would need something like this...

Im sure you can find a cheaper one on Monoprice or some similar site.

Unfortunately I don't know of any dual monitor setup running off an Air that doesn't involve thunderbolt (perhaps someone knows of a way or an adapter). The only way to go dual monitor would be off the Mini

Honestly I strictly code and do light web browsing. No video/photo work. I code right papers and turn in assignments over the web. Thats about it, thats why I decided I don't really need all of the power the rMBP has, even though it would be awesome I think my bank account would be better off getting the MBA.

Well you know what I could do? I could run the dual off the mini but hook up the apple tv to one of the monitors and just airplay it over as soon as Mountain lion comes out couldn't I?

I don't think so. The Macbook Air only has a single DP out, you might have to put reference material on the air's display, and get a stand so it's at the same height. Or buy 2 apple displays so you can daisy-chain them

Depending on how airplay works, there might be a lot of lag. Or, it might not have a lot of lag, but it probably won't be super fast.

Of course, if you'll be living in a dorm room, forget about using wireless anything, unless it's internet sharing via bluetooth or something. Most school's IT departments are pretty strict.

dunno if i can post links.. but here's the one that i have (2 of them):

http://www.amazon.com/Hanns-HZ281HP...8&qid=1340086678&sr=8-1&keywords=hannsg+hz281

of course.. UPS screwed up on shipping on my 1st try so I had to order again.. but in the end.. they have been wonderful for my line of work for the last couple of months.
Alright thanks Ill look into it!

Honestly I don't plan on living on campus. Im going to get an apartment so the internet should be no big deal. For now I just live at home.

It seems feasible. If you can put up with the lag it may be worth it. The Apple TV isn't that expensive anyways and can be used for other things besides Airplay

You think there will be a substantial amount of lag? True I will also use it for my entertainment system so bonus there.

As a CS student who uses a laptop with a lower-resolution screen than the 13" Macbook Air, I can assure you that you're wrong. For the first few years of school, your programs aren't much more advanced than System.out.println("Hello World");

The only time I have trouble with my 1366x768 screen is when I'm trying to develop for tablets, as having an emulator open pretty much takes up the whole screen - but you'll have that issue no matter what screen size you use, so just be aware that developing for an iPad will require you have a 2nd monitor unless you wanna have fun switching back and forth all of the time.

Of course, my roommate who has an internship was given a laptop with a 1080p screen. Seriously, that's an extra 180 vertical pixels.

Of course, one of my professors uses a macbook air connected to an apple display in his office as his main computer.

In all honesty, just make sure that the air you get has a 256GB SSD, minimum. If it's your main computer you'll run out of space faster than you would expect. Especially if you put a game or two on it.

Don't forget how taxing implementing bubble sort and quick sort is when sorting an array with 30,000 elements. That's going to need a 12 core mac pro at least.

Seriously, I would have killed for an 11" Air with an external monitor when I was at University 12 years ago. I had to make do with a Celeron 300 MHz and a 14" 1240x1024 monitor or something similar. I think it had like 64 MB of memory. Developers not sure what hardware they need? What has this world come to?

A 2009 computer would be powerful enough. Apple Cinema Display? Seriously?

I've developed daily with the 13" for a year. Great (little) machine. No external monitor in use.

Thanks man the input helps me further my decision. What's your machines specs?

Going from base 13/4/128 to base 13/8/128.

A bigger disk would've been swell, but I prefer the i5's to the i7's (2011 i5 models ran cooler than the i7; could be same with 2012 ones) and the price increase was quite steep (extra 300€). Thinking of supplementing the laptop with the fastest 32-64GB usb3 stick or an usb3+ssd/hdd combination for storing extra data (Virtual Machines mostly).

I like the sound of that! I think I'm going to use google drive or drop box for my applications. Or store my stuff in an external drive.

Depending on the internet speed, it could be a few milliseconds or a few seconds

Slightly off topic but relevant I think to this thread. On a new MacBook Air with Lion installed, how much free space do you get with a 128GB SSD?

Thanks
