Macbook air M1 chrome stuttering

Look at 'Stats for nerds' when playing YouTube. Is it decoding VP9 which should be default and less taxing. Or, AV1 if you explicitly configure YouTube to prefer AV1 and more taxing. Have zero issue with VP9 4K60 HDR on 16GB MBA M1.

This is vp9 in 4k60 fps. It's not a performance issue but rather the way chrome renders the video I think.

It's only with more taxing AV1 4K60 videos where issues start to crop up. Even VP9 8K60 is playable at ~90% while AV1 8K60 is unplayable since it's choppy throughout.

Can we download youtube videos in 4k60? I thought it was not possible at least not on pc. I also want to ask if there is another way to use youtube? (app download) on mac I am new in the apple universe . I tested the same two videos in 1440p60 and no worries with chrome (almost perfect) I think that the 8gb of ram do not allow me with chrome to enjoy the 4k60.

Oh I can see what you mean with that video and yes, it isn't present in Safari indeed. Report it to Google along with that example video.

Can we download youtube videos in 4k60?

That would probably be my next suggestion. Boot your MBA M1 in safe mode then try playing the videos with IINA. You can download the YouTube videos on your Windows device and share with the MBA M1. You'll need youtube-dl and ffmpeg. I put the four executables in one folder.

Thank you very much, I will test this as soon as I have time, I also tried another browser based on chromium edge and brave. And the problem is exactly the same as with chrome. There is only safari that works perfectly for youtube for example.

I'm going to give Firefox a chance too, I had probably wrongly had the impression that it was a little "abandoned" browser. Thanks for the comment

Make sure you install the M1 version of Chrome. No issue here and works better than Safari.

Just discovered that myself today... Googled what issues may be known before I asked on here and presto; there's a fair few YT videos all stating the lag issues and that you've to download Chrome for the M1 Macs

Did that; zero issues and no glitchy Chrome at all; very impressed
