Observed a few of these cases with the M1 Air & MBP and those that have documented there seems to be a relationship with the Thunderbolt ports failing taking the Mac down. I wonder if the users utilised 3rd party charging solutions. It could be as simple as that as although USB C charging seemingly standardised in my experience it's far from that with cables and power supplies yielding differing results.

I've had no issue on my side and always used the specific charger for the MBP.

There was an early issue with the M1 MacBooks and Big Sur where third party chargers were frying the occasional MacBook motherboard. It was fixed on a fairly early version of Big Sur though. There was a long thread about it here on MR. I wonder if the OP was using a very old version of macOS.

Edit: This is probably the thread I was thinking of: M1 MacBook Air Won't Power On

Edit 2: Fixed in 11.2.2 published by Apple on Feb 25, 2021.

Seems like an ongoing thing, but without any numbers just a best guess...

At least in thread I posted in the edits, most of the posts about failures stopped after the Big Sur update was released. I suspect that normal hardware faults can explain the rest.

Thx, I remember Apple patched the FW. Still see the odd few and I wonder if the flickering Touchbar on the MBP is related as that could also be factor as some have reported associated Thunderbolt failure. Either way I tend to be cautious and only use Apple's provided charger and their dongles to be on the safe side, unless it's just a basic USB C to A adapter.

I also consider that keeping OS updates to a minimum i.e. last point release of the OS is a wise move for Mac's with the T2 chip. That and I've done enough beta testing for Apple over the years 😂
