Just so you know, the MBA does not have a fan.

While I understand this has already been proven completely inaccurate several times in this thread already, I am very curious where you obtained this information from?

you should be able to see the keys with the light from the screen. it might be a different story if you have a silicone keyboard cover tho. just try it at the apple store and decide.

Good luck getting the Apple store to turn off all their lights.

I use my MBP 13" when I am laying down on my bed at night with the lights off and the back lit keyboard is perfect for it.
I tried turning off the keyboard lights to see if I could see the keys from the lights coming off the screen and I can't unless I change the angle of the screen so that the opening angle is like 45 degrees. It's a pain to angle it down everytime I want to type.

So I have to wait and hope for the next revision to have it.
Please Apple, bring back the back lit keyboard.

FWIW: The keycap lettering is more reflective on the new Airs than it was on the backlit previous generations of Air.

I too liked my previous Air with the backlit keyboard, and when I considered getting the new one, I was worried about the lack of backlighting and tried the same experiment of turning off the backlight and trying to read the keys by the display lighting. It didn't work out too well.:(

However, I purchased the new Air anyway and was relieved to see that the key labels were very reflective and could be read by the light of the display when necessary. Normally, I touch-type and don't look at the keys, but occasionally when surfing the net I quickly type something with just 1 finger and need to see the keys to do that. It works fine for me.
