The ultimates will still fetch a good price, the rest I don't think so.

It better be giving you a good price. Don't forget you paid $400 or $500 more up front to get the so called "ultimate" (depending or 11" or 13"). Your selling price in the future has to be $400 or 500 more just to break even with the base model.

Say in a year, the base model is indeed worth $450, and you'll need to sell you "ultimate" for ~$900. Meanwhile, people can buy the next generation base model for $1000, which will make your "ultimate" look like antique.

if you want the best bang for your buck you should sell before the new model comes out.

My iPad I posted on craigslist just to see what I would get and I could have gotten 450 for the 16gb model. Granted I have all the accessories it came with and box, and it's in literally BRAND NEW condiiton, still 50 dollars for 7 months of ownership to me is cheap. If I want until the new iPad drops that number will drop significantly. Now that I have my new MBA I'll likely sell my iPad until the new one comes out, if I even decide to buy the version.

Factor in tax though and it's around 540 to own one brand new.

Another school of thought - the less you spend now, the less you lose. Every extra $£€ you spend on getting a better model will have to go at a discount because you are selling a used machine.

E.g if you spent $xxx on upgrading the HD to the max available now, it will be worth a lot less when you come to sell if aftermarket upgrades become available and capacities/speeds increase.

There are just too many variables and unknowns to give you a decent prediction right now. Just buy the machine you want and need right now and worry about resale value if and when it happens.

people who buy used are generally not very knowledgeable or very knowledgeable.

The very knowledgeable one will pick up a good used mac that had apple care for a good price, I check 10 times a day for used stuff. When a deal comes up I'm picking it up within an hour.

For the not so knowledgeable buyer they want to get into the mac market as cheap as possible and will give you almost no price premiums for upgraded apple products.

Buy what you need, nothing more.

Another great way to get more for your apple stuff is to add adapters and hdmi cable that you can for cheap from china. Add a Mini DP to HDMI adapter, HDMI cable, cheap case and other stuff. Since they are not so knowledgeable they may pay a premium for the extra stuff.
