rumors so far have only talked about a harddisk upgrade.

it would be very strange if there was no processor upgrade - why would apple keep the inferior, 65nm C2D that obviously has heat issues?!?!

because it takes time to redesign the logic board for the new package size and the macbook and macbook pro are the priority since they sell tens times as many units. fingers crossed, though...

well, if the story on the front page is correct:

- M96, MB543LL/A $1,799.00 - MacBook Air
Well then... they can keep their stuff for themselves.

I mean... I'm an Air fan as anyone, but I'm not going to shell out 1799$ (equivalent in Swiss Franc) for 1 USB, no audio-in, small HD, integrated Intel graphics and a lowly five hours or so of battery runtime. I don't need all the ports and bells and whistles for a portable. Really, I'd be perfectly happy with the innards on the MBA. But even with a nice display and keyboard, I'm not going to shell out way more than 1500$.

If I am not mistaken, there won't be any new package size?!

Maybe you've read that Anandtech story from around february? I thought that was the point of using custom CPUs: getting them in the right, smaller package size (same as SL C2D use now), even though Intel wasn't ready to move production to 45nm process then...

22mm x 22mm-- i guess you're right. maybe it's just the factories running full tilt on macbooks and macbook pros?

well Insider says "No cpu update"

Which bites,

But i'm curious as to the new SSD (not the HD-I already know they blow :D )

Cuz, there's some really interesting things happening in this arena.

Apparently, the new MLC SSD drives have some problems, all except the new Intel ones which are supposedly extremely fast and desirable (according to Anandtech).

Also, they say Samsung's new 'SLC's' are also good, apparently (but pricey)

FWIW, AppleInsider and DaringFireball are reporting a new graphics chipset in addition to the drive.

Updated MacBook Airs will see no aesthetic or CPU changes, which will remain at 1.6GHz and 1.83GHz. They will, however, include NVIDIA's 9400M graphics chipset and offer larger hard drives: a 120 GB disk in the low-end model and a 128 GB solid-state drive in the high-end model.

well Insider says "No cpu update"

I have to correct you on this - Appleinsider quotes Gruber from Daringfireball who says:

"CPU performance remains more or less unchanged across the board: (...) 1.6 / 1.83 GHz for the MacBook Air."

The current C2D used in the MBA operates at 1.6 and 1.8 (and not 1.83 Ghz). 1.6 and 1.83 Ghz would mean that (as I hoped/predicted) Apple indeed will update the CPU and use the LV C2D 45nm processor instead of the current custom-made 65nm solution.

The update wouldn't bring a large increase in performance but solve the heat issues and bring better battery life...

EDIT: Correct me if I'm wrong but I assume that the custom-made form factor is something pretty costly for Apple. My assumption is that if they use the new NVIDIA Chipset, that doesn't need a seperate North- and Southbridge but only uses one chip, there might be enough space on the logic board for a "regular-sized" FCBGA6 CPU.

EDIT2: I just noticed that the Penryn LV C2D actually operates at 1866 Mhz. 1.83 Ghz stated by Insider et al seems therefore to be a typo cause the current MBA runs at 1.8Ghz and there is no such thing as a 1.83Ghz Penryn.

I am a bit suprised about a lack of an update.

But then again, the Mac Mini is a bit long in the tooth these days.

But the Air has heat issues, no doubt, so it's more 'pressing'.

who knows-- the source may have seen 1.6 & 1.8 and assumed they weren't changing the CPU because they were unfamiliar with the intel roadmap and the move to 45nm. also-- apple has been known to release false information to see which divisions are leaking. until Steve walks on that stage we'll never know for sure...

At Apple retail stores, they typically stop selling the old when they get the new in stock. The old goes back to the depot and is then sold online as refurbed (even though it's new).

"Apple just announced that the MacBook Air is getting an update to the new NVIDIA 9400M graphics system, as well as new 120GB hard drive and 128GB SSD drive options. The Air is also moving from microDVI to mini DisplayPort, like all of the Apple's machines. The base model is still $1799, and there's a $2499 version with a 1.86GHz Core 2 Duo and SSD which'll be out in early November."

Well, that's a nice supplemental update. I'm more than happy with my current 1.8/SSD MBA, however I'd like to see how the new Nvidia 9400M performs in the real world
