Genuine Apple replacements for my BlackBook start at £85 - more than twice price I paid for it - hence, never going to happen!

They show up on Ebay at prices closer to what I mentioned.

At the price you mentioned, I'd go NewerTech. I've never bought a blackbook battery from them(I should, as the battery in one of mine swelled and it doesn't currently have one) but the otherwise identical WhiteBook batteries I've bought have been great. I'm running one in my 5,2(mid-2009) and it's working great and fits just like an Apple battery.

FWiW I can confirm that on my 4,1 MBP indeed the CPU throttle aprox. 50% without a battery. I just compared it with Geekbench 4 and i got almost double score in Multi-core score. I wasn't aware of that behaviour but that explains why i noticed that it run much cooler :D.

Maybe i will take it out again as i really don't need that much horsepower and the side effect of running cool could be beneficial to prolong the lifespan of that machine.

FWIW, Installing an unregistered copy of CoolBook will allow you to monitor the CPU speed stepping and voltage.

Registering will allow you to control the stepping and override the default throttling.

Thanks...I'm selling it on though - I like to have a laptop that functions as it should but the battery prices are bonkers ;)

Time for some updates:

I bought Dronecatcher the black MB. He were so nice to make the ebay bid for Spain, since it was originaly U.K. only.

On the waiting I found a cheap black new battery on Amazon at 32.8 Euros. To have a "working" one for the test, and avoid the halfCPU speed woes.

Since June I have a broken white macbook battery, and after watching some Utube videos on rebuilding them I realize they arent as simple as the round models, but with the "broken" included and the white one (that is already dissasembled) I plan to build a 2nd battery at least, choosing the best 6 cells on the 12.

Apparently you can see the bad ones because they loose they rectangular shape. Even you can recover some of them by pinch them taking the TOXIC GAS (always do that on a ventilated or open room) with a wooden or plastic needle. If you try that with a metalic needle you can short-circuit and/or make them explote, so don´t sue me if your mac explotes!

I am interested in the method to revive cells that mentioned @LightBulbFun on https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/macbook-battery-woes.2144415/#post-26596974

I read up on one such method for reviving Clamshell batteries using a 9 volt battery to jump start moribund ones. It is very risky as Li-Ion batteries can blow and there is no guarantee that it will work. The page no longer exists but it basically meant opening the Clamshell battery just enough to expose the contacts of the cells within and applying a 9 volt battery to the start and finish of the chain for no longer than 15 seconds, then putting the battery back into the Clamshell to charge.
