C2D Blackbook here with the whine as well. It is definitely related to the AC power going into the unit (silent on battery). Because of the pitch, it won't be heard by everyone.

The fact that it doesn't whine whilst on battery leads me to believe that it has nothing to do with the actual processor(s), but the inverter on the planar board (motherboard).

I really can't see how or why Apple even remotely thinks this is acceptable.

Also, while the Photobooth trick works for me as well, what I do find after waking from sleep is that the computer operates approx 6-9 degrees C hotter than before. That means the fans kick in (around 64/65 C) quite strong, thus producing an even more annoying noise.

Six of one, half dozen of the other.

As I wrote above I have the whine as well. I ran the CPU-Z and it found that I have the rev03 mainboard as well. Looking forward to hearing if switching the board works.

By the way the temporary fix posted by Drm really works. A nice temporary solution but I still think that Apple should come up with a long term solution.

Hey.. yes i switche d the motherboard --i's the bloody same REV 03 Numer
AND ..it still whines ..i can't believe it and getting dissapointed. leaving this
as it is would be giving up for me. So i go there (local shop) again and since
any new motherboard would not change anything (sorry maybe i'm wrong)
i will see my money back. this is unaceptable for me. before that i talk to
apple ..they should send them a fax with the procedere ..i want to quit this
..sorry, no good news ..maybe REV04/05 what ever will solve it. this sucks
big time ..sorry

I currently have a HP dv2000t with a C2D and it has the wine as well. I'm waiting until macworld to see if they release a 12in macbook pro, otherwise I'll probably end up getting a macbook. I really hope that whichever mac I get comes without the whine.

My new C2D black macbook makes no noise like this. Just so people know the whine is not a property of all C2D macbooks when they talk to a "genius" (or phone support).
I've got to say too that I've had my new Core Duo 2 Macbook (a 1.83 one) for a few days now and it runs completely silently – be it on AC power or battery. No complaints so far, fingers crossed.

The Lenovo T60 ThinkPads and Dell Dimension D620s (both Core Duos) we have at work all have faint processor whines too. Task the CPU and it goes away. Idle the CPU and it comes backs. You have to put your head almost on the keyboard to hear it, but it's definitely there.

I got the computer back from the repair center today (after three weeks). The technician claims he couldn't reproduce the whine, even though I showed it to him personally and he seemed to understand. I have no faith in Apple whatsoever now.

I'm thinking I can't force them to take it back after so many weeks, but I'm going to call Apple Store tomorrow.
