Give it a go - the more that get returned the more likely Apple may get on with improving things!
This is assuming that the problem hasn't been addressed already internally. For that matter, the fact that there's excess thermal compound surrounding the area doesn't mean there's a problem with the application. As long as the film's thickness is within proper limits, the amount that gets "squeezed out" doesn't mean anything.

Yes, they're using more than necessary, but no, that doesn't immediately mean there's a problem with all MBPs. In mass production, something like this is intentionally overapplied to be sure it covers the entire area. They can't spend three minutes carefully spreading and cleaning like a hobbyist who builds one computer a year. That said, the amount by which they've gone over is absurd.

matticus008 - my response to Nar1117 was based on the statement that his MBP gets too hot. Whatever the cause, he should get it back to Apple for a check out. The symptom in question is heat - thermal compound application, cooling system design, who knows - but it is Apple's responsibility to sort it out.

I agree with you on that--except that who knows what the standard for "too hot" is for the customer. There might be disagreement and Apple might not replace the unit if it falls into whatever they consider acceptable ranges. So in other words, his question ("will they replace/refund it?") can't be answered.

My comment was directed to the "maybe they'll do something about it if enough people bring them back" part. I'm saying it's probably already dealt with internally.
