Thanks. I'm going to mess around with this tomorrow.

One question - Can I just back up my Apps folder? Or do I need to back up anything?

I don't really have any new files on my computer, just some new Apps. I purchased Office from Online so I just want to make sure it works when I do the clean install.

I did a full backup through TimeMachine to an external hard drive just in case something went wrong, just because I'm OCD like that. Plus I am a student and have a lot of important files on my mac. Then used a USB as the boot drive, like the article explains.

p.s. I didn't restore from a backup though. I manually added the files I needed back onto my mac because I had 90+ GB of "other" taking up space. By not restoring from a backup, you prevent yourself from putting unneeded "junk"/old files right back onto your drive. Just cleans things up a bit.

Not a necessary step, but it made a huge difference for me.

When manually adding the files, did you just select the Apps from your Time Machine Backup (like Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and drag them into the Apps folder on the computer?

Those are the only files I have that are important (since I haven't loaded anything else on yet) and I want to make sure I don't need to drag anything else over.

For files (music, pictures, etc.), yes. Software, no. I just re-downloaded the apps I needed from their respective websites.
