I am having pinch to zoom issues on my 14-inch, M1 Pro (10 / 16 + 32GB) on Monterey 12.0.1.
Sometimes it works. Sometimes not. Sometimes it is just choppy. Driving. Me. Crazy.

I seriously hope this is a software issue — on this otherwise wonderful machine.

I came here to start a thread but was surprised there was one already.

For context, I dont use any gestures or swipes function on my trackpad. However, I have the issue where the left trackpad button stop working occasionally. When I try to drag a file or double click to open, it just wouldnt respond. All that registers was a light left button click to rename the file which isnt what I was trying to do.

The extremely strange thing is that this ONLY happens within one specific folder. E.g. It was specific to my google drive desktop folders last week and the download folders today. The problem doesnt seem to plague other parts of my laptop. Sadly apple online tech seems clueless as he sent me a SMC reset guide which clearly states up top "FOR INTEL MACBOOKS" Guess I should be doing a more extensive test after reading this thread.

Another +1 here on a 14" MBP—any taps immediately after holding down a modifier key are ignored. Full clicks seem to be okay.

I think there's something buggy with the trackpad configuration on Monterey…my trackpad prefs had “Swipe between pages” unticked but was still working w/ three finger swipes, then all of a sudden they stopped working and I had to go turn it on.

Ugh, that sounds bad!

Anyone else updated to 12.1 who can report?

Same thing for me, 12.1 didn't help out. Still reproducable, no changes at all in trackpad behavior.

Besides CMD + Tap in browser, ALT + Tap also is annoying when need to have advanced menu.

Same here. Quick successive taps don’t register. In Craft app, even normal clicks don’t register intermittently.

+1 — still an issue for me on macOS Monterey 12.1 on the 14" MacBook Pro. It's pretty frustrating because using modifier keys while clicking is such a common task. For example, it's used to perform any of these common actions:
  • Highlight text (click + shift + click)
  • Open tabs in new windows (command + click)
  • Make multiple selections (command + click for each thing)
  • Open menus with hidden items showing (option + click)
  • Trigger UI with secondary behavior, like the green dot window button being zoom instead of full screen (option + click)
  • Using design or photo editing apps like Figma or Photoshop…
    • Drag-copy items on a canvas (option + click and drag)
    • Resize items on a canvas while constraining proportion (shift + click and drag)
    • Select an item inside of a group on a canvas (command + click)
    • Select a new source for a stamp-type tool (option + click)
Hopefully this gets addressed before the end of the year.

I am having the EXACT SAME ISSUE! I went to Apple and did a full erase reinstall of Monterey on my 14" mid level model. Sometimes it works and a majority of the time it takes EXACTLY 3 TAPS when doing shift/opt/tap to select multiple items. Reinstall did NOT fix this so I thought it was hardware issue. I also replicated this on a 14" retail display model but the 16" seemed absolutely fine. I'm still in my return window so not sure if I should hang on for software fix, or if it's a hardware issue. Thoughts?

Since my last post, this is become much WORSE! I have tried for at least 5 minutes or more to move a simple folder to another location and the trackpad just will not work. I'm about to return this machine - it's insane that a $2,500 machine would have this pathetic problem.

the same issue since the beginning. What about the rest: Is it fixed at your devices?

Not fixed on mine. If there are no changes with 12.2 release I would assume it might be a hardware issue with the earlier builds of Macbooks and I'll be taking my machine for a warranty repair.

Same for me, brand new 16" MBP M1 Pro Max, including with 12.2 beta.

I'm starting to wonder if some of the scroll stutter issues might really be (or partially be) trackpad issues as well.

14" MBPro, 12.1, but using it closed, with Magic Trackpad (latest version with the higher corner radii). Constantly losing pinch-to-zoom functionality. Turning the Magic Trackpad off, then back on, restores it. It's driving me nuts.

Same issue here since day one with a 14" MBP. It take 3 to 4 clicks just to get a picture to open, this is getting very tiring almost to the point that I ask myself: "do I really need to open that picture."

I noticed this right away, but realized it's the just very edge of my left thumb touching the trackpad while trying to tap to click. The trackpad is wider now reaching further below the command key.
