Just to be clear, the poster above means discrete GPU, not external.

He’s saying don’t get the one with AMD m370x + Intel Iris Pro inside.

I agree about eGPU also.

I’m using one at my 4K monitor docking setup and it’s great.

Mega thanks to eGPU.io community for enabling this functionality in Mojave still, as Apple naturally disabled the ability for TB1/2 Macs to use eGPU, even though it works great.

Yes it’s not the full bandwidth that you’d get with TB3, but it’s far from “useless” - quite the opposite.

Of course, Apple didn’t do anything like this to drive sales to newer TB3 Macs vs continuing to use older ones.

They would never do something like that.
Never.
I promise.

Pinky swear

Using an eGPU with my ‘new’ MBP 2015 (no dGPU) is something I will want to do in the near future. I know there is information here about the setting up and terminal script needed to run with MBP 2015 thunderbolt 2, but would like to know about what advice/enclosure/graphics-card you have and/or can recommend. Thanks!
[doublepost=1552532290][/doublepost]I’ve been looking and thinking about a MBP 2015 for it seemed a long while (since last summer). There have been so many elements that have come into play with this decision that it feels more complicated than it should have been. Of course there is the whole 2016-2019 ‘things(issues),’ and negated the usual thought of just getting the latest as it should be ‘the best.’ And, yes, they are more powerful and have an attractive design. But I’m not the first (of course, see above) to find it odd that even up till late this last year, new, and even now, refurbished, APPLE still is offering the years old 2015, and the prices are not cheap. What is APPLE saying here?

For me, is the MBP 2015 15” ‘still worth it,?’ yes. I picked up one that was made just this last year, and although it was used, looks and came to me in basically ‘new’ condition. The cost savings alone made it ‘worth it.’ But more than that, it looks great (amazing a computer with a form factor of going on 10 years can still look relivent and up to date for the most part), keyboard is just a joy to use (puts a smile on my face), display gorgeous, and although it only came with the iGPU (2.8GHz processor) it runs smooth, quiet, cool, and speedy (at least it’s not slowed me down). These are still a great computer, and yes, time marches on, but sometimes maybe there is a pause and we can catch our breath and just ‘enjoy the view.’

What I guess I’m saying is, my long decision, could have been shorter. I did my research, and learned a lot which is good, and in the end feel I made the right personal choice. Long time MacOS user here, still great design, great price (used), and that’s the way it goes, happy with an ‘old’ - and still amazingly good - 2015.

I bought a used 2015 15 inch MB Pro yesterday in mint condition, battery capacity still at 89%, 110 cycles. It’s a 2.5Ghz quad-core i7, with 16Gb of RAM and a 512gb SSD, and it has dedicated Radeon graphics, in addition to the Iris pro chip. Payed 1200€ for it. Even got a thunderbolt-to-ethernet adapter with it. Very happy.
It’s plenty fast…

I'm scouting a 2.8/512 GB but no discrete graphics for $850. Was thinking of offering $800. If it had discrete graphics, it would go in a second. There's also a 2.8/AMD/1TB for sale for $1,250 but it's a two-hour drive. If I got these cheap enough, I could sell them to you guys.

Is that one for $850 in great condition?
That is a fantastic price if you ask me...

Pop a new 3rd party NVMe in there with a Sintech adapter and enjoy pure bliss for around $1k

What I've found is that people selling them in economically depressed areas usually ask for less. The city where this is has a median household income of $40,000. We used to have an apartment there for the kids when they went to college. There are four pictures of it on Craigslist and it looks like it is in good shape. There's an ad for a 2.5/512/No Discrete in my local area for $1,500. So prices can be all over the place. There's a nice 2015/1TB/AMD in good shape for $1,300 but it's in NYC and I'm not going to drive five hours for a laptop.
