I'm really tempted to order a 16" MBP but knowing that Intel has realised their 10th gen h series cpu's could the 16" get an update in the next few weeks? I'm looking at getting the 2.4ghz 8 core but would there be a performance increase over the 9th gen 2.4ghz? And has AMD got any new graphics chips out or would the MBP stick with the 5300 and the 5500m?

I’m in the same boat, waiting for upgraded chipset mini led screen and at least 90hz or 120hz screen refresh rate.

Wouldn’t hold my breath for a spec bump refresh anytime soon, if nothing gets released at wwdc, it’ll most likely get released end of the year, or early next year.

I am curious as well. Last weekend had several sites with $500 of the 16" MBP. Sometimes an indicator of newness to come. We will see.

Yeah more often than not when mbp's get discounted on more than a few sites it sometimes means updates are on the way. If nothing happens by WWDC I might just order the current 16".

I could either buy the base 16 inch MBP at Costco for $2099, sale ends 6/14, or wait until Apple's Back to School promo to buy the base for $2199 with hopefully some free headphones or airpods. If I wait for the back to school promo hopefully there is a spec bump to 10th gen.

I could also buy the laptop at Costco and return it within 90 days if the 16inchMBP is updated but I don't feel like abusing that return policy.

They just did a portable release less than a month ago. That would be not only uncharacteristically anti-climactic but a waste of an event or at least part of an event to separate similar portable releases by less than 60 days. I just don’t see it. The fact that nothing came when the 13 inch came out should clue you in that it will be a longer cycle. In fact the smart money is to buy your computer right now or whenever you are exactly 14 days out from the next event where it might come out so that you are within the return window should a new unit surface

MBPs get random discounts on sites all the time, i don't think it's really that much of an indicator. Same as when shipping times get long sometimes. Every now and then a new release does coincide with those things happening, but discounts and long ship times happen at random all the time. If the usual go to leakers/analysts like Kuo or Gurman or Prosser who all have pretty spot on track records say a MBP is coming though, then a MBP is coming. And before the new 13" came out, the only MBPs they've really been talking about is ARM MBPs that initially were slated for 2020 Q4 but have supposedly slid back to early 2021. Not much mention of 16" MBP with 10th gen Intel chip, but i'd imagine it's easier for those simple spec bump ones to get by undetected. 10th gen Intel 16" MBP may come end of 2020 or they may skip that one altogether. That'd be my bet as to what will happen. It's not impossible, as it's happened before, but generally i wouldn't expect Apple to release a new 16" MBP 6 months after the last one.

Why not buy at Costco (with additional year of warranty and generous return policy) + get AirPods from Costco and come out essentially even compared to Apple.com?

I would wait for 11th gen CPU which is 10nm later this year.
Source?

AFAIK 45 watt and higher so called "11th gen" chips including desktop chips from Intel are still going to be 14nm. Only lower power chips are getting the 10nm treatment for now.

For the OP the fake "10th gen" in the MBP 16 is just a spec bump. Wifi6 maybe the only real upgrade for this year.

I assume that with 10th gen you mean i9-10980HK and friends? They are still based on same on four year Skylake and offer only a minor clock bump. Also, no new graphics chips. I doubt we wil see any exiting updates to the 16” this year.

There are some updates they can do to the 16” this year

There are some updates they could do for a minor refresh to the 16”:
  • Intel 10th Gen
  • Faster RAM
  • Wifi 6
  • Upgraded webcam
  • Higher refresh screen
All minor updates but as a whole it could equal a 2020 update and then do the 2021 with USB 4/TB4 and new LED screens.

Yes, the i9-10980HK and so on. The base clock speeds are the same with only slightly faster boost clocks, I don't think we'll see much improvement if any. In fact i saw a video where they compered the 9th gen to the 10 gen on windows laptops and for the most part the 9th gen is just as fast, sometimes faster.

That is true. 10mm is reserved for the ultra portable cpu's while the high-end performance 10th gen Intel CPU's are still on 14mm.

If Apple will update the 16" MacBook Pro this year, it will definitely still be 14mm. Unless Apple finally has the guts to switch to 7mm AMD CPU's

I agree if they did update the 16" the 2 first points will be included. WIFI 6 is possible but that means having to upgrade my network and the last 2 i highly dought it. I would love the mini-led but they'll be a bigger price to pay plus timing wise keeps getting pushed back due to the current situation.

Tiger Lake is 11th gen 10nm.

Not mini LED, just a faster refresh screen of say 120

So in other words next year for Apple. Ice Lake came out last year for low power chips and Apple just released the 10nm MBA/MBP many months later. The low power chips for tiger lake will be first at the end of the year, the higher powered chips are later. So unless the OP is willing to wait another year...

I guess Intel is doing some weird segmentation with the desktop chips going to be 14nm for the 11th gen. High powered mobile 10th gen is still 14nm until next year with the 11th finally going 10nm.

That's totally random. MacBook Pro series from 2019 got an update within a month after Intel released the 9th gen CPU. Tiger lake is expected to announce in 2020.

Maybe Apple is waiting for that as well, or as many people hope - using the AMD processors which are on 7nm technology

But if Apple decides to move from Intel to ARM, then AMD won't be the choice. Remember, it took only 1 year for the transition from PowerPC to Intel.

I doubt it. From past experience Apple tend to only update products when there's a new technology which changes the design or how it's used. The seem to frequently ignore the annual Intel CPU/GPU updates.

I suspect the Macbook Pro 13" was only changed because of the butterfly keyboard issues and I suspect had it not been for that they might not have bothered! Same with the recent Macbook Air refresh.
