it is definitely not resolved, just happened again while reading some text in safari.

edit : i do not have flash installed.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012)

I know this is thought to only affect "newer" Macs, but my 2009 MBP is still plagued by this issue, if anything 10.11.5 has made it worse. Everything I run is up to date, I had it happen 3 times within 2 hours the week before last then nothing since, just waiting for the next hit... probably during a conference call! Each time I'm running the same 7 apps (Safari, Mail, Word, Excel, BusyCal, Skype, Bitdefender) that I use every day for work. As said in my previous post I've even replaced my HDD, just in case it was failing... which it clearly wasn't.

Still affects every Mac I use with El Cap 10.11.5: 2011 MacBook Air, 2014 15" MacBook Pro, 2013 Mac Pro (D500), 2011 iMac. Whatever "SpotlightNetHelp" is, it seems to either be the culprit or related to the culprit, because it shows up in the console multiple times every time I get the beach ball. Specifically:

7/3/16 6:26:32.000 PM kernel[0]: Sandbox: SpotlightNetHelp(389) deny(1) file-read-data /

MBP 13", 2015.
The same problem did start after update 10.11.4. all tests in tech services showed the hardware is OK. Update to 10.11.6 doesn't resolve this problem. I replaced the accumulator, refreshed the thermal paste for the CPU cooler.

All empirical investigations show the problem with overheat. The system uses a bad algorithm for fan managing.
Mac freezes on overheat and I can use MBP only with installed Macs Fan Controls.

The "Macs Fan Controls" is not a silver bullet too, because the system needs time for
restoring and running all applications and when the turn to run the "Macs Fan Controls" a temperature can be 105 C / 220 F.
Now I use such rules, I close the applications with long start time before shut down and I turn on MBP only after cooling. The first login to the system should be fast because high probability overheat on waiting, after running "Macs Fan Controls" the login after sleep will work well.

I use settings: Sensor-based on CPU Core 1, with temperature range 78 C - 94 C

I'm using 10.11.6 and the Finder still freezes on me. I have a 15" Macbook Pro 2015. Any ideas????
Did you try to monitor the temperature for checking, is it correlated with problems? can use the "smcFanControl" or "Mac Fan Controls".

In the service center after MBP testing was found the problem with the accumulator (it was inflated), and the specialists have summarized the problem as a problem with an accumulator, and after replacing it the finder works more stable but overheat I can fix only using third party apps. I guess that the causing of the battery failure was overheating.

MBP Early 2011 15".

Hi everyone.

I just format my MBP 2 times and i still have random freeze.
My MBP is freezing when I open it without shutdown it (on login screen I was not able to enter my password), when I'm just talking on skype etc ... RANDOM.
Safari is not running when my MBP is freezing because i don't use it...

Someone already has had the same problems ?

Thanks.

I thought possibly this issue was resolved with the 10.11.5 update. No freezes for over 5 weeks. Until today. freeze again in Safari on my MBP mid-2012.

No freezing for me whatsoever! Running both MBPr 2014 and 2015

---> Only Yosemite was crap before 'Metal' update...

Same here! Same model, only that i have 10.11.6 installed. As things stand it is the 3rd time the freezing occurred while browsing in safari under the said os x version.

Hello, for more than a month now, ever since I updated to the final 10.11.4 my macbook completely freezes in Safari and other apps at random times, about once a week.
It usually happens when I click on a link, switch tabs, go back one page, etc. The cursor freezes, the screen freezes, the keyboard...it becomes absolutely unresponsive, even the trackpad loses it's force touch and you can't feel the feedback vibration, the only thing that is still responsive is the caps lock light.
I don't have any extensions installed in Safari, and flash is disabled.

Update: Looks like this is not an isolated case, it's a system framework or an Intel Graphics driver bug, a lot of people report 10.11.4 freezing especially people with rMBP 13'' 2015.

Please take a moment and report this to http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html and include this thread link so they can see this.

Update 2:
Safari Technology Preview Version 1 also freezes, no further tests in the subsequent betas made.
OS X 10.11.5 beta 1 and beta 2 also freezes.
I just had a freeze in Chrome, plus in Photoshop (Safari was running in the background), therefore I'm joining everyone else who has "The freeze" in other apps.

Update 3 (May 14):
It has come to my attention that the issue was finally published on macrumors front page and since then we added 4 pages to this thread in less than 24 hours. Dozens of people report all sorts of glitches and beachballs and freezes" spanning from El Capitan to the past summer to "since 2012".

While I understand everyone's struggle with a freezing computer, in the two months of tests and conclusions we are sure this particular issue is affecting only 10.11.4 and mostly the new machines.
It is very common to say "my computer is freezing" and every person can mean something different so
if you are trying to find out if you are affected by this particular issue here are a couple checks:

1. The freeze occurs absolutely random, and when it happens it completely freezes everything, there's no moving cursor*, there's no movement on the screen, there's no beachball, the trackpad on the new rMBP doesn't "click" anymore, if you try to close the lid it never goes to sleep and it never creates a crash report, it never recovers until you restart it manually, please see the video bellow for a demonstration.
2. The issue is only affecting 10.11.4, if you had it earlier, it's not the issue discussed in this thread.
3. Using Chrome/Firefox/Opera does not fix the issue, if it does, you weren't affected by this specific issue.
4. If you have an older macbook you are most likely not affected by this issue(the insanely lag caused by the hard drive cable failure in the macbook pro 2012 comes to mind or the gpu 2011-2013 macbook failure).
5. Reinstalling the OS doesn't help.
6. Disabling flash doesn't help, stop blaming it.
7. Setting the fan to run at maximum is not a smart idea or something you should do to a new macbook, it won't help the freezing issue discussed here, this is not a thermal problem.
8. Disabling hardware acceleration in Firefox/Chrome or WebGL in Safari doesn't help, this is not a browser only freeze, it happens in other apps too.

Update 4:
The issue has been fixed in 10.11.5, install the update now.
Keep in mind this thread was created and tested mostly on 13'' retina Macbook Pro 2015.
10.11.5 fixed it for this model.

[doublepost=1473362198][/doublepost]I don't know about 10.11.5 but, it's still a problem in 10.11.6.

Is there a solution?

Are you all sure this issue is truly fixed ? I am experiencing very similar behaviors with a Mac Book Pro 15" end 2011 avec Mac OS El Capitan version 10.11.6 !

No, its not fixed, its not even fixed in macOS Sierra (although Sierra freezes only a fraction of what 10.11.4 did, still annoying though)

NOT FIXED at all.

MBP early 2015, OS X 10.11.6. If anything it's gotten even worse for me in the last couple of weeks. Happens several times a day. Very upsetting. I need the machine for work and it's interfering with that quite seriously at the moment.

Hi guys. Updated to 10.11.5 and 10.11.6 subsequently but macbook is still hanging.

I would like to downgrade to 10.11.3... can i do it by doing this:
1. Install OS X Yosemite (my friend have a copy)
2. Update to El Capitan 10.11.3 using Combo update.

Is it possible?
Thanks!

I found out that my macbook pro (2011) was overheating and that caused the freezes in my case in el cap. However, I didn't have any overheating problems with yosemite. My wife had the same problem with her mid 2009 macbook pro.

I get regular freezes on my MBP mid 2009, up to 3 a day, as previously reported. I'd hoped my Mac would get the new OS but sadly not, because I'm convinced the issue is purely El Capitan based and nothing to do with other apps. I even left it on the other night with nothing running other than the usual expected Time Machine backups and it had frozen by the morning. The freeze on my model is caused by a spike in CPU temp 100+ normally due to kernel activity. The logs are inconclusive, but the repeated cooking of the CPU will inevitably take it's toll on the hardware. The alarming thing is that whilst the fans always work hard after a forced power down and reboot they do not always kick in as the temp is spiking. I can't decide whether to downgrade to Yosemite, which ran well, or retire my irreplaceable 17" with a new 15" MBP... Of course the cynic in me says Apple will never fix the issue, I'd go as far as saying they will actively ignore people like me submitting bugs because they want the new sales... shame they don't do a 17" then it would be a no brainer!

rMBP 15" with 750M 2Gb (late 2013) WindowServer crashed with macOS Sierra like it did with El Captain 11.3 and .4. So the issue is back. First total lock-up, then beachball and all apps are slooow to response to anything. Rebooting takes some 5 minutes just because closing apps takes a lot of times.

Not even fixed in macOS. Seems to be somewhat more stable, I just had the first freeze in about 3 days.

I have a problem with my MBP Retina mid 2015 too.
The display just turn black randomly but the audio is still on.
But I have never encounter this problem every time I connect it to my external monitor.
I have also installed macOS Sierra but it didn't not help nor installing a fresh 10.11.16 el capitan.

Anyone here has the same problem with me?

Been having this exact mouse/keyboard/system lock-up issue daily for the past week with my MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015) running macOS Sierra.

I've only had this Mac for about a month, and installed Sierra shortly after it was released. My own anecdotal evidence seems to suggest that it seems to occur during playback of a HTML5 video in Safari (even with WebGL disabled).

So this is not fixed under Sierra.
