I recently decided to make the upgrade from my dad's old 800 mhz TiBook to a newer, like the title says, refurb macbook pro 2ghz core duo. I went with the CD as opposed to C2D for price reasons as I needed a pro because I am a design student and just feel I would go nuts with the smaller screen of the macbook, not to mention since upgrading to this from my ibook, I have fallen in love with the silveryness and "hehe i have a powerbook/pro" thing. (although if i could work with a smaller screen i'd be all about the cute spiffy MB)

Now... I know one of the things I am immediately going to do is put another Gig of ram in to bring it up to 1.5 Gig, but other than that I'm pretty much set with programs (my dad got a 17inch pro a bit ago so he's set) and everything else, I was really just wondering...

Should I be excited?

I know that's a horribly stupid question perhaps, but after reading these forums and others all i keep reading is absolute horror stories about displays and casing and running slow and 200000000 things going wrong. I know people post in forums to complain and to get advice for help, so what I'd love to hear is... any happy go lucky GOOD stories about people and their MBP CDs?

Please someone smoosh my fears and anxiety while I wait for my computer to arrive :)

Yes, you SHOULD be excited! You're going to get a beast of a machine, and you will no doubt be very happy! People only post things about their MBP's on here if there's problems with 'em, they don't post "My MacBook Pro works just as I thought it should! Hooray!". So don't worry, be happy, and enjoy your MBP.

Bookshop!
my parents have a MBP, and i've used it a lot.

gripes - i prefer the glossy screen of my MacBook, and I find the MBP screen a little weird.
-it runs hot (i'll fix that eventually)
-the screen is slightly warped

loves
-fricken fast! CPU speed, HDD speed, etc. blows me away.
-thinner than anything i've seen before (which explains the heat)
-it is GORGEOUS! I would be very proud to be seen with a MBP, whereas i'm not ashamed of my MacBook, but it's kinda... meh...

Try the MacBook out first, as the display is much bigger (higher res) than your iBook, thus it is a lot sharper and a lot brighter. :)

Sorry I didn't make myself clear. I HAD an ibook for 2 years and then my dad gave me his Tibook when he got a 17 inch g4 powerbook (he now has a 17 inch macbook pro) and I have been using that since, hence me sticking the the powerbook/pro line and the 15 inch screen size.

But I'm glad to hear there are some good things. I was going to go with the glossy screen, but when I tried them out there seemed to be more glare then I would have liked especially in the school's studios the way the light comes in.

Thanks for the uplifting though :-D

One thing to keep in mind with regards to forums like this is that those who run into problems are going to be a lot more vocal than those who don't. So, don't correlate the noise level of posts reporting problems directly to quality level of the MacBook Pro.

I really like mine as well...even though I'm in the process of having the fans replaced (they must have gotten a bad batch). I wouldn't pay attention to the problems I have though...anything I touch breaks...I'm cursed...haha.

Should I be excited?

Absolutely. It's important to keep in mind that it's easy to get a skewed view of the real world if you hang out in these forums too often. ;) Fact is, the vast majority of users don't have any hardware issues.

Don't worry. The odds are overwhelming in your favor that your machine will work the way it should.

I haven't had any problems with my MBP. In fact, last night I was encoding 20 avi videos to mpeg4 while playing WOW. No problems! I'm considering replacing my desktop to a mac pro now.

Goody! I'm so glad to hear happy nice stories about computers. There really should be a rave section in these forums. For people who love apple so much there is a lot of complaining.... we might all benefit from some "venting" about good things :) Try to be P O S I T I V E:) :) :) :) :) :D

First post - Macrumors newbie!

I thought I'd make my first post a positive one. I sold my 17" G4 Powerbook in November & bought a new 17" MBP. I love it. Performance improvements when using Final Cut Pro over the G4 is amazing. No issues yet. (I do get sick of all the Apple bashing that goes on here).

I was a PC user until 20 months ago (only ever had 1 pc in the house) now I have 3 macs, miglia TVMax & am looking forward to getting a mac mini as my home entertainment system. (A little OT but hey I'm new & excited).

Go :apple: Wahoo!!!

I've got a 15" and 17" CD MBPs in teh house. Had the 15" in to Applecare for some fan replacements, but it wasn't really a necessary thing. The 17" is a new one for me, acquired NIB on a deal. Love 'em both! C2Ds are nice, btu for the price you can get the CDs it's worth if to dive in!

I have had my Macbook Pro now for around a month, all in all I am extremely happy with it.

Pro's

Extremely responsive
Loving having front row for the 1st time
Quiet (no whine)
Plug and play out of the box
Bootcamp runs games and enables you to watch all video codecs. Ultimate in compatibility.
Love the large screen

Con's

The case smudges and scratches really easily so be careful if you want to keep it immaculate
Non native applications for creative suite and final cut pro (not quite as fast as I would have liked)
Mouse & trackpad scroll speeds (not as fast as when running XP)
The hinge of the lid on mine could be stiffer, same with as another guy on my course who owns the identical spec as mine.

17" C2D MBP 2.33 GHz - 2GB RAM - Matte

Looks like a lot of con's but they are all pretty minor observations that I have made about my mac. I would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for a great laptop.

Hope you all enjoy your MBP's! :)

Hey,, I have the same MBP with same specs, but I'd like to counter some of your cons.

I find the metal to be surprisingly resilient. I'm not tough with my things, but I'm not overly careful either and my MBP has 0 scratches. Can't say the same for smudges though, but they aren't all that noticeable on the grey of the metal.

And also, I find the trackpads on Macs to be infinitely better than other laptop trackpads. It's huge, responsive and sensitive. You're right that it's not as fast though.

to keep my legs from melting..MBP runs alittle over room temp...

I've had my Core Duo MBP for 7 months now, and everything has worked flawlessly (knock on wood). My sister also has an identical model, and it too hasn't had any problems. I think there's a very good chance that you will have a wonderful machine. There are many people who haven't had problems, but those are the ones you don't hear about:)

Bought my 15'' MBP Core Duo 2.16 ghz/2 gb/160 gb in November, after upgrading from a Macbook 2 months before that, and a 15'' 1.67 ghz Powerbook 2 months before that (thought I'd like the Macbook better, but just couldn't give up the aluminum sexiness factor, hence I had to upgrade again!)...I think I'll be stickin' with my MBP for awhile! Love it!

Couple weeks ago came into a bit of an influx of cash and decided to treat myself and replace my G4 1 GHz iBook with a 15" 2.33 GHz 2 Gig RAM Dual Core 2 MBP. Absolutely NO complaints other than I do need to get another battery ( my only regret - the iBook had 2 brand new batteries due to the recent 'exploding' Sony battery exchange).

My stress test is that I can play WoW with most of the features maxed :) And I love the two finger trackpad for quick scrolling, right click access.

Slapped it into a new Brenthaven Metro bag (padded to the max) and I am a very happy camper. The case does smudge but I blame that more on my using it at Starbucks while eating a cinnamon roll as finger food.

No fan problems, no excessive heat as long as I don't set it on something fluffy, no complaints.

I've currently got a 20" CD iMac and a MacBook, but am seriously thinking of replacing them both with a MBP.

I originally got the iMac but after getting a bit of money treated myself to a MacBook and absolutally love it! I hardly ever use the iMac anymore and really wanted it for occasional video editing and gaming etc.

I looked on eBay and I could get £700-£800 for the iMac and £500-£600 for the Macbook so hopefully end up with £1200. There is a refurb C2D MBP £1400 so I am really tempted with that.

Are the MBP good enough for doing occasional editing with iMovie and normal SD footage?

I love my Macbook Pro Core Duo! Not a problem with it yet, and it is indeed a beast of a machine.
