I don't know why people bother responding to these brainless initial posts. It's got nothing to do with Apple; it's like comparing an $500 Dell laptop w/ its desktop processor to a $2500 Dell laptop and saying "sucks to buy a Latitude". Every now and then a clueless individual is going to wander in to this forum and others, and people are going to waste their time pointing out the obvious to them (or arguing with them, again pointlessly).

Some people are just incapable of understanding what goes into a more expensive laptop, be it from Apple, Lenovo, Sony or wherever. It's not worth your time to argue with them.

http://www.mcetech.com/optibay/ Look, dual hard drives in a MacBook or Macbook Pro. You can have up to 400GB (someday soon) in your Mac portable.

I can't really see the point of that either. After all, you can get USB bus-powered drives. I usually keep an additional 120/160Gb bus-powered drive containing some music & stuff in my bag so I can hook it up to any of my laptops without needing to sync the same thing between machines all the time.

I've had one HP laptop recently and it's the NX9420. Hardware-wise it was virtually identical to the then Macbook Pro (CD 2.16, X1600, glossy or matte 17" screen, same res), except it didn't have the camera (which I never use in any case). It's thicker at the back and thinner at the front, and I found that it gave me a much better typing position than the MBP on a desk and I was forever hunting for CD cases, cigarette packets, etc to tilt up the MBP. The keyboard was also hugely superior to the MBP's, an important factor for a transportable desktop. This is also one major nit I can pick with the XPS M1710 I use at the moment - the keyboard has taken a step backwards to the same quality as the Macbook Pro, and its similarly flat profile makes it harder for me to type on.

The increased space inside the lappy and better cooling meant the HP didn't try and set fire to the desk either. All in all, I found the HP to be a better built, better designed (for working) more dependable transportable desktop. And it was notably cheaper than the Macbook Pro even with the 3-year onsite support pack - and I would say it was a better machine altogether for 'Pro' duties. It is definitely possible to get something better on one or more levels than Apple hardware for less.

And to the people who list the backlit keyboard as an advantage... the only practical advantage of it I can see is if you're the sort of Mac nerd who corners people in MUGs to show people how cool your computer is. In it's implementation I certainly find it to be a feature that appeals on a geek level until you actually use it, whereupon it's just immensely annoying.

Oh dear, we're comparing main specs again.

The quality of the motherboard matters more than anything else.

It's all very well having tonnes of horsepower if you can't put it down on the road, as I discovered with my Dell. Fantastically fast CPU, fast hard drives, but overall the machine isn't as fast as the equivalent G5 (single 2.5 GHz) by a huge amount. That's mostly the hardware (it's got the world's worst motherboard, not what you'd expect from an at-the-time top of the range £1500 machine), but I reckon it's also partly down to the OS. And Vista is more CPU consuming than XP!

No more PC stuff for me please, fed up with all the junk that's out there...

Do you just pull all this clueless generalisation out from thin air or does a modicum of research go into it? ;)

Correct me if I am wrong but specs for Vista require 256mb of vram to run aero comfortably. I didnt know you needed a gaming rig to run Vista at full speed, this is ridiculous!!!

it's like saying a Mitsubishi EVO is better than a Toyota Supra....

It may have 286 hp and 289 ft-lbs of torque, but it is still a Mitsubishi.

Sure, they run similar 1/4 mile times, but a Lancer is NOT better than a Supra.

and for those who don't know what I am talking about.... the Apple is better :D

No it's all actually perfectly correct. I would know seeing as the motherboard on my Dell was so pants it can't run two hard drives on the same IDE channel without causing popping and crackling on the sound card.

I used a Cube 247 computer which had exactly the same CPU, almost the same RAM (same amount of RAM), and the same speed hard drive (7200 RPM). The Cube 247 was noticeably faster, and I format my Dell every few months (plus it isn't connected to the net).

Believe me, I do know what I'm talking about with this. I may not know so much of the technical side, but I certainly know what I've said... :)

Hmmm. To me, reading your other posts it comes across rather like someone saying to me that "Reykjavik is the capital of Colombia, I know because I've been to Argentina once. Believe me, I do know what I'm talking about with this." but I'm sure you think you know what you're talking about :)

Maybe not, but they're still pants :p

Well... with one exception they do certainly look pants compared to a Mac. But after all, beauty is only skin deep and only the simple minded are swayed solely by looks alone ;)

And now if you'll excuse me, I can't sit here blabbering on about Dells for ever, I have to go and do some Second Lifeing.

This HP might be faster on paper and so on, but speed alone can not kill a MBP.

I'll keep my MBP.

Now the family has 2 Toshibas, 1 Compaq and 1 HP beside my beloved MBP. I tried convincing my brother to buy an MB instead of a windows machine. I even offered him £400 extra from me, but he still bought the HP. Now I feel sorry for the guy, but still, it was a good offer.

The problem with him is that back in Oman, the low range Core Duo MB costs around £1000+ ($2000). His C2D HP with better components than the MB cost him £600 ($1200). I still wish he got the MB.

On the bright side, I get to laugh at all of them, windows users when I return back to Oman in the summer. :D
