They are not obligated to help you. You didn't buy AppleCare, that is why they sell it, so that your computer will be covered if it breaks beyond the manufacturer's warranty period.

Even if I spend the $1000 it's now going to cost to repair the machine I can likely look at spending another $1000 within 6 months because another logic board is bound to die. The replacement parts are complete garbage and failure is pretty much the only guarantee.

Basically I'm stuck. Can't afford to fix it and can't afford to pay for the constant repairs it's likely to need in the future. Now I need to strip the HD out of my 18 month old $2500 laptop for my data and scrap the rest... wonderful.

You had the option to purchase AppleCare up until the end of your year warranty.

It sucks that you have had a few bad logicboards but that can happen. There are a lot of people who have gotten a logicboard replaced and it worked great.

Applecare is a moot point now since the machine is 17 months old. I know it's hard but you think we could move on and be a little more constructive. After all these issues having people continue to rub the Applecare sandpaper is my face is getting tiresome. This is my first laptop and Apple computer so obviously I didn't know what I was getting into.

hi, i'm having a similar problem with my macbook right now. I'm on my third logic board (its being replaced again now so it makes it 4). The repairs never solved my problem. I'm of the 12months warranty and do not have applecare. I am still on the 90days warranty for the logic board. I was on the phone with apple yesterday and they sceduled for the logic board, display and inverters to be replaced so i bring my mac to my tech.. and he calls me this morning.. telling me this is non sens since the logic board on the macbook costs 1100$.. plus the display plus ... well you understand.. So i have one advantage being that im on the 90days warranty..
Correct me if i'm wrong but you are from bc in canada. Im from quebec and here legal warranty applies for this sort of issue and its pretty easy to open a case if you have your invoices and repair papers.. now since being nice to apple did not work you would want to try the not so nice technique (assuming the same laws apply in bc). Most people don't know this but extended warranties here are nonsenses.. they only obligate the company to respect provincial laws... (get it?? NON SENSE). again,, this may not apply in your country/province/state.
So anyways.. If i were you (this is my next move to if my mac is still broken after this fourth repair) i would let apple know that you are aware of those laws and that you have all the documentation needed to open a court case. this may be worth giving a shot...

Email sjobs@mac.com, exaplain your situation, that your issues started before the warranty expired, and have re-occurred causing a fourth major fault which warrants a consideration of replacement.

Worked for me. MacBook Pro 1.83, due to have it's fourth logic board replacement AFTER spending 2 months in service (main board fault, almost straight out of service). Had been dealing with Apple directly, and they rang up after this, telling me a new MBP was on it's way. Got it one week ago.

The most important thing is that you don't 'warp' the facts or lie in any way. If you tell the truth, remain patient and make sure you are very reasonable, you'll end up like me, happy with a new, reliable MacBook Pro.

Would you guys stop with the Applecare? Who gives a sh*t about it now? And if a notebook requires that many repairs, Apple should do the right thing and replace it. Clearly it's a lemon. No amount of Applecare is going to change that. Selling a customer a faulty product and then turning around and blaming the customer for not buying warranty for it is ludicrous. Blame Apple, not the guy who spent $2500 for a sh*tty machine. Sorry, but some posts on this thread are really too much. :rolleyes:

To the problem at hand, definitely try contacting Apple customer relations (you'll have to ask to speak to them when you phone up Applecare as there's no direct line to them). My experience with them has been great overall, though you have to be polite but FIRM that you want a replacement (they'll suggest all sorts of other things...). If that doesn't work, email Steve Jobs as someone else suggested.

Edit: I just noticed you're already aware of Customer Relations. The other thing, as someone else suggested, is to check your credit card policy if you bought the notebook with one. It should extend coverage of certain repairs for at least another year beyond your first year, which means you may still be covered (though you'll have to pay upfront for repairs and file a claim with the credit card company). It's not bad for a last resort. Good luck!
 
Why didn't you get the extended warranty? It would have been replaced by now.

I don't think you're being very fair to the OP. It's water under the bridge - spilt milk - nothing you can do now. Let's just try and help him, shall we?
 
I never bought extended warranty for one of my macs. As a top of the line product manufacturer Apple should better include extended memory with every system they sell. Anyway, the OP's macbook pro should have been replaced by a new one instead of replacing the logic board for the third time.
 
Still nothing new to report. I have a couple e-mail addresses I'm going to try. Hopefully I'll have some good news by the end of the week.
 
Just got off the phone with Executive Relation at Apple Canada.

They've agreed to cover the cost of the logic board while I pay for the labour. More then fair as far as I'm concerned. ~$200 is a reasonable repair cost for a notebook out of warranty.
