From what I have read around, I understand that MBP 14/16 will not get M2 this year if we follow the M1 pattern. So, my question is what kind of upgrade MBP 14/16 will see this year?

I actually need a MBP 14 but can wait if it is worth it, of upgrades are minor and insignificant, I would rather place the order as there is a 2 month delay from order to delivery.

I welcome any advice and suggestions. Please help me out hehe :)

Are you talking about the 14/16" MBP line or the 13" MBP? The later got an M2 update just now. That said, 14/16" MBPs will likely have their internals updated in either October or March.

Can you wait that long? Depending on your answer, you'll have your answer as to which model to buy.

I have a 14 inch MBP and absolutely love it but at this point I'd wait for the next refresh if you can. You might have to wait until the first quarter of next year though. However, there was a rumor I read where Apple *might* refresh the MBP line at the end of this year. Who knows?

Talking about 14/16 MBP. Apologies that I forgot to make that clear. Thanks for the answer.

Can you wait until March at latest? If so, then wait for the M2 Pro/Max. Otherwise, bite the bullet and get one of the current models.
Will there be any upgrades other than processor? If yes, I might add but if it is only the processor then I will bite the bullet just now.

Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, who is very reliable, says that we won’t get updated 14/16” MBPs this year. Since 2015, MacBook Pros have been released in May at the earliest point in the year and as late as November. Knowing Apple’s typical release schedule now, if Gurman is correct, the earliest a new model will be released is next year’s WWDC in June or at an October event, and that doesn’t mean that they will even ship right away. That means you likely will be waiting another year to year and a half for a new release.

Furthermore, Apple is having pretty significant difficulty just getting the current models delivered to customers, with deliveries being 1-2 months out if ordered from Apple.com and physical stores and third-party resellers having sporadic, unreliable stock.

I waited for the Air announcement and then bought an M1 MBP 10/16/1TB on Friday. Depending on where you order from, you could get it sooner than 2 months. I noticed that my configuration (which I bought from Costco and arrives on Tuesday) was also available to pick up today at an Apple Store in Phoenix.

I'm not super worried about an M2 Pro this year. If it happens, great. I think it will just be CPU bump and not until at *least* spring 2023 if not next fall. But I'm still on a 2013 and 2015 MBP (personal / work) and I was way overdue for an upgrade, especially as a developer. I'm hoping the 10/16/1TB will futureproof me for a good 5-7 years or so anyway.

Yeah, future proofing is what I care for. I am on MBP 13 (2017) and the keyboard keeps breaking

I'd wait for next gen. I have a high hope for face ID, OW the obnoxious notch is meaningless.

I have been pondering on the same thing. Because of the extreme delays, my MBP 16 Max will be delivered end of June ( more than 2 months after my order) . This is a massive purchase for me ( and i need all that power and more for 3D work and video compositing), and i would hate to have waited this long for it just to have an M2 version coming out 2 months later.
Since the WWDC M2 announcement, I’ve been thinking of cancelling my order… but I hope Gurman is right..

Both the 14/16” MacBook Pros are expected to have the M2 Pro/M2 Max sometime in 2023. 12-Core CPU/38-Core GPU. 10 Perf cores/2 Efficiency cores

The next time the 14/16 will be upgraded is with the M2-Pro/Max next year.

Same/similar issue here - wait or upgrade..... is it stupid to buy a mbp 14" right now? There's always a better one around the corner, but sometimes that corner is a year away LOL. Bought the 2020 i7 MacBook Pro just before the M1 came out and regretted it ever since. Want to sell it before it's worth nothing anymore and get a 14" M1pro which should last me a good few years.... but buy or wait...don't want to make the same mistake twice!!

I have ordered as from the best I could gather, I believe the next update to MBP will come next year. Can't wait that long for 20% increase in performance. M1 would do fine and 100 times better than my current setup. Went with 10/16, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD.

I would say go ahead with M1 Pro M14, you can't really go wrong with M1 Pro

I think I will! Probably going for base chip, 32gb ram, 1tb ssd (although tempted by 512 as I put everything in iCloud). Late August delivery time tho :(

If the delivery is late august for base why not CTO to your specs? You will save $400 I guess with 512 that you can invest in something else given that you put everything on iCloud...1TB doesn't make much sense as you have 32GB RAM so that will lower down swapping as well.

and yeah, my ETD is 4-18 August :(

sorry, CTO? educate me pls. ;)
hmmm yeah, tempted. Saving some money but concerned not as future proof. What if... what if...I change my mind and go back to storage on device, what if apps get so huge I need more than 512, is it worth saving money now it only saves £$200.... umming and erring for a couple more days I fear.

Apologies for not making it clear. CTO refers to "Configure To Order". If there is a "what if" then you need to weigh in your options. You can always get M2 SSD Enclosure and use at as an external storage. Just a suggestion. If you don't want any of that hassle and don't mind spending $400 now then just go with 1TB

You made the right decision purchasing now - if the M2 Pro/Max was just a month or two away, then I'd have said wait, but we have no idea when it will come yet, so you'd be forever waiting for a performance increase that you may not even notice under normal usage conditions. The M1 Pro/Max are insanely powerful and far exceed most standard users needs already.

These systems are tools. Tools used to get a job done. Purchase the tool you need, and get that job done now!
