I upgraded to the MBA M1 16gb from a 2014 MPB 15 16Gb. The battery was starting to go, it sucked a lot of power and we live full time in a RV while working so power draw was a huge factor. I didn't go MBP because it doesn't seem to be much of an upgrade over the MBA and no touchbar is a plus (even more now that it's going away). I also wanted to smaller power supply for travel. So for us, it was a game changer upgrade but if I lived in a situation where power wasn't so much of a factor, I would have waited for gen 2 of Apple silicon

The battery life is the biggest attraction for me. I use a 2014 MacBook Pro for casual use and it's almost always on the charger when I'm not using it. It's annoying to pick it up to use for a while and then needing to grab my iPad Mini as the battery's very low. My daughter's Air/M1 is really fantastic but I really try not to use devices that aren't my own as I know how annoyed I am when someone uses my devices.

Congrats though - the Air is super thin, super light, fast and the great battery life. I do hope that they get around to doing one really thin bezels so that they can make it 14 inches. One thing that I like about the 2014 15 is the bigger screen. I had a 2015 13 for a few years from work and I could get used to it. It would be interesting if they made a 16 inch Air.

Yep, and it wasn't just battery life, it was literally the watts it pulled from our power when plugged in, 100% charged.. The 2014 MPB was constantly around 50-60 watts, where the M1 is more like ~15.. Since we get our power from batteries/solar, that's a massive difference when working all day long.

The one thing that I like about the 2014 MacBook Pro. Everyone else in the household likes it cold. I use it in the living room in my recliner with a comforter and put the MacBook Pro on my lap and it's nice and warm. Probably comparable to having a cat.

Sorry to bump this but wondering if anyone has had any further insight on this now we're a few more months in?

I've got a 2018 15" MacBook Pro with a 560X. Following the lack of upgrades last night, I'm very tempted by an M1 Pro - processor-wise I'm not remotely concerned about the difference but graphics-wise I am a little bit. I do play a lot of Football Manager...! Is it comparable? Or even better?!

I would say that at the very least it’s better due to the computer running a lot cooler.

I literally have the same machine as you, the 15" MBP with AMD R9.

I had been thinking of upgrading to the 16" since June, and then after knowing the announcement I began to wait patiently for the AS MBP to come out.

And after seeing lots of reviews of the M1, it is a very impressive machine BUT I would need at least 32 GB of RAM for me to last another five years.

My current MBP is still working great and fast for my needs, so I'm going to wait until Apple release the M1X/Z for the 16" AS MBP with at least 32 GB of RAM. it could happen in WWDC next year or in Q3 2021 like the rumor, but I can wait with my current machine.

Hope it helps.
Are you still waiting?
