My dilemma is since the education deal (free nano and printer with purchase of a computer) ends july 17, Merom's obviously wont be out by that time, hence, should I just get it now for the deal or wait for the merom MBP without all the free stuff.. ?

In other words, is it worth the extra free stuff and worth the wait?

get the free stuff now. i just bought a 17" MBP at the beginning of June and it will last me through my last 2 years of college. I've heard it rumored to be able to swap out the CPUs possibly, or you could just sell it off and buy a new one.

Ends July 17th?

As far as I know, at the U.S. Education store the $179 rebate applies to any order between June 5th and September 16th.

Can't really find an equivalent deal here in Australia so I suppose I will keep waiting for Core 2 :)

By the way h0e0h the processor is soldered right onto the mainboard itself, so unless you can find someone who can desolder a 400+ pin processor AND then solder a new one back on, I doubt you will ever be able to upgrade it with a new chip.

I think it is a printer OR a nano. The printer deal ends july 17th, the nano deal ends sept 16 (or close). I went to the store recently and they are not giving both out together. It is one or the other!

Both printers and iPods are available for rebates

 Hmm maybe the store is stingy.

When you click on the free iPod ad for college students on the main store page, it brings you to a page that states the information about the iPod rebate, and if you scroll down there is a button that says "Free Printer, too."

The store (in Manhattan Beach) made it sound like it was one or the other. But for the OP she/he should go for it and buy the computer and get the printer+nano. I look at the store online and you are right, it does say free printer at the bottom.

My friend just bought a MB and filed for rebate on both printer and ipod, which the store told her she could do.

Is it just me. Or is the iPod and PRINTER deal only in the US. Because at the apple.ca site, it only shows free iPod.

The UK store was doing some sort of Printer offer

Buy a Mac and a qualifying printer from the Apple Store or Apple's retail stores and get up to £60 back

Finished a month or so ago, but no iPods yet! Evil.

The UK's evil, we get royally screwed over on everything. That said if they put up an iPod offer on their website for anyone who buys a MBP all will be forgiven (throw in a printer as well, might as well have both!)

The newer chips will also be on another platform (santa rosa) so a swap to the most recent processor wouldn't even be possible in a year.

OP:
You could wait a little longer ;)

Actually no, the Core 2 line will launch later this year with a pin set that is compatible with the current one used by Yonah, so plugging them into existing architectures is as easy as... plugging them in.

Gets tricky on Mac laptops since they are soldered though.

Santa Rosa will be employed next year for newer Core 2 processors that come with a 800Mhz FSB.

I totally agree. There are many threads suggesting an update of the MBP at WWDC. If nothing happens, you still have over a month after WWDC for the iPod rebate, and most likely another free printer deal.

unless you are going to do heavy computing, I would recommend buying now. A 2 ghz core duo is MORE than enough processing power to get you through 4 years of instant messsaging/web browsing/word processing. You can take advantage of BOTH the ipod and printer rebates (I'm 100% sure you can do both). Yes you can wait for Merom, but you arent going to see any benefit with safari/ichat/iwork or whatever you use. I would definitely buy now, except if you use pro apps, in which case wait. trust me, these core duos pack a hard punch:)

That said however, if you game it might actually be a good idea to wait. Same too if this is going to be your sole computer while in college.

Yikes! I didn't realize the deal ended so soon! I already have an iPod (5G) though, and I'm very happy with that, so the iPod deal doesn't bug me too much. Apple really should extend that into September or something though, considering most schools here in the US start up in late August/early September. I'll probably wait until then to get a computer (if I can decide by then).

You're talking about the iPod promo, right? That ends September 16th.
