that's the worst thing I've ever heard in my entire life!

It really is the worst thing I've heard. I would be on the floor crying. "NOOO! I WAITED SO LONG FOR THIS".

Sorry, I'm not making this any easier, am I?

Have you phoned Apple yet? I would raise hell and try get them to send another ASAP ! !

Or you could be one of the first to venture opening the MBP and replace the HD.

That is terrible about the crashed drive!

Im on my 2.0MBP, I posted some tests on the main forum about deliveries. Machine is FAST!! Wireless is better than before, I am showing 4 bars where I usually get 2-3.

And about the clean install, please post how much space the install takes. These machines ship with 25gb of space taken (granted, that is from theoretical space, not actual) I would like to know your HD capacity right after the reinstall.

didnt drop it or anything. DId a clean install of OSX. All was good. isntalled some widgits played with frontrow and photobooth allw as good. Was inthe middle of isntalling XCODE when everything froze. now only get white screen and a clicking nise :(

Aw man, that bites. Hopefully Apple will take care of you quickly on the replacement. Almost makes me feel guilty for enjoying mine -- almost. :)

The clean install used about 15gb's. Thats with the bare essentials + X11 pluse the entire ilife suite... I am soooo soooo distraught.... out of all the odds.... i get the bad hd... worst part is, they keep sending me up the ladder and now i have to talk to apple engineering directly apparently. I'm 99.9% sure its jus a bad hd.. but... yea..................GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR I hope all your macbook pros' break! !!!

That's really bad. See if you can boot up from the OS X disc and repair the HD if it detects it. If you can't do it then demand a new one from Apple ASAP.

Just curious, are the OSX binaries themself universal binaries?

I'd imagine if every app in the computer (like safari.. or garageband.. or iphoto..) takes up twice as much space as usual it gets quite hefty!

I'd install OSX on a external FW drive and send it back only when Apple can send the replacement :p

That's true... On the install disc. On the HDD, it only installs what it needs.

But 15 GB for essentials and iLife? That seems excessive. No wonder I have no storage space on my 100GB PowerBook drive.

programs with universal binaries are not twice as big. maybe a few hundred megabytes.

Just Got Lucky!

I'm a newbie to MacRumors, but have been enjoying the forum for several weeks watching news about the MBP.

On a whim, I went by the Phoenix Apple Store and asked the first salesperson to greet me if they had a MBP on demo or in stock. He said no, but should have a demo any day now and that I could order on the web in store to get priority shipping.

As I shopped in store, I was hanging out by the G4 PBs when another salesperson came by to check on me. I told him I was interested in a MBP. He got real quiet, gave me a funny look and held up 3 fingers.

He then preceded to tell me that he thought he had 2 - 1.83GHz and 1 - 2.0GHz in stock. I told him that I wanted the 2.0. He went to the stock room and came out with a very thin black box. I about lost it!https://forums.macrumors.com/images/smilies/eek.gif

After ringing me up, they congradulated me on the first Arizona Apple Store MBP purchase!

I can't beleive how lucky I got.https://forums.macrumors.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Well, I'm off to charge the battery...

My friend's 2.0 GHz just arrived this morning, but he is pissed because his parents won't let him open it.

Yup--still not letting me open it! ARG--HAVEN'T I WAITED LONG ENOUGH?!

It's worse when the box is sitting next to you--trust me.

ok, so I got my MBP at 10:28am EST and I am loving it!

so far I am very impressed with build quality, speed, and battery life.

straight out of the box the battery had 85% charge and I ran the machine with screen at 75% brightness and also had a firewire HD connected and both hard disks ran for a little over 2 hours downloading my backup and after finished the battery still had 6% left. I let it run completely down and it took 3 hours to charge back. I have now been using it for a couple more hours with screen at around 45% and I have even installed several apps using the CD drive and right now battery is showing 57%.

The browsing experience is so much better on this machine.. I mean, Safari is finally as fast as IE on Windows

Front Row ROCKS! Although it has locked up on me once already when trying to watch a video podcast.

I almost didn't order the Macbook because I use Microsoft Office quite a bit and I didn't want to run the code using Rosetta, but I am here to tell you that it runs about as fast as my 17" 1.5GHz PB G4. Can't wait until the new version comes out for Intel. Also, I am impressed with the speed of PhotoShop.

So to recap: I am very pleased with this upgrade. The screen is so freaking BRIGHT!!! :D

Ahhhhh!!! I'm in Scottsdale for a conference and my MBP got delivered by fedex at HOME this morning. It's now sitting at home waiting for me and it's driving me insane. Maybe I'll buy a second one from the Phoenix store!
