Some people have claimed that there are solutions that fix the charging problem including:

"pmset restoredefaults" - use this command in terminal (may need to precede the command with sudo).

OnyX - third party software, use maintenance / run tasks to verify/rebuild/clean/etc.

Unfortunately, these "fixes" do not solve the problem for many people including me. With OnyX, some people claim that the problem went away for a while but the fix was not permanent. For some, even completely re-installing OsX did not fix the problem (not sure if 12.4 was re-installed rather than downgrading to 12.3).

--

For me, the problem has gotten worse - lately I had to reboot every day or more than once a day. After OnyX, the problem returned within an hour without switching power source. Beforehand, I thought that switching between usb-c charging and magsafe charging was causing the problem - I have many power adapters at home and work (all made by Apple - one 140W, two 67W, and one 20W, which has become less reliable recently. USB-c cables are of third party).

p.s. OnyX did solve one problem for me - my AlDente now launches upon rebooting as intended via preferences. Beforehand, I had to manually launch every time after rebooting because my intended settings did not work.

Interestingly we bought three of the same spec laptops at the exact same time, only one of the three suffers from this issue, and yet all three have the same hardware and OS. I'm beginning to suspect I will need to send the faulty unit off for repairs of some kind.
Maybe I should ask for a replacement 16" laptop (MacBookPro18,1) without this bug.

Updating to say my problem has gone away. No issue recognizing chargers anymore. No idea what changed, just started happening less and less frequently. Then stopped altogether a few weeks back.

Today, I installed macOS Monterey 12.5 beta and finally the problem has been solved!

public beta program link : https://beta.apple.com/sp/betaprogram/

you have to click 'more info' to install 12.5 not 13.0

Has anyone gotten any sort of official word from Apple/Apple representatives about this?

I've gotten to a semi-reproducible point. Whenever I load a package in R while it isn't plugged in, I have to restart to get it to charge. However, this is not the only state that causes this problem - sometimes, it just won't charge without restart for reasons I cannot discern.

This is absolute hell on my productivity

How long have you been running on the beta? With my systems it sometimes takes a few days for the problem to reappear after a reboot. In any case, your message gave me hope so I installed the 12.5 beta also. So far the system is charging correctly after the 12.5 install on the M1 Max.

It has been a day and a harf, and my mbp still works fine :)
I just arrived at the office and connected the power to my laptop, and the charging started right away.

Same problem with my M1 Pro 16”.

Fingers crossed that 12.5 fixes it. If it happens again I’ll go to the Apple Store.

same here. Mine is macbook pro 14" with macOs 12.4. I have to restart to have the power adapter recognized. It happens when I connect it to external monitor with lid closed. And then unplug and replug in the power cable.
Neither MagSafe OR USB c can be recognized.
I just upgraded to 12.5, hopefully the issue will gone.

12.5 since Tuesday and so far so good! No reboot yet and it's been charging fine several times since.

MBP 16" M1 Max.

Funny of Apple to not acknowledge anything but clearly some problem introduced in 12.4 was fixed in 12.5.

For those who are fed up with restarting your mac and are here in search of a solution: I have one.

The solution involves upgrading your macOS version to the experimental macOS Ventura (beta release) in which this issue appears to be fixed. You can sign up your mac for it here. If you're signed in and are struggling to find the download page, here it is. I recommend backing up your hard drive with time machine just to be safe, seeing as it is not a final release and there may be unexpected issues (I have not run into any).

It is a shame that we have to go to such lengths to be able to charge our brand new laptops, but it is what it is. If this answer helped you, like it so that other people experiencing this issue can find it easier.

I just realized I haven't had this issue for a while now and forgot all about it until I read your post. I haven't done anything special with my Mac except keeping it up-to-date (at the time of this writing I'm on v12.6). Haven't removed any existing software nor reinstalled macOS.

I’ve experienced the same issue with my 14-inch MacBook Pro running macOS Monterey v12.4. Restart fixes it, until it happens again. Glad it’s not just me.

My MacBook sporadically loses the ability to use the power adapter. I would be using a power source (via MagSafe3 or usb-c), but the outside power source is not recognized. This has happened now 4 times in the past week. There is a simple fix, which is to simply reboot.
Try turning the USB plug upside down and plug it back in. Some USB cables are not fully wired and don't charge if upside down. I have a 16-inch 2021 MBP and have sporadically had issues with USB charging also.
