Macbook Pro - shuts down for no reason

Hi, I have a late 2014 MacBook Pro retina, and lately it has been shutting it self down for no reason.. sometimes I can be on it for several hours and then it shuts down and sometimes I am on it for 10 minutes and it does the same..
do any of you know what is wrong?
I tried reinstalling the OS but that didn't help at all..

Open console.app. Copy the last 20 lines or so of the console log immediately before the shutdown and post them here.

I can't seem to find the lines before the shutdown.. the latest lines i find are when i boot up the computer..

In Console, search for

BOOT_TIME

That should you the time of the last boot. Then erase the search to remove the filter, go back to the Boot Time, and copy and paste the 20 or so lines before the BOOT_TIME line.

Perhaps the log doesn't go back to your last crash. You may have to wait until it crashes again then check the logs.

Look in this folder and see if there is a crash log from the date/time of the crash.

There are no crash logs from the date or time of the last crash and the console app doesnt go further than when i turn on my computer.. nothing before that

Given that there's nothing for over an hour before the reboot, I'm going to guess that you have a hardware issue of some sort, possibly a bad internal power connection but it could be any number of things.

The reason for that there is nothing for over an hour is because if i turn it back on immediately after it crashes, then it crashes again just seconds after I turn it on...

Yes, but if it comes up and then crashes there still should be stuff in the logs. Nothing in the logs says to me that it's not booting enough to even get that far, and that tends to suggest hardware to me. I suppose it could be a bad kext or some similar corruption but your reinstall would have fixed that.

Yeah did run that. "No issues found". No i don't have AppleCare

Nothing jumps out at me, but you appear to have some BitTorrent malware that you should remove, either by clicking on the Remove link in the report, or by running MalwareBytes.

Went to apple and asked them but they found nothing wrong with the computer and the repairman had it for two days but it never turned off for him..

Please tell me you found out what was happening to your Mac? I have EXACTLY the same issue.

Mid-2014 15" MacBook Pro Retina

Started crashing sometimes once a week, sometimes more often, then it became more often... every 5 minutes.. or.. every 8 hours... Took it to the Genius Bar.. kept it there for 2 days.. they ran a bunch of tests, it didn't crash for them. Hardware test passes. Separate meatiest passes too. I reformatted 3 times.. one even with the write 0's option... same issue.

Here are my logs... I've been able to associate the crash with 3 log lines:
1 - A Google Chrome Update...
2 - A "Service sets EnableTransactions=false and EnablePressuredExit=true, which makes no sense. Enabling Transactions."
3 - _DirtyJetsamMemoryLimit message.

I removed Google Chrome and all related folders, so now I got a Google Update cannot be found message... here are the related log lines right before the crash

The only way I get it to run for 60-90 minutes without crashing, is in safe-mode, and even here it crashes from time to time.

Wish I could tell you that I have a fix (I do not) but I do have a workaround and would like to see if others can confirm. I have the same MBP (mid2014 Retina 2.2GHz 16MB, Intel Iris PRO,no dedicated GPU, 256SSD) I have tried every possible solution. Multiple formats, reinstall OS, tried different version of OS X, resetting SMB etc, etc. I was ready to accept Apple's stock answer (you need a new logic board) Which in itself is infuriating, its a $2000 less than 3yr old laptop...really??

So I decided to do a little experimenting and I installed a fresh install of Windows 10 as a dual boot option and Shazam, Windows 10 will run for days on end with no crashes, so I decided to try Linux (tried multiple distributions, Ubuntu, Debian, Arch, Kali) they all run for days on end no crashes.

So APPLE, telling me I have a bad logic board is just bullshyte. The problem ONLY shows up while running Mac OS.

For several months I just gave up on running MacOS and accepted the fact that I had a $2000 MBP that could only run Windows or Linux but then recently I happened to have my MPB plugged into my TV via HDMI and I needed a file that was stored in MacOS, so I rebooted in OSX (expecting a crash at any sec) but suddenly no crashes after a couple of hours. Then it dawned on me that the only thing different was that I was running an external monitor this time. So I unplug the HDMA cable and within 5 mins the MMP crashed. Rebooted, and it crashed again. Plugged the HDMI cable back in, rebooted, no crashes (I have tested this extensively and never have a crash while the external monitor is plugged in).

What does this tell us?

Many things, but most importantly, Apple has yet another MBP video issue (see 2011 and 2012 issues) but will not admit it this time (looks like it will take another Class action law suit)

I am a Network Engineer, not a software engineer so although I can find the problem I have no fixes. My gut tells me that is might be related to Intel drivers (not the drivers themselves, but more likely how OpenCL, OpenGL is working with the OS) However because Apple will not allows us to uninstall and use different video drives we cannot test that. Why it works fine while driving a second external HDTV leaves me scratching my head. It is almost as though putting an additional load on the GPU keeps things running smoothly (who knows).

Would love to see if some of you can reproduce my results as it gives us something more concrete to go back to Apple with.

I easily fixed the issue by keeping 1 core running 100%. Simply run

yes > /dev/null &

And don't close the terminal (or run it at startup, etc). This 100% solved the issue. Accidentally closing the terminal (making all cores go to 0%) effectively causes the crash. Keeping at least 1 core at 100%, I was able to run 20 days straight with no crashes.

I've heard about the HDMI fix... Just guessing here... maybe connecting the HDMI causes a small process to be run and so it doesn't crash. I never got to test it.

@smorhaim good info, If that works, I will write a shell script with a continuous loop and have it load at startup, that should keep us from having to open a terminal and run the command manually (also not having to worry about accidentally closing the terminal app).

I will reply back and share my script once I test this method.

But this is just a band-aid...

I had bought a new MBP 2017 a couple days before I found the fix.. so now I have a potentially $1200 used laptop that I can't really sell because nobody will buy it with that "condition" and apple won't fix it... It's a 15" Retina 2015 which without the issue could be sold for that or even more.

I wish we find a permanent fix!
