similar problem here but with post WWDC MBA, only with spotlight, with and without the battery, just received the machine today. similar problem to some people, the nearest apple shop is 2.5 hours away :(. I really hope it is only a software issue.

count me in

My new 17 inch MacBook Pro has this issue too, but I've only noticed it when running the 9600 Gfx Card (Higher Performance in Energy Saver). It DOES happen for me in BOTH Mac OS X and Windows though, since I believe Windows XP always uses the 9600 as the graphics card.

Under Mac OS X, I mostly notice it when scrolling in Safari, where you get rippling lines across the page.

On Windows XP, it's blatantly obvious when playing Crysis :(

I'm betting this is a software issue, since absolutely nothing else seems wrong. Well I'm certainly HOPING :p

Just to follow up - I had my MBP checked out by the local Apple service guys, and their conclusion was that it's a software issue. Apparently they booted the machine off a firewire drive running 10.5.6 and the problem went away ... and then returned when they updated that machine to 10.5.7. So I'm holding out hope we'll see a fix for this in 10.5.8 (I seem to remember graphics card drivers being in their initial list of priorities for that update) or perhaps in Snow Leopard ...

I am having the same problem, I installed a beta of snow leopard and it fixed the problem ... so hang in there, lets hope that 10.5.8 fixes this problem as well.

My new MBP 15 received today has the same issue. So waiting for 10.5.8, and SL.

does anybody have this problem with a macbook pro that came with 10.5.6 or older in stock and has updated to 10.5.7??

Ive got the problem too, on a brand new 13" Macbook pro, with 10.5.7. its annoying, but good to know that its a software problem.

Can someone tell me why "reset PRAM" is still considered the cure-all for all things not at all affected by PRAM. It's pretty clear this person either has an OS issue, nVidia driver issue (which would be corrected by Apple) or maybe a font issue. In any case, nothing involving resetting PRAM would fix it.

It's like the people who still refer to the motherboard as a "logic board". It's a motherboard. Apple is using x86 parts -- get with the x86 terminology.

how about for the simple reason why not just try everything just on the off chance that it works. does it really hurt to try. i have resolved a lot of problems on friends computers and my own by resetting the PRAM even if it may not be directly related.

as for your issues with motherboard v logic board, get over it. unless it causes you real emotional pain to hear a motherboard called a logic board, you're just being pompous.

I had a 13" Unibody from Oct. 08, which I guess was running 10.5.6 at the time, and was upgraded to 10.5.7 when that came out. It had the ripple effect in Safari the entire time. I replaced it with a 13" MBP and still feel like I see it now and then on certain pages, but no where nearly as bad as on the uMB.

Me too

My new (refurb) 2.53 13" also is exhibiting the same spotlight behavior. I'm gonna have to call apple tomorrow and see what they will do for me. Still within the 14 days I believe.

Yes, 10.5.8 didn't fix this issue, but I can confirm that it doesn't occur in Snow Leopard.
So I think I'm going to wait for the final release here before anything else.

I can't check with 10.5.6 since my MacBook Pro came with 10.5.7 and my original Leopard-DVD doesn't boot on this machine.

BTW, someone put a video of the issue on youtube:

Good to read that Snow Leopard fixes this flicker issue.

Have to admit that I never noticed it, until I read these threads.
Bring on Snow Leopard ;)
