I have been waiting for a mac laptop to come out without problems since I bought mine. Nope. The big screens had lines in them, the macbooks have airport problems and whines. WHAT THE HELL? Come on apple, lets get our stuff together.

Buying an apple laptop is like gambling. I don't gamble.

I think you say the same damn thing in all threads. We get it allready. I believe this thread was for people who are buying, have bought, or looking into buying a MBP and potential fixes for it.

Don't gamble. Neither are we. Small problems are to be expected. Go ahead and buy a 'reliable' Dell. Some of us choose not to. It's our money anyway, free to spend as we see fit

The good thing is that my MBP arrived this morning.

The bad thing is that it is going back. Not only did I have the CPU whine, the Display whine and major heat issues; when I ran the extended hardware test I got a logic board error code. I thought they had sorted these things out. It seems like that rumour regarding Macbook Pro logic board revisions was a fallacy. Otherwise this is a beautiful machine, and damn quick.

So I called Apple and they said that they would replace the machine despite the fact that it was a CTO order. Now I have to wait a couple of days to receive the return Fedex waybill (apparently they won't email it to you). After they receive the machine they will release the new order.

At least they gave me express 2 day shipping.

Machine not so good. Apple Customer Service excellent!

Wow I guess I shouldn't even complain then. I have the whine, but I guess at least I can turn it off by turning on comic life. The heat issue I am learning to deal with, hottest laptop I've ever owned, but also the first aluminum laptop I've ever owned. Although I wish I could get a good comparison to see how hot mine is compared to a newer revision one.

That is NOT good news. Mine is the same build as yours. It is here YAY but I can't get to it till Thursday morning. Now I'm nervous. Can you tell me exactly what I'm supopsed to be looking for? What is this whine, how loud is it and where is it coming from?

The whine is just an electronic high pitched sound that comes from the left & right side of the machine when there are no applications open and when you are running on battery power. However, that was not my main concern. My main concern was the heat an the logic board problem that was diagnosed by the Extended Hardware test that I ran.

When you get your machine make sure that you test run the Extended Hardware test by placing the Recovery disc on the drive and pressing 'D' while you power on the machine. You'll have to put the disc in the driver before you switch off the machine.

Will do. I'm hoping yours is an anamoly and not indicative of the 'revision' because mine is a ##14## number as well.

Man, after spending 3500 on a machine, one really shouldnt have to be so damn stressed about it!

I just got back from the Apple Store after taking my MBP there to address the issues. He told me they know about the whine and offered to replace the logic board which will take up to 2 weeks (WTF, 2 weeks w/o a laptop). Then I addressed the heat issue... he goes, it's not meant to be used on your lap, rather a flat surface. But I say, "it's a freaking laptop for g-d's sakes!" And he goes, "it's not a laptop, it's a powerbook." <--- Give me a f'n break!

All in all, I left with my MBP very angry. I am going to call apple direct and complain. They told me that newer models they've been getting in have been running perfect. I told him that if you know mine has issues and the new ones are perfect, mine would be defective. Anyways, they could only offer a logic board which I rejected.
