MacBook Rev A 1.6 refurb - good deal?

Hi all,

I can get a macbook air for £770 through work, it's a refurb from the apple store. I'm currently pretty happy with my macbook, the key things attracting me to the Air are the better screen and the weight + looks. How much better is the screen?

Are there still problems with YouTube etc, overheating?

Finally is £770 a good deal?

Any advice much appreciated.

I think it's a good deal. I got mine for $1350 w/AppleCare back in September. There was a period when I disliked it because it was hot and loud, but then I got CoolBook and haven't looked back

Plus, the gorgeous screen and full size keyboard put every other ultraportable to shame. The LCD is actually brighter than my desktop Viewsonic.

It is a very good deal, I agree.
If you can fork put extra money, I would recommend rev. B.
But no matter which revision you get, the MacBook Air is beautiful and you will totally enjoy it.

It's the 1.6ghz, 80gb model.

I'd love the nvidia one, just a bit pricey for a second laptop!

I purchased the same model used recently on the cheap, and I couldn't be happier with it. I have a regular plastic macbook as well, and looking at the two screens side by side the MacBook screen is horrendous in comparison.

For the life of me, I cannot figure out why there are so many whiners on here complaining about the Rev A. Were they expecting a Mac Pro in the MBA form-factor?

I agree! I have a Rev A 1.8ghz 80HHD, and am totally happy with the performance. I haven't have any overheating issues at all.

+1 ^^^ Definitely a good buy, I'm hopin' you grab that one up pretty quick. youtube is much better, 140ºF and fans about 4200rpms, not bad. Right now surfing the web, WP, and PP going at the same time = 106ºF & 2499rpms..

A little aprehensive going from a C2D 2.0ghz, but I figure the added portability will be worth it.

The lines problem only affects Rev B users as far as I'm aware.

Argh! I've just seen the price has dropped from £880 to £749, my Macbook's not even arrived, by going through our work link a voucher for £101 was applied, so I paid £779, anyone got any ideas if Apple will refund the £30?

Or even better still, would they still honour the voucher and drop the price to the new one? I very much doubt the latter, but does anyone know from previous experience?

I also bit the bullet. The MacAir fits my need for a portable computer but I could not justify the cost until now. I'm selling my MacBook to defray most of the cost.

I researched the issues with Rev A units and figured I should be ok as I have an iMac as my main machine and I only need a portable when I'm moving about the house and just do email, web browsing and occasional document development. 'Getting an Incipio Orion slipcase for everyday protection and I have an STM bag for travel where the MacAir in the slipcase can go in.

I'm excited!

Apple matched the £749 price, so i'm pretty happy - just hope the refurb unit's in good nick. They must be having real issues shifting them to have knocked so much off the cost.

Chalk me up as another "bit the bullet"

Got my refurb'd 1.8gHz with 64 gig SSD today ($1299).... brand new accessories (power brick, video adapters, cds, etc) were included, the laptop itself appears brand new as well, they seem to do a great job in the refurb process

Happy with it toying around with it so far, as I got my Verizon USB WWAN card working right off the bat

Only strike is that I can't get the Sony external USB dvd drive to recognize, I may have to grudgingly buy the specific "super drive" for it, although i'd never use it (but need it to do some bootcamp action)

Well, I've got mine and so far so good, all looks new. The box looked like something pretty heavy had landed on it, but it's all ok. I've got just over 50gb free on the hard drive now that i've migrated all of my images. I might try to claw a bit of that book, but it's pretty useable.

Fans have come on whilst viewing flash, but they're quieter than my macbook, so a big improvement! Very happy so far!

when u play dvds with the superdrive there is no framerate problems right?

im waiting till next mnth i know these will be even cheaper

Mine's a late 2006 C2D whitebook, in general usage it feels about the same, maybe slightly snappier - i'd put that down to it not being loaded full of files and programs - it seems to take longer to boot, although i'll verify this when I know it's ran all the updates.

The fans come on less often on the Air, and when they do they're much much quieter, half the volume, they come on even less since I upgraded to Flash 10.

I've not tried any DVD's but I'm sure they'll play fine, I've watched the Dark Knight streamed from my eMac and bought from iTunes and that was fine. I don't have the superdrive, but I do have some USB dvd-roms, so i'll fire it up when I get the chance.

In all I would recommend, it's very nice to use, feels like quality and the screen's amazingly bright with very crisp colours.
