^^^ The white suffers from its own problems (more visible scratches, trackpad wear, etc). In terms of durability, they're both about the same.

It all comes down to your wallet and your taste. I personally like the black one, and wouldn't mind paying the extra $125 (or whatever the upgrade cost is now) for it.

Upgrade cost is $200 at the moment, even with my student discount.

Does the MagicEraser thing do a really good job with cleaning out the oils. I've seen nothing but good reviews for it and wonder how often I'd have to use it to keep the BlackBook looking good.

Before this goes any further, are you considering getting this new or refurbed? Because if you're willing to go refurbed, the blackbook's been @ 1250 @ Apple for the last few weeks.

Probably new so I can get the new Santa Rosa platform. Not many refurbished for it, I don't think.

Not to mention the student discount brings the Blackbook down to $1399 anyway.

I bought a 17 Pro since I use needed to have both a desktop and mobile machine on a tight budget - buying the big one worked since I didn't have to buy two machines.

Outside of the extra kick in the Processor and more Ram, I'd say go with the 15" MacBook Pro - the Pros are a bit beefier than the MacBooks and you get an extra two inches of real estate. I think if you're even considering gaming get a better processor (within reason) and more ram.

And definitely consider a Refurb - they're just about brand spankin' new for a hefty discount.

Not after you factor in the HD cost. How much is it if you spec the white one with the same HD size?

I honestly haven't used it, but plenty of other forum members have, and the success ratio appears to be quite high.

Also, I'd go with the new one as well. With the student discount, there isn't as much of an advantage to buying refurb.

1374 for White vs. 1499 for Black. $125 difference. That's enough for 4gb of RAM and a couple of pizzas.

Yes, but how long will one have to wait before one with the Santa Rosa spec, LCD screen, AND is the lowest configuration even becomes available?

yeah if u have the money, go with the pro!
lit up keyboard is super nice, and the GPU is decent enough thats for sure.

If ur lookin for a computer that REALLY crunches performance, get a decent desktop computer, and get a macbook for portable purposes....

either way, its a nice upgrade from ur dell...
my friend bought one of the higher XPS models about a year and a half ago... he really took care of his laptop better than i do, and he had to call for repairs at least 3 times, I ASSURE YOU that your mac will be stronger than that.

As close as I was to getting a Macbook; a posting on another forum has convinced me that playing WoW on a Blackbook is simply not going to cut it. Hopefully with the new updates, the MBPs will be more durable and even look a little nicer!:D

An easy solution to the White vs. Black...

Go Aluminum, you won't be sorry.

So the answer is MBP!

I have a BlackBook, and yes, it shows oils, even if you wash your hands before use, but my BlackBook looks absolutely flawless right now because I just cleaned it. No scratches, no fingerprints, etc. I just wet down an undershirt, and wipe it with that, including the screen, then take a dry undershirt and dry it off by scrubbing. Looks brand new. A white MacBook doesn't show fingerprints, but it sure as hell scratches a lot easier and shows it. BlackBook all the way!

MBPs are nice, but for what you are using, a MacBook with 2 GBs of RAM would be good enough. I would even recommend you buy 4 GBs since RAM is so cheap right now! Than spend all the rest of your money you save from not buying a MBP and buy a sleeve or case, and some more accessories, or possibly a new 20' screen!

Let me repost what this other user on the other forum (Macworld's) is saying:

"i play WoW a LOT on three machines:

* my original black macbook pro 2.0 Ghz, with 1.5 GB of RAM, which i bought new for $1500 and is my main computer
* my iBook G4 1.25 Ghz, with 756 Mb of RAM, which i bought factory refurbished years ago for $1100, and
* my son's dell inspiron 9300 2.0 Ghz, with 1 GB of RAM and an nVidia 6800 go video card with a 256 MB cache, running XP media edition, which i bought used for $700 from ebay in october.

forget the iBook: it's practically useless about 50% of time. it never achieves more than 25 fps and typically spends its time around 5 to 10 fps. i can use the auction house ok, but questing is a huge pain, and pvp is simply not going to happen.

but the comparison between the dell and the macbook is instructive. i not only play both computers frequently, my son and i often sit side by side at the dining room table with them, so i watch them in action against each other constantly. on the macbook, all the video and sound options in the game are reduced to the lowest values possible to maximize performance. on the dell, it's the opposite. all the options (shaders, lighting effects, texture effects, reverb, sound channels, etc.) are pushed out to the max.

even so, the $1500 macbook is simply AWFUL in comparison with the $700 dell.

after 2 months of playing on these machines next to each other, neither of us still can resist commenting with incredulity on, and laughing at, how utterly abysmal the macbook's performance is, when judged against the dell. (i say that as an apple loyalist since my 1979 apple II. my main computer has always been a mac, since they were invented, and still is.) "your macbook can't even see that building in the distance? OMG! you can't even tell that its RAINING!!! and i'm seeing the individual water drops bouncing off the ground!!"

playing with the dell is like playing with glasses on. playing with the macbook is like playing with uncorrected 20/200 vision. the macbook, even with all settings minimized, has never gotten more than 35 fps. it usually gets in the mid 20s. last night, though, and this is not uncommon, it spent most of the night between 15 and 20 fps, a frame rate which most pc gamers would consider unplayable, though i play acceptably all the time.

the dell, even with all 3D-rendering settings maxed out, rarely falls below 50 fps and usually plays around 70 fps.

if i increase only one or two of the 3D-rendering settings for the macbook even slightly, then the frame rate drops to truly unplayable levels (below 10 fps). the idea of maxing them out, as i always do with the dell, is laughable.

i would LOVE to have a new macbook pro for WoW. i'm sure its performance would match the dell's. but frankly, i can't afford the $2000. i guarantee you that i'll be buying myself another used dell (or hp or asus) laptop for $700 or so, just for WoW purposes, as soon as i can afford it. (i can't keep borrowing my son's.)

if your choice is between the macbook and the macbook pro, and you want to play WoW (let alone any other GPU-intensive games), definitely buy the pro. you won't regret it. but if money is tight, buy a used pc with a good graphics processor for a few hundred bucks from ebay. you won't regret that either."

Another had this to say:

"I've just finished questing in the burning crusade on my macbook SR 2.2 GHz, 1GB RAM and I have to say that it is terrible. It barely runs. I can't bare to play it anymore. I'd rather play something a little less intensive like EvE online. Do not get the macbook if you are planning on playing WoW (REALIABLY). Just a heads up. I only got the macbook because it came in black. I thought that I could get away with playing WoW but the game gets 30-40 FPS Indoors and as soon as you go outdoors its 5-15 FPS (YUCK). In areas like IF or Shattrah City, forget it. Your FPS will be in the Single digits. X_X I'm really contemplating taking back this macbook and getting the pro....but I already ordered the acessories for the 13" macbook. I love this laptop to death...but if it can't handle WoW with at least 30 FPS consistantly.....you will find others like myself greatly dissapointed."

I have a hard time getting past posts like that...

This is an internet forum, people most of the time exaggerate or sometimes even lie. Not to mention the MacBook he had is outdated, and very well could've had the default 512 MBs of RAM, not to mention since that post is so old, that they could've played WoW on the non-universal binary. I played WoW with my MacBook just 5 minutes ago with the specs below, with medium settings I get 25 - 65 FPS.

To the OP, if you're serious about gaming, I'd get a cheap PC laptop and go for it. You simply aren't going to get anything comparable in a Macbook to what you'll get from a computer with a dedicated card. If you want that card, you can either spend $2000 new on an MBP, or $700 on a Gateway/Acer/HP. It's your choice. Know that if you spend $1100 new on an MB, you're going to have by far the worst performance of the three.

Regardless, I'm going with a Mac. I've been runnin' with the (PC) devil for ten years and can't take it anymore. As my old hero Owen Hart used to say, "Enough is enough and it's time for a change!"

Although this constant fighting with myself on the MB and MBP is really wearing me thin. lol

If you're going to do anything remotely to gaming then the MBP is the way to go. The macbook is only good for CPU stuff i.e Photoshop, Virtualization and Video encoding. Any image/3D related stuff such as Aperture or Gaming...even if you're only playing chess...Get the MBP once and for all and be done with it

Merry Christmas

Here is my thinking as of now:

If I get the Macbook and have ANY performance problems in WoW, I will regret the decision immensely.

However, with the MBP, there will be no regrets other than it being half a pound lighter (possibly, if no new 13" MBP is released).

I believe I will be goin' awuminum!

I'm brand new to the Mac world - and I have a new black MB w/4GB RAM on order. (It's to replace my much larger but 3 1/2 year old 17" HP laptop running XP w/512K System RAM and 64MB graphics card memory.)

As the black MB's graphic memory is shared with system RAM, does maxing out the MB's system RAM (e.g. installing the full 4GB system RAM) improve graphics performance at all compared to a MB with less than the full compliment of system RAM?

Thanks,

I have owned a Macbook Pro for 6 months

I just love my Macbook Pro it is by far the best computer I have ever owned. True It doesn't do what my PC does but then again it doesn't lock up and it doesn't get virus and it is a little short on Apps. But there are more and more programs being written every day. I my self declined to put Parrells of fusion on my Mac to run windows xp on my mac. I'm learning the hard way. I still have my PC up and running for the things I need Like in school. I say Go Mac irwin209

Hey everyone! Just joined the site and am looking forward to becoming one of the Mac community.

I'm currently running a DELL XPS M140 (don't throw any rocks yet) and am looking for something different. I've had the opportunity to use last year's iMacs at school and fell in love. Now, with several keys missing, a broken CD/DVD-ROM drive, and a love affair with Apple later: It's time for a change.

Because of mostly a lack of space, a laptop is the direction I'm going in. However, after looking at the mid-level Macbooks and the baseline Macbook Pros, I have found myself in a rut. Which fits my own needs better?

I do very little besides surf the web, play on iTunes, a LITTLE World of Warcraft, some SNES/PSX emulator fun, working with Cool Edit Pro, and a little Picasa (can't wait to replace that with iPhoto).

Also, I have a hard time fathoming switching to a smaller screen, yet at the same time, don't really know how to justify spending $400 just for the super-sized screen.

So, I bring my situation to you, the ones who know. Thanks and I look forward to joining you guys in Mac ecstasy!

I also am going to be switching from a PC to a Mac....

I'm pretty proficient with PC's (Have built around 4 of them)

Im just getting ticked with all the slow down's, hardware failures, outright bulkyness of my standard desktop. At the time i built it (3 years ago) I was able to do just about anything with it... but now its terrible.

I believe that my problem is consistent with the thread creators. I am a teacher and really need a good laptop that will always be there for me so that i can have my presentations on hand as well as the capability to have a fast and high performance machine...

Macbook seems like the right place to go but here are my conscerns.

1. I hear that there will be some interesting changes being made to the pro as well as the standard macbook in the next 4-6 months so i wonder what they will be.
2. Small thing but i really want a backlit keyboard.
3. Shared Graphics card with main memory always kind of eeks me... PC's I never did that but i hear Mac's have a different way to them.

Ok what i like about the Macbook over the Pro:

1. I hear its more durable than the Aluminum Pro... (Also i hear that sometimes the latch does not sit right on the Pro's
2. Screen size really doesnt bother me... I have a big hd tv that i would be using at home.
3. Some say that the white or black macbooks are easy to see the scratches... well for $55 why not just get the invisible shield plastic guard... its guaranteed for life!
4. Price: for just over $1000 i can get one (because i'm a teacher) where as a pro will cost me around $2000.
5. The 2.2ghz model on the macbook has 120gb already... same as the pro baseline.
6. Both macbook and pro can be upgraded to 4gb max.

Basically all you are paying for in the pro are these things:
1. aluminum case (which sucks anyway)
2. More HD space (120 on the lower and the same 120 is available on the 2.2 for much less)
3. A stand-alone graphics card.
4. One more Firewire port
5. Bigger screen
6.Backlit keyboard
7. 2.4 ghz processor option but for $2400

So if Apple decides to put backlit keys on the macbook, it will certainly ripen my choice for it.... Or if they do like they did last year with the free Ipod with purchase of computer... Cause i'll just sell it on Ebay...

Anyway thats my 2 cents
