2. The GMA950 can use upto 224MB of system memory. Many users will find that dual booting in Windows, the GMA950 does actually use this amount, provided they have a generous amount of RAM (1GB+). The only reason it says 64MB is because MacOS X is limiting this in the Mac platform.

So wait does that mean MAC OX Tiger will only be allowed to run 64MB of ram and not up to 224mb just because its Mac? Even if their is 2GB of ram for it??!!

<snip>At this point, with exception to gaming, I am baffled why anyone would stick to Windows over OSX or Linux...

Whenever I write PHP apps and send them down to the server in my basement, they don't work unless they were written on XP. If I try writing them on OS X, they bomb. The solution, start up XP, make a new file and copy the contents. Why, I have no idea, but that's one reason right there why I would keep using XP over OS X.

And FYI, last time I checked Linux doesn't have sound drivers, wireless, video, or power drivers for my laptop.

Don't bash an OS just becaues you feel like it. If Windows was really as bad as you say, there's no reason why 90% of the world would still be on it.

If the 64MB restriction is purely a driver one, then we should get people cracking on the AppleIntelGMA950 Kext right now to see if it can be removed!

If it was firmware, wouldnt that mean that XP should be limited to 64MB also?

I mean firmware that's different on Macs and other Windows PCs.... the firmware of video cards has been different in the past on PowerMacs (and one must reflash the firmware of the Windows ATI video cards to get them to work in a PM, even though it's the same chipset, AFAIK).

But what I mean is more like screen spanning, which is a video card thing, was disabled by firmware on iBooks in the past. Not by the video chipset manufacturer, but by Apple.

So I'm wondering, now, where the 64MB gets imposed -- if it gets imposed in firmware or in software. I haven't heard anyone report evidence that Windows is using more than 64MB for the GMA950 *on* a MacBook or Mac Mini, when booted in Windows. Is that true? That would obviously answer the question on the side of software (and not firmware). But if it's providing 64MB when booted in Windows, too, then it depends, doesn't it?

Dunno, if it is DVMT, it should vary between 64-224MB but I don;t think Apple have implemented this yet. I maybe wrong.

This sounds like line-endings. Different platforms use different line endings, and it sounds like the server doesn't like the line endings your editor that you use in OS X is using. You can try to change the line-ending type to match the type of server you are running (Unix&Linux/Windows&DOS/Mac) in your editor, or use an editor on OS X which /does/ let you change the line-endings.

Some one try it

To end this argument once and for all, would it be possible for a macbook owner to try the Windows Vista Beta 2 that is coming out for the public to try, or some of you may already have the Beta 2 if they have an msdn subscription. Either way, some one could try this with the aero glass feature and find out if it works to put some of the MR members minds at rest so they know whether it can or not.

Anyone dual booting could try installing the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor Beta 1 on XP and see whether it thinks the macbooks graphics can support aeroglass.
