macFUSE is evolving beyond kernel extensions

Thanks to the new FSKit backend in macFUSE, supported file systems can now run entirely in user space on macOS 26. That means no more rebooting into recovery mode to enable support for the macFUSE kernel extension. Installation is faster and setup becomes a seamless experience.

i just upgrade to tahoe and when i try this i have to reboot in to recovery for a system extension anyone using veracrypt and macfuse without weaking full security i like being able to use touch id to to buy things

The kernel extension is still the default backend when mounting volumes. You can opt for using the new FSKit backend by passing the mount option -obackend=fskit. You can skip the kernel extension approval process in the installer.

Please note that the FSKit backend is still relatively new (at least when compared to the battle tested macFUSE kernel code) and that the FSKit API provided by Apple is still not on par with the VFS kernel API. There are use cases that are currently not supported by the FSKit API. Once this changes, the FSKit backend will become the default backend.
