Hi everyone,

can anyone offer insight/advice on this issue?

I've shared info about my MBP contained in the post below..

I am now in the process of trying to upgrade to a new OS with OCLP. Tried it yesterday with Sonoma and the MacBook just kept rebooting itself when I got to the part where you have to restart and press Option. It lets me select EFI Boot, then it goes to the next screen, I select Sonoma Installer and then it just goes to a black screen with the Apple logo and reboots, going back to the screen where you can select Sonoma Installer... and it goes round in a cycle if I click on the Sonoma Installer logo - Apple screen - reboot - Sonoma Installer - Apple screen - reboot and so on...

Wondered if it was because I'd tried to move too many steps ahead with the OS, so tried Big Sur this morning and the same thing happened.

Any guidance or suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Thanks.

Hey everyone, hope you're all good.

So after a year or more of running the patched Catalina OS on my MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012), I want to upgrade to Big Sur, so I can run my DJ software, which is no longer working...

If it helps, here's some more info about the MBP.
2.5 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5
8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB

I'd really appreciate some advice, in basic language please, as to how to go about installing an upgraded macOS. If it's even possible??

I've got a couple of DJ gigs next week and it would be really helpful to have this sorted before then!

Thanks in advance.

Your MBP is god enough run Big Sur.
Download Big Sur here: https://mrmacintosh.com/macos-big-sur-full-installer-database-download-directly-from-apple/
download the latest OCLP from: https://dortania.github.io/OpenCore-Legacy-Patcher/

Install the Big Sur installer.
Open de OCLP and make a bootable USB

Restart you MBP and hold the Option key.
Choose EFI

When you reach recovery mode, choose between upgrade of clean install.
The best thing is a clean-install. In that case open Disk utility and erase the whole disk. (make sure the you have backed-up your data)

All the rest goes automatically.
At the last restart, press again the option key and choose the EFI to start.

That's all

Thanks for this, but I'm not sure you read my post properly.

I've done all of the above, but when I restart and hold the Option key I get stuck in a loop, where my MBP won't go into Recovery Mode and just keeps rebooting.

Just make a new usb and opt for clean install which means that you have to erase the whole disk before installing.
Maybe something wrong with the installer usb.
Just clean it and make a new one.

Also check the Library/Extensions folder as well (on the target drive if installing place, or on the source drive for a Time Machine migration or other clone for migration). This is a common failure point for OCLP in my experience, with any number of 3rd party extensions causing kernel panics or boot loops, or simply an infinite pause during loading. IIRC the only things that should be in there are 2 Highpoint extensions and 1 Softraid extension (something like that.)

Make sure that you d/l OCLP and BS installer afresh.
Just clean the entire drive for a clean install when you are running on the usb drive.
Wipe the entire drive. The installer will put back all. Backup your data first!

Before proceeding with any update, I first recommend being on the latest or penultimate version of macOS Catalina, so that you receive the firmware update, this is very important for Big Sur or other systems above to work correctly.

Has anybody patched an iMac 24 from 2008 with following specs to either Big Sur, Monterey? There is a SSD installed in it. And does it run smoothly? TIA

You probably didn’t select the internal hdd correctly. With you OCLP not plugged in, 1st boot to the recovery option and fully wipe the oem Mac hhd, reboot with your Open Core USB and try again. Should work. I’ve got a 2012 rMBP on Open Core Legacy Patch, and it is great

Hello. I have found 2009 mbp running Monterey. I was surprised as i haven't checked project status since I upgraded my mid 2010 mbp to Catalina. I realized that even old macs can be upgraded to the newest macOS with some limitations.
Would someone advised me what would be optimal version for mid 2010 13” mbp now upgraded to 16gb ram and ssd currently on Catalina.
Could it be BigSur or Monterey? Would maps and photos apps from Catalina work on Bigsur or are they working?
I understood that There is proglem with Maps on Monterey and with USB peripherals and internals as well during instalation. Is there anyone who runs Monterey or higher on mid 2010 13" (mbp 7,1)?

Thinking also about getting some few years newer MBP. But it may not be needed for my light work.

If I install it on external drive it does not mean it will work on internal, right? Or that I can swap them.
Thanks for opinion

Hi, @Frantisekj, I too have a MBP 13" 7.1 mid 2010 with 16GB RAM and with SSD.
I can tell you that some people write that they can also use this Mac with macOS Ventura and Sonoma (NO Sequoia!). I tried it too, but found it so bad that I wanted to go back to High Sierra. In my wife's 2018 MB Aluminium, however, I left Catalina with the dosdude1 patch.
My late 2013 iMac 14.2 27" iMac, on the other hand, was PERFECT with Sonoma and works fine even with Sequoia, a thousand times better than Catalina. But with Sequoia, unfortunately, I have some minor problems such as the graph and automatic layers in Preview not working properly and AirPlay mysteriously showing only some iPhone-YouTube videos to the Mac and most showing a gray background and a ban sign.
However, from what I have read in the "unsupported" Forum, regarding your MBP, maybe you can get good results even with Monterey, which is more stable than Big Sur anyway.
You just have to try and decide, but my opinion is that this MBP cannot go beyond Catalina with the dosdude1 patch and learning how to update it to the latest Catalina update and also learning how to find, download and use earlier versions of iMovie, PowerPoint and other software still "not Metal"

does anyone know if the 3,1 will work with OCLP and a NVidia GTS 970 PCI and Big Sur or later?
The 970 has 2 6-pin PCI-E plugs which I think are 75 watts each plus another 75 through the slot, which seems within the 3,1 spec.
