I am having issues with this. I upgraded to Big Sur, and I can go into Desktop & Screen Saver and I can select the macOS, Catalina, Mojave, and the Solar Gradients under Dynamic Desktops - when I select macOS, I get the Big Sur aerial picture - that works fine.

However, the other macOS (the Abstract Color background) is portrayed under Dynamic Desktop, but when I select it, I get the Catalina dynamic background.

Again the Abstract Color under Desktop Pictures, but when I select macOS Light, it is the right one, but when I select macOS Dark, again it is the Catalina picture.

When I check the folder (/Library/Desktop Pictures) I have a folder named Previous WallPapers, but none of the Big Sur ones are in there... Where are the dynamic desktops located in Big Sur?

What's going on?

I guess those are simply bugs that will be fixed in lagter betas and the final release. Don’t forget you’re running the first dev beta after all.

For those of us without Macs, is it possible to extract the tone variations in the .heic as separate images? Under Windows 10, I opened the abstract .heic and I now have the brightly coloured abstract desktop, but today I saw some screenshots which show a darker variant, which I assume is the dynamic version.

Yes, the multicolor wallpaper is dynamic. Here is a link where you can find the dark mode version of it.

OK - I give up... Can someone please help and explain what I need to do...

I have the Abstract.heic file. I have put it in the Library/Desktop Pictures/Art folder. I can select it in "Desktop & Screen Saver (from the Art folder). It shows up as a "Dynamic Desktop". But alas, though I select Automatic, it always shows as Dark (Still).

What am I doing wrong?

So it looks like the latest update fixed some of the issues. Now I can select the Abstract as a Dynamic Desktop, but it is always dark. Catalina, Big Sur, Mojave, and Solar all changes from light to dark through the day, but not Abstract???
