I have noticed an annoying problem in the last few days (macOS 14.1 RC).
Audio stops working or hiccups, audio devices disappear and reappear, Sound settings are unreachable, and at the same time applications using web based frameworks stop working or crash. Web browsing, pages that require an audio device (e.g., YouTube) or tools such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams and the like cannot be used.

The only solution at the moment is to restart the Mac but it is not a solution because the problem occurs again.
I cannot figure out if the problem is related to the AirPods Pro since the first freezes occur with the earbuds plugged in.
Does anyone else have the same problem?
I too have found this with 14.1

- audio breaks
- Safari web pages freeze
- kernel panics on bootup or wake from sleep

I did not encounter kernel panic but the rest is there.
All applications that would like to access the audio/video device don't work... as do those that integrate webKit (for example, I can't see the content of e-mails in Microsoft Outlook).
I tried doing a complete reinstallation from recovery, hopefully the problem won't occur again.

Been using it for few hours, no new problems so far.

Messages finally includes new notification sounds.

Mail does not.

Pretty uphappy with 14.1 so far. Seems more unstable than the initial 14.0 release. Some newly-introduced issues related to window management and app / system hangs:

- Some apps like CARROT Weather display a "ghost" window showing just the shadow of a non-existent window when minimized.

- In general, lots of apps hanging. I notice it mostly with window management apps (eg: Magnet, BetterTouchTool) wherein they state they are unresponsive in Activity Monitor and won't restart properly even if force-quit. If you try go log out and log back in, there's even worse hangs and most startup apps don't launch correctly in that state. It requires a full reboot.

- A couple instances where the system was hanging so badly, overall, that it required opening terminal and manually typing "sudo reboot" to force a reload.

The above hangs have happened to me multiple times within just 12 hours running 14.1 and never happened on 14.0. May need to roll back.

Every re-start since updating to 14.1 results in my selected desktop background being displaced by a plain, grayish background. Settings>Wallpaper will show my selected wallpaper as still being active, but of course it is not. I have to select another wallpaper, then re-select my chosen wallpaper. Weird.

Still having issues with spaces where swiping to the second space will break keyboard/mouse input and cause it to be delayed on that window. I need to switch to another window and switch back for the keyboard input to show up and start responding again.

I decided to upgrade to 14.2 Developer Beta 1 out of desperation for how buggy 14.1 was, since rolling back to 14.0 would be a major pain. I am pleased to say that even though it's a "beta", it's much more stable. No more random applications hanging or needing to reboot every 30 minutes.

It's been about 8 hours now with no issues besides that cosmetic "ghost" window issue where the desktop always shows the shadow of a window that's actually minimized for some apps, but what I've learned to do is minimize / hide those few apps in my 2nd space and then switch back to my primary space so the shadow isn't visible at all times.

I was thinking the same despite my MBP is my production box just to escape the beachballing. Sometimes being on the leading edge might not be so bad...

No more beta versions for me - even no RC. I only download official final versions in the future.
Yeah, I understand and respect that position. However, the 14.1 update was literally unusable for me, so anything would have been an improvement. Apple decided to open up Developer Betas to everyone so long as they do the basics of registering for a free dev account, so it's just a matter of hitting a toggle in System Preferences enable it. I then hit the same toggle after the upgrade to disable it until 14.2 actually comes out.

I am just ticked because this is the 3rd or 4th time since Big Sur came out where there were incredibly bad bugs related to application and system hangs. They always escaped the public betas but got realized super quickly upon official release, leading to them being patched relatively quickly but only in the next subsequent dev update, meaning users would have to wait about a month with a nearly unusable system if they stuck to official releases. Quality control is definitely slipping.

14.1 was a garbage update.

1 Notes can still show blank notes and the app needs to be restarted to show notes. No fixed in this update.

2 Sidebar in Stocks app still scrolls on its own

3 It forces me to add a contact for recovery and after I did that it won't stop asking me to add a contact. Even selecting 'Not now' won't make the message go away. It even says I added a recovery contact that I did not add.

4 Preview app breaks after a while and won't open any files. System needs rebooting to fix it.

5 macOS volume control doesn't sync properly with AirPods Pro. Have to keep nudging volume up and down until suddenly the AirPods jump to the right volume.

This was a **** update. Complete bollocks. They should have pressure tested it and the public beta testers failed in their duties too unless their reports are going to be dealt with in a year.

"Scary fast" means much less when we have scary bugs.

Thanks! Blame me for your problems. I’ve been beta testing Macs for roughly 15 years and always report issues and file feedback, but go on and blame me, the beta tester, for “failing in my duty” 😝

What a joke.

What a joke.

Read the last part of the sentence I wrote.

And it's not "my problems". I am not Sonoma.

I've beta tested OSes a lot longer than you. Nobody is blaming you. If I was "blaming you" I'd be blaming myself.

It's the quantity of reports that raise a bug's priorities.

If there aren't enough reports then issues remain at the bottom of the list.

However, the engineers shouldn't be missing stuff that is right there on the surface.

Youtube Picture in Picture and full screen is also borked when connected to external displays. This could be Google playing crafty, or just another really obvious bug.

Zoom/maximize button while holding down control can also break randomly. When the bug happens it will only give you full screen option.

Have to reboot when this bug appears. It's a great laugh when a basic OS feature breaks after 22 years.

I've been having the same issue with AirPods Pro. It's such a small thing but very infuriating.

I have dug deeper.

The culprit is Wacom drivers 6.4.4-2

With this latest driver installed the option, shift and command keys do not behave normally on external keyboards. In the Finder it is impossible to select multiple items. In Photoshop it is impossible to use tools that require these keys for shortcuts.

Do not install this driver version if you rely on external keyboards. I have no idea why Wacom's drivers have to break our keyboard driver. Go back to the previous drivers.

No wonder the Linux guys decide to write their own tablet drivers.

Actually, I did the same and still beachballing...finder is a big cause, preview slow to respond and slow to open files. However, for a beta, it seems that it's stable despite the beachballing. I have been beta testing for Apple for a number of years, but this is the first time testing on a production machine. In the pass, I have used a separate partition but find that I don't get to interact with the beta as I am always in my main partition. So far nothing hangs...

This morning I was surprised...all beachballing gone, finder unresponsiveness gone, preview slow to open and close file gone, so a snapshot last night might have applied...currently, I am on 14.2 beta-23c5030f but wish I had took note of the previous id. Thank you for the bold move...this is the first time I am running a beta on my production MBP and not in a separate partition. The beta is behaving like a final release...

Sonoma 14.1 seems to be out now, took multiple (automatic) restarts to install over 14.0 on my M1. No beach balls for now.

I'm glad to hear things are working better for some reason after initially no improvement, but build 23C5030f is macOS 14.2 Developer Beta 1. Nothing newer has come out since it was initially posted.

I am now starting to hear some coworkers say the 14.1 has been causing beachball'ing and a need to reboot, so we're passing word along to avoid the update and stay on 14.0. I don't know if some app we rely on for work is making us more prone to it or what.

I am experiencing considerable beachballing here and various (but not all) apps hanging for at least 10 seconds. Transmit and LanScan are two examples, there are a few others. Apple app store hangs up and "spins around" for at least this long. Universal binary apps don't seem affected, a very unofficial observation on my part. Like everyone else a full power-down restart temporarily clears the issue. All this mess started after updating to 14.1. Mac mini M2 Pro 1tb/16gb.

my bluetooth mouse suddenly refuses to connect. It shows but when I click on "connect" it shows the spinning wheel for a second but it does not connect. Works fine on my old MBP and iPad

Was able to make it 8½ days until I'm now having to reboot my 2018 Intel Mac mini on 14.1

I think that's the longest I've gone without rebooting in a LONG time. Used to go a month easy. Now things come crumbling to a halt due to memory issues.
