Hello guys,

Haven't been here for long as all was working fine. And it still is. But want to thank again for all effort you put into and with Tahoe you have plenty of work for years I guess 😁

Even I was not advised to to it directly, I first made installer disk for latest Sequoia, but then performed OTA from 15.1 to 15.7.3. I was stressed a bit as machine restarts so many times that one do not know whether it is natural or ending in some kind of loop. But all went fine, OCLP downloaded on background needed patches and I can use it happily till I get some M1. 😁 And I forgot, it was non retina 15" 2012 MBP9,1

On other side I experienced my, I guess, first hard freeze when I was stressing book with creating catalina installer and doing other things. Probably because of FeatureUnlock Enabled as I was dealing with AirDrop. That is only thing that doesn't work properly. I can see phone or other Mac but phone does not see me. And that is the most important direction phone to mac, but Blip helps to overcome that.

I had some questions as I tried other machine as well and was not sucesfull. But I put it in other post.

Important UPDATE. Sory for bothering. I put RAM from MBP 2012 instead of original one (from time before i upgraded it to 16 GB that I passed to 2012 MBP)
All errors are gone and mac is running on Mojave. Waiting for Monterey. Woudl you advice Sequioa? Or USB 1.1 is killer?

But some of my questions remains.

As I mentioned in previous post, I had success with 2012 MBP OTA but also troubles with MBP 2010.

I had some general questions as I can not find answers. Sorry if they are there but I have not found them.

Is it normal that original installer will disappear at some point? I needed it for another install and it was gone. Now I backed it up but several hours of downloading is not pleasant.

Can be OS Installed directly on external drive without using USB installer? There is not much info in guide.

To my latest experience. I tried to make Sequoia USB installer for MBP 7,1 before a I realized that Monterey is better option. I had Catalina on that mac for some time. I moved disk to current MBP and now wanted to pass old one to friend. I am unable to boot that MBP from whatever USB I created with Catalina patcher, OCLP Sequoia or Monterey. Tried so many scenarios and different USB that I became lost. Some failures was from wrong indentification of my mac as MBP6,1 instead 7,1.
As I said I made USB Sequoia disk but it never worked for me.
I am cunfused from OCLP a bit. You put so much effort to make it dead simple but I am still quite unsure what I do in number of steps and in stress not to run something in my internal drive instead USB. Why?

First, you use just word drive. Please whenever we are working with USB, use USB drive or USB flash disk ot just word drive. OCLP shows system names of disks not one user put on them.

Is Installer made model specific or just EFI partition? If Installer, is it saved somewhere for later use or I have to spend time to build it every time? Could I save it?

Last time now when I tried, it offered me EFI partiton as final step. When selected it does nothing or give no result prompt. Even OCLP offered EFI partition, I do not see one in Disk utility and none shows when booking on target mac. USB is GUID as Disk utility shows.

Words in Build and Install section "Use on installers or internal drive" ever build stress whether I have not click and start process on my internal drive that wont be able to stop.

I spend two days to make this mac work again but so frustrated now as I do not know where I am doing something wrong. I took internal drive out as I propbably put there one where was Sequoia before and in verbose mode it said something like: (it is acquired through camera OCR, so m is usually n)

Can be OS Installed directly on external drive without using USB installer? There is not much info in guide.
No. You need USB installer with macOS and OpenCore on it. After boot installer USB, you clean install OC macOS on another external drive. Hold down Option key on boot to get macOS boot picker. You need to select OC EFI on external drive, then you get OC boot picker. Select macOS on external drive. Order of operations very important.

Is Installer made model specific or just EFI partition? If Installer, is it saved somewhere for later use or I have to spend time to build it every time? Could I save it?
Model specific as it boots and installs unsupported macOS on your old hardware. Needs specific OC EFI.

The logs are above my pay grade, but have you tried asking an AI (Gemini, Claude, ChatGPT, DeepSeek) for analysis and recommendations?

Installed OCLP 1.5.0n w/no issues.

Thanks all for reply. I updated post. It was all my dumb fault. Wrong RAM. Machine was year in drawer.
HAs anyone Sequioa on It? Or Monterey is safe bet? Thanks

But that my experience brings me now to question. If I came across USB drive and see Install Monterey on it for example. Can I somehow identify for what model is that installation made?

I have what might be a dumb question.. Does this community have an IRC channel somewhere? Something more appropriate for realtime chats?

I installed Sequoia 15.7.3 to test on my iMac 14,1 using a spare external SSD. Been running it with out issue for a day pretty stripped down except for a firefox install.

One thing I have noticed is when switching between Misson Control Spaces Desktops, there is a wide vertical black space between them, unlike in Sonoma where they were seamless with a slight dissolving effect if switching slowly between them. Other than that I have really noticed anything too different.

Anyway to remove the bar? Note - this is not affected by turning off "Tiled windows have margins".

Just finished upgrading to Sequoia on my primary external m2 drive from Sonoma via USB stick. BTW back to seamless spaces as mentioned in my previous post.

Yeah, been in there a long time ago.. about the same as this. Thanks. Was looking more for IRC type chats. I went ahead and installed the Discord app on this 2012MBP/Sonoma. Getting used to how to use it. I'm definitely not very good at it.
Well, seems it is like IRC. I'm on there now in the OCLP area. Like I said i was in there a long time ago. Just saw a couple of my posts from back then lol. Didn't know what i was doing really. Thanks

Looks like Apple is sneaking in the Tahoe Upgrade in with updates now. Just had a notification popup announcing - Did I want to download and install now or just download for now. No information as to what it included, so closed it off and checked out the updates.

I Just had Security responses and system files checked on auto no other options, which I've now turned off.

Including a screenshot of the update dialog box - they were all checked on when I originally opened it.

You have to double check those all the time-after every update!

I did in fact, after upgrading to Sequoia yesterday from Sonoma. First thing I did was to check, as there have been instances to reset back, as my previous post explained I just had security updates on and no other automatic check boxes checked.

But this is not an automatic download. Tahoe is in with all the other items and is checked to go without me checking them. But it has given me the option to install or download via the dialog box from notifications kind of circumventing the fact I don't want to install it as my auto is set to off. How many people will hit the button?

Nothing is staged and nothing downloaded. I've never seen a full System Upgrade appear in the Update section which is for macOS app updates and system point updates.

What's strange, Tahoe appears in both locations.View attachment 2591968

Clarification,

I am fully aware of the auto update issues at and to double check the update settings after system updates and upgrades. What I did not realize is that the Upgrade to Tahoe is included in the Updates section and is checked on to install.

What my main concern is, that a full Tahoe upgrade option could be triggered since it is auto checked in the Updates, via clicking the notification dialog box with out checking what is actually in there.

And - the fact that Also Available section gives you the option to update. Some people may assume it's just the listed item, in my case Command Line Tools while in fact the full upgrade to Tahoe is listed inside and checked on ready to install.

This just opens up two more (un)avoidable upgrade paths for people. It's an easy mistake for people to make.

Hello all, quick question. The last time I updated was sometime in May 2025 on 2.4.0…I noticed there’s another update to 15.7.2 and I updated to 2.4.1 to prepare for the download. I started the update , OCLP opened then closed down. Is that supposed to happen? I’m used to updating and then OCLP with a pop up message stating “you’re updating would you like OCLP to update metal libs”? Or something like that…I have an 11,4 2015 MacBook Pro
