Except for the music app, Big Sur is very stable, so much so that I would suggest staying on it until Monterey reaches a much higher version number.
Followed your instructions and just upgraded my 7,1 to the most recent version of Big Sur from Catalina.

So far, so good and everything for the most part seems to be working.

Keeping my fingers crossed that maybe Big Sur improved the w5700x GPU drivers, etc. to reduce the number of freezes and auto-restarts during sleep I have been plagued with for the past year since buying the new Mac Pro!

Haven't seen this mentioned anywhere... There is a 11.6.3 beta now, so Big Sur is still on for at least another system update.

(OK, I forgot to actually look :( ... 11.6.3 beta was mentioned in a number of threads today. Anyway, updated to that, no probs... )

The resulting menu is the same; still thanks for the suggestion.

It was a joke, marked by the smiley face emoji :)
Of course, it doesn’t matter how you get to the Software Update preference pane.
Just as a fun fact, it can be directly started with an alias to /System/Library/PreferencePanes/SoftwareUpdate.prefPane

As with iOS 14 and 15, Apple might support different versions of macOS at the same time for longer.

Well, it DOES matter when I read various complaints about upgrading problems.
Ever since 2012 I load updates as they come and mayor installations when they seem mature.
Never had a problem with it. I dislike alternate installation attempts and non-standard hardware as well.
Macs should be used as bought. Just my opinion.

And the joke was accepted :)))

Of course not. Either they're doing Content Caching, or they're caching a copy of the installer and running that.
Having updated with the full 11.6.2 installer, I was surprised to have Apple Command Line Tools deleted. I had to reinstall them with xcode-select –install, them update them to the latest version from the Software Update preference pane. Just a heads up for anyone using the full installer for updating.
I took a look at Content Caching and all I can say is that it’s good that it can be configured through profiles :)

I have trouble typing login credentials with Apple Wireless Keyboard(that was paired already) on a Late 2014 Mac mini. Once you logged in you can connect to it in bluetooth preference and it works without any problems. Also enabling accessibiltity keyboard in loging items does not seem to work. The solution for me was to buy a Magic Keyboard from a local Apple Store as you can connect it using lightning to USB cable and use it as wired to type credentials.

Any issues? Feedback appreciated!
I noticed that Big Sur is more severe about missing application signatures; I like that.
It simply means that protection against uncertain products was increased.

I have a specific problem since the update to 11.6.2 - on the two updated Macs, virtually all CMYK profiles are no longer displayed / made available system-wide. But only since the update, which includes a Colorsync modification among other things. This does NOT affect the RGB profiles.

I have tried everything, even a reinstall of 11.6.2 via the recovery partition (11.6.2 DMG), safeboot, nvram, unfortunately without success.
Then I reproduced the problem on our old Mac Pro, which conveniently still had a virgin 11.6 Big Sur installation in it. There we put in our Xerox profiles, which were also recognized and made available.

Then we updated to 11.6.2 - and unfortunately the same problem occurred in this installation. Our profiles were gone, but funnily enough, so was the default CMYK profile from Apple itself. The experimental update to Monterey then solved the problem.

2-4C-Profile-weg-BigSur-11.6.2- 2021-12-24 um 15.54.14.jpg

3-4C-Profile-Monterey-12.1- 2021-12-25 um 15.29.17.jpg

>>>> So at this point I can only warn everyone not to install 11.6.2 , because we were able to reproduce this on two devices (the old Mac Pro and an iMac 5K from 2019) with three installations. The one who depends on different professional CMYK profiles in the PrePress area, should better skip this update, maybe a fix is still coming !

Addendum: We use Chronosync to keep the profiles on multiple Macs in sync, so all Macs access the same profiles in the same structures in the same locations. And yes, the permissions for these directories and profiles are clean and correct/unchanged).

Since we rewrite our printer profiles twice a year, we had the option to rewrite our CMYK profiles on a test basis, based on old profiles/measurements. With interesting results: While our previous version 4 (standard) profiles do not work, the somewhat slimmer rewritten profiles with the outdated version 2 are recognized without problems. (we profile with i1 Profiler).
