A late 2013 MBP with integrated graphics only. In hindsight that proved to be a good choice!
That's probably why you don't have the issue. You see when the macOS Loading bar reaches 80%, that's where it disappears and the screen goes blank. I have a feeling it's not able to recognize he Vega 20 properly so it's failing but for some weird reason if I leave the display settings on default it boots every time just fine.

Catalina occasionally hangs at shutdown (maybe 1 out of 4 times) on my 2018 Mac Mini. It closes everything and all I see is the desktop wallpaper and mouse pointer. Command-Option-Escape shows no running applications and I wind up doing a hard shutdown and a full Disk Utility First Aid sweep on the next boot, which is annoying.

I did an upgrade to Catalina first, and then did a clean install with restore from Time Machine, and it still does it. I haven't seen hanging at shutdown mentioned in this thread - is anyone else having this problem?

I imported about 16GB of photos from my iPhone yesterday. Oddly, Catalina didn’t update the reported size of the Photos Library. I even tried copying the file to an external drive. While it acknowledged the right amount of data (80GB) that would be copied, it still reported the old file size (64GB).

Now when I boot up, I get a new login option with the username "Disk Password" and
the Disk Utility icon:

Never been more disappointed in Apple Mac OS than now. Hangs, malware, problems.... Just shows everything runs in cycles, time to go back to back to Windows now I guess.

Mojave no issues?? I wish..

Endless bugs on Catalina at the moment. And bugs that are still present from back to Sierra. It’s just ridiculous. We get .1 updates with new emojis.
I’m a big Apple supporter but I’m starting to lose it.
Installed Catalina from Mojave (Mojave installed fresh about 7 months ago):

- imported hundreds of pictures from iPhone 11 pro on 13.1.3 in photos, selected to delete the files after the import, the files are still on the phone but photos on the Mac doesn’t see them. Had to delete them manually from the iPhone.

- took me 3 days of trialing and testing in order to get the Apple Watch unlock to work. Apple Watch 4gps on 6.0.1

- an old bug where selecting and highlighting text on a PDF is selecting random words instead of the words you select is still there, but reported 7 months ago, still there. High Sierra has the same issue. Not on every PDF, but it isn’t a pdf issue, with acrobat it works fine, it’s an issue with preview app.

- logging into a second user account is breaking the continuity/handoff features on the Mac and iPhone. Apple Watch unlock stops working, personal hotspot stops working, continuity camera not working, handoff not working (works only from Mac to phone not the other way around), only solution is a reboot and log into one single account.

- can’t sync pictures in albums I created in photos on the Mac, they just won’t sync on the iPhone. Tried EVERYTHING, rebuilt library, reboots, nothing.

- switching users takes at least 10 times longer than in Mojave.

- sending a lot of photos with airdrop from Mac to another iPhone or from iPhone to iPhone is not reliable at all, sometimes it ends the transfer and the photos don’t show up, sometimes they are all double and they are always sorted in a random order and not in chronological order.

This is the worse MacOS release ever and the team doesn’t even bother fixing the bugs that are reported on their website.
All they care about is emojis and wallpapers.
I’m really losing it.
Does anyone else experience the above issues?

Tu exageres. Leopard was unstable (hence the solely bug fix “Snow Leopard”). Lion/Mountain Lion was the same. Apple was a bit too ambitious with Catalina, but I’m sure it will get better over the next few weeks. Heck, a version of Windows 10 in 2018 was deleting user data.

I’d wait for another point release for Catalina. As for Windows, remember it was only about a year ago when their update was deleting user data. Most businesses still stay 1 or 2 major updates behind the current release.

I encountered a bug on my MacBook Pro 15 (2019), if I change the scaling to anything but the default, 'I' can work fine all day but if I reboot, when the loading progress bar reaches 70%, it just disappears and hangs on a black screen until I force shut it down, a few more reboots and it boots fine but happens every time when I reboot. I reported this to Apple, probably an issue with Catalina

This was a FileVault bug for me. Try to disable it and see what happens. Though this seems fixed on 10.15.1 beta for me so far. (Or anything related to FileVault screen and switching to macOS)

I always have file vault off because when I tried it once I felt it made my laptop very laggy despite the high specs you see in my sig so no that's not the solution for me :(

I can't wait for this 10.15.1 to come out hoping it fixes this issue so I can choose the scaling I want (1440x900)

Ah ok then maybe its related to something else. I had the exact same behaviour on a recent maxed out mbp that I received. I tried 10.15.1 beta to see if it was fixed. So far no issues but performance dropped a few %. I also use 1440x900.

We run music with this MacBook Pro 2017 version everything worked great with Mojave’s but it won’t run half of the programs in Catalina. It does the password renter glitch, it must have a problem in the xpc helper sandboxing permission requirements because it error messages unable to scan when downloading from an apple site, and gives an xpc helper not installed even though it works with SOME programs after you finally get it running. We are working at it, but I think they have missed the boat on the permissions and the installer too.

I have this exact same issue on my 2019 mbp 15”, v20, 32gb, 4tb model. I thought it was a hardware issue so I formatted the disk and reinstalled Catalina and lo and behold, it does it again. When this happens I’m forced to shut it down and restart.

I’m convinced that this is a software bug. Phew, I thought I was the only one with this issue. Glad I’m not.

Also I have a 2019 mba, 16gb, 1tb. I have noticed when the apple logo appears during startup or reboots, the square box surrounding the apple logo flashes momentarily in red. It happens occasionally and never had this issue while I was using mojave. A second bug is after putting the computer to sleep for a long time (more than 24 hours), and I open the lid, the screen is black and doesn’t come on unless I press the power button.

Catalina is the worst, buggiest macos I’ve ever used since 2012. But I still think it is miles superior to w10.

Thank the lord for your message because for a while I thought I'm the only person on the internet with this issue!!

See: Downgraded to Mojave, best thing I ever did!

I had to upgrade to Catalina again thought because my OCD cannot stand seeing the red icon notification about the update in the settings app which you can get rid of but comes back after a reboot. Can't wait for Catalina 10.15.1 hopefully it will fix it. I can't believe how Apple can't properly support their own flagship models with such bugs which drive me crazy because sometimes I have to force shutdown 10 times before I am able to boot and no I cannot look at the ugly default scaling it is horrible.

Agreed. I’m also using 1440x900. This pretty much confirms it is a software bug.

When I switch from Gregorian to Japanese calendar, the Calendar App stops working and just freezes / hangs. No amount of force-closing or re-starting works, only switching back to Gregorian calendar makes it work again immediately.

Am I the only one with that problem or is it universal? Can somebody try this out?

Just made clean Catalina installation by formatting, now going to copy my data from my external backup hard disk, no Time Machine, I notice some folder icons as if they were documents, others OK just like folders.

Did it happen to others? Why? How do I solve it? Isn't that the folders and files there contain are damaged? Yet I did everything as usual, except for data on an external hard drive, formatted by installing the operating system and then copying personal data by hand, never a problem.

Important info, if I start on another computer with Mojave, this icon problem doesn't exist !!!

Help!

How do I solve it?
Same happened to me in that earlier post in the thread. It does not seem to harm anything and the folder is there will all the data, it just looks off since the folder icon is missing.

What you can do to fix it is select a folder that has the blue icon like you want then hit command-i to get this popup. Now single click the blue folder icon shown in my screenshot. Then hit command-c to copy it. Now do the same command-i on the white folder and select the same blank white spot where the icon should be then hit command-v to paste the blue icon in and you are all set.

I did this manually on the several first level folders I had with this just because it annoyed me. There are others levels down I don't ever see, so I did not bother. Maybe somebody has an idea how to automate this, but I just did mine with this manual method and it worked okay.

Thanks ... at this point I decided not to make changes and I really want to see if the next update will resolve the problem, it's really a shame, I never expected a strange bug like this.

I identified a certain situation, in my case, folders created before the year 2005 and not modified after that date, they don't have the icon with blue folder, what a very strange thing!

Maybe somebody has an idea how to automate this,
I did a test. Created a folder and gave it a custom icon. In Terminal I noticed a file created in that new folder, zero bytes(!), called "Icon?". Yes, with a question mark at the end, just to make the "rm" command fun. Anyway, I deleted it (rm -i Ic*) and the custom icon went away and was replaced by the default boring blue folder one.

So maybe check one of your folders in terminal for an "Icon?" file. if it has one, delete it. If that works then you could trash all custom icons by recursively deleting that file.

Anyone else using eGPU with significantly less performance on most recent PB (yesterday) vs 2nd most recent?
