Same experience on 2019 MBP 16", 2.4ghz, 8-core, 64 gig ram.

Have run Malwarebytes, Clean my X, removed 120gb of material I don't use. No difference it's almost becoming usable and was perfectly stable the hour before I updated.

Found this thread looking for others having the same issue. I also started having massive slowdowns after updating to Beta 4. Xcode, for example, has been almost unusable.

Then, while investigating this morning, I've found that just moving the cursor continuously can make WindowServer jump to 107% CPU usage. Once I stop moving the cursor and let things settle down, it goes back to about 17% on a 2015 MBP. Right now, as I type this, I can see the Activity Monitor icon spike when I start typing, and then settle down when I stop.

This is all using the MBP's own keyboard and trackpad, with nothing plugged in.

Edit: I also see that the spikes I get from the cursor are much higher than doing the same tasks using the keyboard: e.g. scrolling this page using the trackpad is super slow, fast as ever with the keyboard.

Ever since updating to macOS Monterey Beta 4 (from Beta 3) my entire computer has felt extremely slow. Switching window focus, typing and having a major delay before letters show up, etc etc.

According to Activity Monitor, WindowServer is taking up 80-110% CPU consistently.

Has anyone else run into this?
Yes I have found it extremely sluggish. Noticeably different to beta 3. almost unusable.

My lag all happened within Chrome. Looks like M1 Mac isn't affected? I have MBP 13"/i5 (2019).
But good news. Today I noticed Chrome has new version released,
Version 92.0.4515.131 (Official Build) (x86_64)
After the update, speed returns to snappy, the same fast response time as in Safari.
Monterey b4+Chrome, now working harmoniously. I'm very happy now.

This beta has felt MUCH slower than the previous 3 betas on both my M1 MacBook Pro and my M1 Mac mini.

Happening in first party apps like Safari as well as third party apps.

A reboot gets it back to almost normal for a few hours but then I have to reboot again. Was not an issue in the previous betas at all.

I am also seeing the exact same issue.
No issues with any previous betas. Problem started when going from beta 3 to beta 4.
WindowServer is at 100% CPU.
MacBook Pro (16-inch 2019).
No solution found. Feedback report filed.

what i did was uncheck open using rosetta it started working really fats for me now...

FWIW, my feedback report is now showing "Recent Similar Reports: More than 10", so I suspect this is probably pretty high on Apple's radar

Was busy searching for this issue and came across this thread.

Mac mini M1 with 16gb of RAM. After upgrading to Beta 4 Window server uses around 100% CPU. Everything on my Mac mini feels sluggish.

I have the same issue with 11.5.1. No beta.

Slow caps lock, lagging system, WindowServer taking way to much CPU compared to few months ago.

OK as per another post I found it seems to be related to having an external display connected. A restart without the display is working fine.

I can confirm that after a restart without the external display, everything works as expected.

The problem is that I need the external monitor for work!

Chrome is painfully slow. Since I'm a developer I discovered that, when a page is trying to load, if I open the dev tools (CMD + ALT + I) it gives somehow a boost.

On Edge I get occasional spinning beach balls. But fast!

My 2019 MBP has been slow as well. My 2015 iMac is running fine.

I did think it had to do with my new hub I just got. I have unplugged the hub and it did not help but I have not restarted and just use the laptop because I need the monitor hooked up right now. It just hit me that it could be the beta a couple of hours ago but like I said, my iMac is running fine. Of course I no longer have an external monitor hooked up to it anymore.

It takes forever to focus when going from one app to another. Most apps are just slow when doing normal tasks.

Glad I came across this thread.

For me, it was everything running slow, not just Chrome, but also Safari. The whole OS just went sluggish (it wasn't when I first installed Beta 4)

I reset the MacBook, and reinstalled B4 from scratch and it's absolutely fine now...

Edit - just to confirm, no external screens used here, so that wasn't a factor for me.

I'm so glad that I'm not the only one facing this issue. I've been going crazy over the sluggish performance since the Beta 4 update. I second that WindowServer takes up too much CPU when connected to a 4k display+FHD Display, and chrome is super laggy most of the time.

I didn't notice a post above about WindowServer. It was taking up almost a gig of memory. I didn't check CPU. I forced killed it which made me log in again but everything is running normal now. It is currently using 379 ram and 27.4 cpu. I will keep my one on it.

Well, the computer is running normal but I lost contact names in messenger again, I think it was beta 2 last time that happened.

Life of beta testing.

FWIW, I've confirmed that I eventually see this problem both plugged in with the discrete GPU and on battery with integrated.
