Even though this setting is off, Apple Office documents are showing extensions.
It's in the Finder menu in Settings/Advanced. They are turned off by standard, I always turn them on.

You have both misunderstood the off state.

The on (ticked) state is to forcibly show all extensions. The off state is to not forcibly show exertions, rather it is up to the individual file as to whether its extension is shown.

No, I haven't. I don't have any problems with this setting anyway. It's already set it to unchecked by default. And all file extensions are hidden. However, after the last update, when I open and close Apple Office documents that I have saved and used before, it adds the extension. I saw people on Reddit who encountered this issue after the last update. This is definitely a bug.

Right that the default is unchecked. Wrong that unchecked means all file extensions are hidden. It means that it is up to the individual file.

When you say "add": Pages documents always have an extension - there is nothing to add. Do you mean shows (unhides) the extension in Finder?

Note that in all cases Finder's Get Info will show the extension. It is just the main views (Items, List, Column and Gallery) where the extension can be hidden.

So what happens after you set file individual files to hide their extension and then edit and save?

What I have:
I have that Finder setting unchecked (files determine their own visibility of extension in Finder).
All my Pages documents have Hide extension enabled. As shown a) in Finder's Get Info (the box is ticked) and b) in a Finder search for all Pages documents.
I open, edit and save one of the documents in Pages.
The file extension is still hidden in Finder.

@gilby101 Don't get hung up on the “Add” part. Of course, all files have extensions. As I mentioned in my first post, even if I say Hide extension from Get Info for a specific file, after a certain period of time, it activates the extension of that file again.

In the image below, I just used the May document, I don't even save it, it is saved automatically, and suddenly the document extension is shown. The extensions are not visible, as seen in the files next to it. I say hide extension for this document from Get Info, but it appears again after a certain period of time. By the way, if I use other documents, they also show their extensions after a certain period of time.

In fact, macOS saves files without an extension unless you write or specify an extension.

Has anyone else seen their "Manage Storage" button totally disappear? All I get when clicking storage settings now is the list of what is using space. My System data is a full 25% of the harddrive. I've deleted the library cache and logs but nothing has changed. But, I can't get in to see what's in iCloud, whether it's saving docs to the cloud, etc. What happened to the "review duplicates," check this, check that.

I only have the Storage Settings. I remember a "Manage Storage", but not when I saw it the last time. Maybe never in Sequoia.

The iCloud storage can be managed here and with "See all" you get a list with sliders to turn it on and off for every app that can use iCloud.

I my documents folder I have three Numbers files from 2017 and the other ones are all from this and last year. When I disable the Finder setting to show all extensions they only disappear for the old Numbers files and everything else. The ones from 2024/25 are still there.

I found some Pages files too, also some old and from last year. It's totally random which of them show their extension when it's turned off, but it's always the same.

I have never seen that behaviour. If the hide extension is enabled (in Get Info) it stays enabled.

I get the opposite with Pages. A new document has the extension hidden. I have never seen files spontaneously changing the 'hide extension' behaviour. Though they may have done so without me noticing!!

That may be how the files were created and the difference was masked by "show all extensions" being enabled. I take it you have checked the setting with Get Info.

I realise what I am saying is not helpful to either of you. I can't explain or reproduce what you are seeing. Sorry.

The info window of course always shows the extension.

The setting to show all extension was always turned on, when any of those files were created. I never forget that if I do a clean install for example, it's one of the first settings I change.

I only turned it off for testing.

One screenshot on my Desktop now also is showing the extension. The only difference to the others, it's from last year and I recently moved or copied it to the Desktop from another folder, while the others were created there directly:

1) The "default browser setting" is not sticking for me in 15.4.1 on M1 mini. I think that's new in 15.4.1.
2) The Appearance "auto" setting does not persist and returns to "Light" after reboot.

I tested both on my M4 mini on 15.5. No problem with changing the default browser and rebooting.

The second one seems to be still there. I set it to Auto, it went from Light to Dark then and after rebooting it was Light again but the Auto setting is still there. When I do change it again it's keeping light. Not sure if this was just a coincidence and the auto change happened right at that moment when I was rebooting. Sunrise was at 5:11 a.m. and now it's 5:33. Seems I really rebooted right into sunrise. :D So there seems also to be no problem in 15.5.
