From the text on the download page for the InstallAssistant packages:

"Once downloaded, all you need to do is install the pkg and the full installer of macOS will be in your applications folder."

So after you install the pkg, an Install macOS Sonoma app will be in your Applications folder. You can run that app to upgrade the current machine, or use it to create a bootable installer for macOS Sonoma. After the installer app has been put into your Applications folder, you can delete the InstallAssistant.pkg file.
Thanks for that. After installing the package for the 14.7 update, still the only install app in my apps folder is for the old sierra OS (which I can't trash BTW). Don't understand why I'm not seeing the one you say should be there. I was able to install 14.7 from the apple icon / system settings. That said, what is the point of the installassistant package installation?

Sorry, I haven't a clue. I've never heard of anyone having a problem before now.

Suppose you want an installer for 14.6.1 now that 14.7 has been released - it won't be available in the App Store. The same goes for OS versions which aren't compatible with the hardware you want to use to do the download (you can download dmg files for a few much older OS versions though, even on incompatible hardware).

If you're running macOS Monterey or higher, the Mist app can be a convenient way of creating installers. In addition to installer apps, it can also create installer USBs and ISOs.

Just to update. The last issues I had with Sonoma was the stuttering and delayed action of the Magic Trackpad. This last update fixed this issue 100%. No more delay or lag. It took awhile for Apple to get it fixed but this 14.6.1 did the job finally.
