The SONOS app, which is an Intel processor compatible app and thus requires Rosetta, has stopped working on MacOS OS 26.1 and later.

I have tried contacting SONOS but they ignore me for some reason (I have a pair of ERA 300ss, ERA 100, 2 x Roams and a One.). I also have 9 HomePods. I tend to use Airplay for the SONOS speakers but Airplay is unreliable on Mac OS and for the SONOS speakers only I used to use the SONOS app (the SONOS app does not support HomePods, of course) on my MacOS machines.

Anyway, I now get a hard crash when I start the SONOS app and have to Force Quit. This happens on all my MacOS machines (we have 7 of them). The iOS and iPAD OS apps work fine.

Is anyone else having this problem or is it that no-one cares? 😂

Are all Macs on the same OS version? Is it an update to the Sonos speakers that has caused it or has the MacOS app been updated?

I have one Mac on the MacOS 27 beta, the others are all kept on the same version (26.6.2 ). However the problem started at 26.6.1. The laptop on the beta has the same issue both before moving to the MacOS 27 beta and now using the MacOS 27 beta.

There have not been any firmware updates to the SONOS speakers for some time and certainly not during the occurrence of this problem.

I have the latest version of the Sonos app, dated May 2026.

The Sonos Mac App is pretty much dead, though it's hard to find a clear statement from Sonos on the subject. It's had no meaningful updates for a very long time and Sonos direct people to the web app instead.

There are 3rd party alternatives, like this one https://mbc-for-sonos.app/guides/sonos-mac-app-alternative but I don't use it so don't take that as an endorsement.
It was updated in May of this year. The web app works fine on MacOS machines, not tried on iOS or iPAD OS . Apps for iOS and iPadOS work fine.

You can only configure certain aspects of the Sonos system from the iOS and iPadOS apps, which is really irritating and is the one thing I do not like about the Sonos ecosystem.

I think you are correct in that the MacOS app has no information on their site and is not mentioned on their updates page. You can still download it but it no longer works. It looks as if they have deprecated the McOS app without telling us and want you to use the Web App on Mac OS machines. I presume that this is the same for Windows but have not tested it on my Windows desktop.

It is the fact that it worked and then stopped without any warning. As I mentioned this is a Rosetta app ( being compiled for the Intel processors), so I am wondering whether are quietly deprecating Rosetta functions without us knowing.

Appreciate the comments, thank you.

Update: I found the issue was a setting in System Settings > Privacy and Security > Local Network which explicitly stopped the Sonos app from accessing the network. Toggling this on, allowed the Sonos MacOS app to work. I have never seen this setting before and wonder whether it was something added in the current updates. It is more than possible that it has always been there and I have never needed to use it, but given that the problem started recently, gives me pause to think something changed in MacOS to either add it or change its state for the Sonos app. It also happened on all my MacOS machines at the same time.

This is a relief as this will allow me to access my Sonos apps even if the internet is down from my MacOS machines.

Mebbe keep an old Intel mac around to run it.

As an aside, I used a Sonos system at work and found it to be buggy, using the work-supplied Android app.

I was so put-off by Sonos I'd personally only use a wired speaker system.

I think Sonos, or the former CEO, said something about the Mac app during The Great Debacle, but it was overshadowed by the general mayhem of the time. It’s not helpful that there doesn’t seem to be a clear message about it anymore. Various online communities are full of the opinion that it’s not going to ever get an Apple Silicon version, and that is certainly my recollection, but I tried to find proof and couldn’t.

The recent updates, by the way, apparently removed some of the system configuration features. I suspect that’s because they needed a rewrite for the new underlying framework, but there’s no longer a team there to do it.

It is irritating that Sonos have not given any indication of when there might be an Apple Silicon version of their MacOS app. The web app is not a viable solution in the medium to long term as it depends on a viable and persistent internet connection.

I know they have been spending their time on the mobile apps (since they completely broke it in their new release last year, I think it was) which seems short sighted but which is matched by the current “do everything on your phone” generation. But some view on their plans would help. Based on Apple messaging, this time next year the existing Sonos MacOS app will no longer work as Apple is deprecating Rosetta support in MacOS 28.
