I'm running 10.8 on my MacPro 3,1 (8-core 2.8) with 32GB Ram, Intel X25-M 160GB SSD (esata), 4x2TB RAID1+1, ATI R6870 (flashed with EFI ROM). Absolutely no problems.

The system is actually more stable than it was running 10.7.4.

That's my take as well. Skipping 10.7. Hated it. 10.8 hate it less but you gotta move on up sometime:) And hey, fixed OpenCL and kepler drivers.

No problems here on 3,1 ML.
There was a bit of weirdness with sleep and wake though. I found a thread that suggested deleting the dock preferences and since I did that all is well.

Dont bother with ML. I installed on my wife's macbook and its largely pointless unless you like dictation. Airplay on the computer is basically a useless toy.

2008 Mac Pro here. I'm having an issue with my USB ports. I posted in this thread but didn't get any feedback;

I think this is a ML issue as it's only started since the upgrade after 6 months plain sailing.

I have these 2-Port USB Cable KVM Switch Keyboard/mouse USB switchers for my Mac/PC setup (I'm using a 2008 Mac Pro).

Since the upgrade I'll be using the PC and try to switch back to the Mac. When I switch back the Mac won't send power to the mouse. If I directly connect it I get the same problem. To resolve I have to reboot

Other then that I've not had any trouble.

Mac 3,1 2.8 8core - 6870 - Sandisk/Intel X25M, Pcie Esata card, and 20/30/20 PLP Monitors.

Works great.

A very minor item, I'm getting oversaturated dock icons because of my wide gamut monitor. Desktop, finder and all the other app looks right except the dock.

My advice do not load Mountain Lion on 2008 Mac Pros. You will be sorry - I was. I reinstalled 10.7

statements like this are meaningless without an explanations.

ive got ML on my 3.1 (2.8 octa) which i upgraded from Snow Leopard (missed lion out) and ML runs as good or maybe slightly better than Snow leopard.

Well that's all I need to know thanks for the thorough unbiased review. FWIW 10.8 was better at beta1 than Lion at 10.7.3.

Hm, why ? If you have old HDD as system disk, and 2600XT crap....you can not have them forever.
Rest of the 2008 system is still very powerful. With 5770 and SSD, it is just fantastic !

Don't be so loving of the 08 machine. I've just becomes very pee'd off with mine.

Remember they were hailed as USB 2.0, well they are not. We've just had to buy a new scanner the requires 2.0 and it doesn't work. Yet it works on the wife's MacBook Pro from 2009 - also USB 2.0. If you have a device that requires full USB 2.0 you are screwed.

I know it's that because we did a fresh install of Lion on both machines and just installed the scanner software. Works flawlessly on the wife's MAcBook Pro both in the independent software and through Photoshop CS5.5.

Was contemplating doing a ML upgrade this weekend, not a chance in hell now. Apple are not getting anymore money from us.

The Early '08 Mac Pros do indeed have USB 2.0. Don't spread misinformation.

I have a MacPro 3,1 with dual 2.8GHz Quad Core Xeon, 16GB RAM, ATI Radeon HD 5870 video, 256GB SSD boot drive, 2TB RAID 0 (2-disk) data disk. I upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion on release day with no problems during the upgrade, or after (so far).

I use Time Machine to an external RAID connected to a dual eSATA PCIe card, have both bluetooth and USB mice and keyboards and bluetooth trackpad. All are working fine.

So ... no problems here so far ... :)

So I read there's a problem with 3,1's and 5870 in 10.7, where when the computer wakes from sleep, GPU performance drops to around half. On fresh boot performance is 100%. HFG and others in this situation, did you find this issue is resolved in 10.8?

----------

Some information about graphics performance can be found at
http://www.barefeats.com/mtlion.html

It seems graphics performance may be quite a bit slower in mountain lion. The article doesn't seem to shed light as to why. Perhaps somebody could share some technical information? (Maybe its because ML has 64 bit graphics drivers?)

not minding ML at all so far... actually rather impressed. much, much better than Lion...
recon i can get used to this quite easily actually.. :)

I guess I never noticed any problems with mine, but my Mac Pro probably never sleeps as it performs some server functions all the time. :)

I hadn't read of any problems either ... do you have a link or further info?

Have you tried a device the REQUIRES full USB 2.0 into a 08' Mac Pro?

Or are you basing your statement on what Apple said at the time of sale?

Pastry, why does this pop up when plugging an iPod in to either of the front ports on my 08 Mac Pro then?

Ha Ha. What does system profiler tell you on bus speed for all USB ports?

Oh it says 480MB. The even worse thing is, when I plug that it at the front it stops the External from connecting. I am getting fed up with this damn machine, nothing but ***** problems!

I plug my iPod Touch into my MP 3,1's front ports every day, it works fine and when I put 50 GB of music on it in one hit it went through at USB 2.0 speeds. If they were 1.1 speed ports (12 mb/s) then 50 GB would have taken a day and a half.
I suspect you have a software issue that may be resolved by a clean reinstall of either your iPod or your MP.
Or possibly it is confusing your front ports with the Bluetooth USB host controller which is indeed 12 mb/s speed. I can connect my Touch via wi-fi to that but it is slower than the front ports.

10.8.1 is chugging away with no problems on my 2008.
3.2 ghz with a radeon 5870, 16 GB owc ram, owc ssd booting 10.8, ocz pci-e ssd raid booting windows 7, newertech pci-e e-sata card, and a pioneer sata blu ray burner in the 2nd optical slot.
no sleep issues, no kernel panics . . .no issues at all, really.

usb ports all 2.0 as well.
