I can confirm that I have successfully upgraded my MacPro with Intel Xeon X5365 @ 3.00 GHz 2 processors, 8 cores

Following this HowTo on Youtube it was a bit of struggle here and there (especially with front fans removal and getting it back in place) but at the end Mac booted with 2 new CPUs

credit goes to this guy midphase ;)

I couldn't find Arctic Silver 5 so I used Noctua NT-H1 thermal paste and we will se how it performs in few days

here are some screen grabs with new CPUs

I also run small benchmarks Geekbench and Novabench just to see what temperatures will be before and after benchmarks

BEFORE BENCHMARK TEMPS

AFTER BENCHMARL TEMPS

please do tell me is it normal for CPUs to have different temps (3C difference !?) or it's too early because of the paste that didn't started to do it's job? :)

I have also read somewhere that just to be safe I should kick fans to a minimum of 800 RPM ... just in case ... should I?

and here are benchmark results

Geekbeench

3 degrees Celsius = 276.15 kelvin

?? now i am confused :(

Sorry to confuse you, it was meant as a difference, not absolute temperature. 10 Kelvin is just the difference between 30 °C and 40°C, for example.

now here is the hint ... as 7300GT is not supported in Yosemite I did next thing

I have created bootable USB with pre-patched Piker-Alpha bootable Yosemite installer and I restored it to a USB flash drive using Disk Utility.
This is all nicely explained in other post by Mr. Zarniwoop so credit for this goes to him, as well as to other great people like Hennesie2000, Pike, Tiamo...

Then to be sure i restarted Mac and tried to boot to USB via holding ALT key and it is bootable. So i shut down Mac swap 7300GT with nVidia 220GT and booted to OS X Lion without boot screen and knowing that i won't be able to boot to USB via holding ALT key I simply selected USB as a startup disk:

:apple: > System Preferences > Startup Disk ... select USB and hit RESTART button
it was a long restart but after a while OS X Yosemite Installation screen appeared and after 20min things are looking like this now

OS X Yosemite is successfully installed and is working :)

Next task is adding flashed R9 280X and continue from there, and I would like to do this before starting to update OS X Yosemite to 10.10.3 just to see if everything will work on 10.10 so that I can make rollback if needed.

Very curious with your end results. I'm in the same boat where i've had my 1,1 since Dec '06, and for the most part its been fine but its definitely starting to show its age.

My thought is to I put a little money in it now and get a couple more years use out of it(plus get a 970GTX for gaming on windows)

or

Build a new hackintosh since i'm not a fan of the new trash can mac pros....

GPU UPGRADED and MacPro is equipped with MSI R9 280X

This GPU card is a big one ... no more room inside MacPro case as it used to be

Anyway GPU in place, Apple logo and boot screen and here are some screen grabs

it looks OK so next day i will test it's performance and watch for the temperature

and before I go to sleep just to share my way of flashing MSI R9 280X
GPU is installed in PC, Win7 x64, Omega drivers 14.12
Downloaded tools GPUz, ATIWinFlash, MSI R9 280X 3GB Mac EBC.rom.zip (Credit goes to Mr. Zarniwopp)

With GPUz I made backup of Legacy ROM (as everybody says that it should be done)
ATIWinFlash downloaded and extracted to C:\ATIWinFlash
MSI R9 280X 3GB Mac EBC.rom.zip renamed to mac.rom and copied to C:\ATIWinFlash

I found these commands on some Russian forum and here is how I did it:

START > Accessories > Right-Click on CommandPrompt and RunAsAdministrator
cd C:\ATIWinFlash
atiwinflash unlockrom 0 (return window should be ROM UNLOCKED)
atiwinflash -f -p 0 mac.rom (return window should be with statistic and message RESTART WINDOWS TO COMPLETE BIOS UPGRADE or something like that)

Start > Shutdown > Turn Off

Disconnected MSI R9 280X and installed in MacPro

chimes … and here comes the boot screen :apple:

trying to fit Mac Pro with Transcend TS-PDU3 PCIe USB3.0 controler
so i read somewhere that this cheap controler works on OS X using CalDigit kexts ... I acquired TS-PDU3, hooked it with 4pin MOLEX to SATA power cable from superdrive, used CalDigitFastIO.kext, CalDigitUSBxHCI.kext via KextUtility and one restart :)

it did somehow get recognised and is working

but I am not sure that speeds are OK or not
at this moment I only have one USB3.0 HDD so for test i run benchmark of disk speed via default Mac Pro USB2.0 port and same test with same HDD via Transcend TS-PDU3 PCIe USB3.0 so that i can compare results and this is what I get

Toshiba USB3.0 1TB HDD via MacPro USB2.0

Toshiba USB3.0 1TB HDD via Transcend TS-PDU3 USB3.0

it is faster but I have expected for read/write speed to be 70,80MB/s or more
I will have to test it with another USB3.0 HDD

Update to Yosemite 10.10.3 via AppStore was successful!!!

first installed PikeYoseFix and then updated via AppStore to 10.10.3

as trying to figure out what's working and what's not I had some problems making my old SAMSUNG ML-1520 printer to work in Yosemite

so to make it work this is what I had to do
install universal printer drivers for Mac ... SPLIX 2.0.0

then start up terminal and issue commands

sudo su (enter admin password)
sudo sh -c ‘echo “Sandboxing Relaxed” >> /etc/cups/cups-files.conf’
sudo launchctl stop org.cups.cupsd

After that if you are lucky the printer driver should start to work (which it did in my case)
terminal commands had to be issued because there is a problem Sandbox related ... here is detailed problem discussion

Just to add that I have successfully booted into OS X Tiger 10.4.11 with AMD Radeon R9 280X and old HDD that has Tiger on it.

OK ... so summer is starting, AIR temperature is 31C and first instabilities are shown
I did some heavy rendering from USB3.0 external HDD via TRANSCEND PCIe and when MacPro is full loaded (CPU&GPU intensive rendering at same time), inside temp is very HIGH (around 80-85C) USB HDDs start to click so I was scared and stopped rendering job ... had to restart MacPro and kernel panic showed up. As soon as I disconnected external HDDs from Transcend PCIe I could start up MacPro again while they are connected kernel panic shows up ... so I disconnected them again let MacPro chill down and everything is same as before, and I continued rendering again and again when temp are high enough scenario is the same ... HDDs are clicking and I have to chill down MacPro and disconnect USB HDDs so I can start Mac again.

strangely fans are at 500-600rpm even at full load ... no auto boost or I have to click something for that to happen ?

Also some GPU glitches are shown now and there ... any ideas?

When you know you are going to stress the system, just boost the fans to 1500 rpm before you begin. Try creating a few fan profiles to play with and test. See if you can keep under 65*C maybe 70*C - of course if the room ambient temps get warm just moving air alone isn't as effective.

After six months it appears that Transcend TS-PDU3 PCIe USB3.0 controller with CalDigit kexts is not good combination. It is unstable, it causes kernel panics, disks start clicking from time to time (power issue probably) so I decided to change it with some other USB3.0 controller.

I purchased Orico PME-4UI USB3.0 controller and also Orico UH3C2 USB3.0 HUB
You can find these on eBay or AliExpress for 15€-20€ for usb controller and 30€-40€ for usb hub.
I chose these because I red somewhere that this controller doesn't need drivers for OS X Yosemite and El Capitan and HUB because it has power adapter + two usb ports for fast charge of phones and tablets.

Installation was straight forward:
- first I deleted CalDigit kext used for Transcend controller and repaired permissions with Kext Utility
- then removed Transcend TS-PDU3 and installed Orico PME-4UI USB3.0 using supplied users manual
- started MacPro and it booted with no errors
So it works right out of the box using Apple drivers that comes with OS X Yosemite

Here are some test results using my 1TB Toshiba USB3.0 HDD

Next thing that I will try is stress test ... I'll connect 3x USB3 HDDs and 1x SmartPhone and 1x Tablet and of course do some HDDs benchmarking while everything connected to HUB

What also needs to be considered is that Orico controller comes with SATA to 4pin Molex power adapter that occupies one HDD bay inside MacPro1,1 so what I need to do is to find one 4pin Molex male to female extension cable so i can connect it to spare power connector from CD/DVD and free up HDD bay so I can use max of four HDDs in my old MacPro1,1

Here are some images of Orico products that I found online

and here are some results with newer usb3.0 hdd WD Elements ... pretty satisfied :)

I've been trying to register to netkas.org for about 3 weeks now, no luck either.
I need to flash my 5770 and trying to get hold of the EFI ROM file.
