Just another update. I took the processor board apart only to find a ton of dust (well, it looked more like soil; enough to bury a corpse) and that the thermal past on the northbridge processor had moved to greener pastures. I Cleaned everything, repasted everything and put it back together. So far so good. No freezes, no KPs. Of course maybe it's too early to tell I've only been running it for 2 or 3 hours, pushing the processor though to its limits with the yes test and geekbench. Fingers crossed.

Thank you all especially tsialex

PS. Just to be on the safe side I pumped up the fans with macs fan control

End of the road scenario complete. My 5,1 is dead. After fixing the northbridge issue it booted/worked for a few days and then it stopped. No booting at all. When I press the start button all fans start as expected but nothing happens, dark screen that's all. So, I am out for a 5,1 with nothing in, no disks (only the trays), just the processors and (without ram i can use the old one). I looked around at ebay but I found nothing like that (so far). The best deals I saw on offer are in the good old US of A but the shipping to Greece, where I am, is prohibitive (3 times as much as the 5,1). So, if anyone can direct me towards a european establishment that could sell such a 5,1 would have my eternal gratitude.

PS. I do intend to get a studio in the future but not just as yet.

Thanks!

What about a 7,1 from one of the usual used sources spoken about on these forums?

Otherwise there is iPowerresale for Mac Studio.

I have a working pristine 5,1 dual X5690 machine with original box, all original documents and accessories but it would be prohibitive costs to ship it.

My only concern with regard to 7,1 would be that in a couple of years apple would make it obsolete... No more updates no more anything. It was in this forum that I read that probably the 7,1 will receive its last OS upgrade in 2025. Thus, I prefer to save money and go straight for a studio, the M4 variety. The manner in which Apple obsoletes its hardware is unnerving.

Thanks for your reply!

Who knows, that's in the future. You have a dead computer at the moment and looking around for another 5,1 is not really a good idea because that's equally old.

The forum has a lot of people who say lots of things and always take them with a grain of salt.

The manner in which Apple obsoletes its hardware is unnerving.

With that, should you even be buying another Apple machine at all? Something like a HP or Lenovo workstation will keep going for longer and can be upgraded a lot more then any Apple machine (even the 7,1 for that matter).

That's something for you to consider if you find Apple's ways unnerving.

I got a good deal from ebay in Germany, a 5,1 dual processor 8 core. Now I only have to replace the processors with my 2 x5690 and fill in with disks and gpu. Fingers crossed!

You do have a valid point but I am used to macs and macos to the point that switching to windows feels like sacrilege... 😆

Don't get me wrong, I am not bashing windows and certainly v. 11 is not bad at all but I am used to macos, it feels familiar territory and I like fcp which is my platform of choise (I use others as well but only when required). It is the 7,1 mac pro I feel it is unfairly dropped and any spending on it, at this point in time, seems to be in vain.

Here I am again, another Mac Pro 2010 facing death again. When I press the on button I can hear the relay but no light. There is a red light next to the front right processor but nothing happens. The fans on the psu do not spin at all. The same is true with a different psu I put in so I do not know how to check it any further. Is there a way to check whether the psus are in good condition before I put them on the Mac Pro?

Out of interest do you live close to sea?

I had an office in Mallorca, right next to the sea and the humidity would corrode the circuit boards.

I would import Mac Pros from the UK to my office and they would last approx 1 year before dying. In contrast the Mac Pros I kept in the UK, in a dry environment, have been working without fail!

Not by the sea. I guess both Mac Pros are old and tired and decided to part this world quietly...

As money is a bit tight for the mo I bought a Mac mini m4, the basic one. I have to say I am impressed.
