The colours red, green and blue of the lights usually put on these things to look "cool" to those people who like shinny lights in/on their computer.
Oh, well, explains why I have no idea what it is.

My son recently built his own gaming computer and was upset at the blingyness of some of the parts. I told him he wouldn't have to look at them if he hadn't bought the transparent sided case. I think the point was a bit lost on him, but it brings a tear of joy to my eye to have the kids building their own machines. Ah, the memories.

I believe he mentioned RGB because most RAM that ships with heat spreaders only have them for the looks, to appeal to the gaming community, same as RGB. Cool, I guess, but unnecessary.

I doubt anyone here doesn't know what RGB is.

But then he wouldn't say stuff like 'server grade memory'. I mean if it's got high latency issues, it doesn't matter if they added ecc and slapped on 'server memory', it's gonna perform poorly.

And then the thing about 240hz. Large hz helps everything including productivity, but then you have to lower image quality for 4k and such...

Asking about heat spreaders makes sense because heat is always an in issue and not the same as asking for rgb, and although I said above that ddr4 memory doesn't need heat spreaders, they still do drop temps a tad. Not enough to matter, but they worked wonders on earlier ddr

Yes great ones for me too, just built a new machine a few weeks ago myself. Of course anything you buy now has the stupid lights on it. Well the ram did not but the case and motherboard, oh CPU fan ... All I want is a power and hard drive activity lights then I am happy man.

Apple has always had a huge markup on RAM. In the case of the Mac Pro, it is user upgradeable, so you should not be upset. Just buy from else where.

The advantage to buying Apple RAM is it is covered under Apple Care. A handy convenience if you don't want to be bothered.

If you install your own ram and have a problem with the machine, just put the original back in and bring it back to Apple for service.

I would be upset if it was soldered on RAM, but we get the freedom of choice with this machine so I recommend you be supper happy...as I am!

It makes me upset though Apple has added such an enormous markup to the RAM. They are charging double what they should be. That eBay seller is able to make a profit selling 4 of them for $748.60 while Apple is charging $800 for 2 and I'm sure Apple is able to negotiate a better price from the supplier than that eBay seller. That makes me believe the base model Mac Pro is really a $3k computer, not $6k. There's not much we can do about that though. At least we can save on upgrades shopping around.

Yeah sure, only you have to replace all of the ram because it's high latency and ram always goes for the lowest common denominator settings. And what about the to ssd? Enjoy slow reads and writes once the cache empties

Well, obviously you should only buy RAM that has super fast SSD.

😒 Is this supposed to be funny

Can you elaborate on the Apple storage cache issue?

If they are right that it uses tic ssds, tic uses 3 bits per cell versus the 1 bit for slc and 2 for mlc. That shortens lifespans and causes it to be slower with it needing cache for an extra speed boost in exchange for making it cheaper to make larger capacity ssds

Tlc ssds are not enterprise or business ssds. They are slow and don’t last long

That RAMs latency is so bad and slow my 4200Mhz RAM can run circles around it. LOL bottom of the barrel RAM, It’s as if People bought a Bentley with cloth seats.

This is ECC RAM for servers. There does not appear to be lower latency RAM in this specification. It is not "bottom of the barrel RAM." It's very high-end RAM.

People seem to be going bad bananas over the specs of thisnew Mac Pro without having any first hand experience with it. I doubt apple cut corners to maximize profit.

My assumption is Apple put a LOT of thought into the 7,1 to make it as fast and STABLE as possible.

Actually they did, they sell a six channel machine with only four ports populated, a clear cash grab and speed hit on the ram throughput speed. It is only a small percent hit, but just the same a corner cut to force an upgrade for those that have to have the proper configuration.
