The patcher script does work for some apps (especially Web browsers), but not all.

Another annoying thing is that for the apps it does not fix, even if you run the app via

Less:
open /Applications/<app name>.app —args —use-angle=gl

and it works, if you do an update of the app it will ask to relaunch after the update, and freeze since it does not restart itself with the extra args. Very annoying.

@kOoLiNuS I asked about OCLP 2.3.2 because I thought I saw something in the OCLP 2.3 release notes that gave me hope that they had fixed this issue. Bummer.

I've retired my 6,1.

Replaced with a 2021 16-inch MacBook Pro.

I went to my local Apple Store yesterday. They had an M3 Ultra Mac Studio, nano-texture M4 Max MacBook Pros, an M2 Ultra Mac Pro, a Studio Display and a Pro XDR display. I walked out very envious of anyone who can afford these objects d’art. I sure can’t.

Not sure what to do with my trash can. It may get pressed back into service when my work Mac (that I use to WFH) has to be returned when I retire in a few months. We’ll see …

It is interesting that a 12 year old Mac Pro still can perform on par with much newer Macs. I know the XEON processor was ahead of its time, and most people fitted the Mac Pro with 32Gb or 64GB of RAM, and the D700s are really good graphics cards, but still…

My trash can has 32 GB and dual D700’s. I’m a bit disappointed that the only way to get 5K resolution on it is to run two Thunderbolt-to-DP cables to a specialized monitor that has dual DisplayPort inputs, like the Dell UP2715Kt or the HP Z27q. Apparently these monitors were only made during a brief period about 10 years ago, are rare as hen’s teeth, and aren’t cheap. (Plus, they’re only 27”.)

I feel like having dual D700s is pointless as it doesn’t give me any additional resolution options, it’s just faster than the D300 or D500.

I've abandoned the whole OCLP route after 18 years of hackintoshing. Earlier this year, I purchased an M4 MacBook Air (1TB SSD and 24GB RAM) for my wife and a similarly speced Mac mini for myself; they are excellent devices. These replace our much-loved mid-2015 15" MacBook Pro and my 2013 Mac Pro. I've repurposed the Mac Pro as a media server for now; also runs Parallels VM's for Windows 11 and Linux.

I feel you there. I feel like I should buy a new Mac (that I can’t afford, but hey) and revert the trash can back to running Monterey or something.

OCLP is amazing but ultimately the system is going to run better on the last OS it was meant to run on. (I still have a 2010 cheese grater on Mojave.)

I’ve made some pretty dumb purchases in recent years - bought an LG 34” Ultrawide 5K2K monitor before buying the computer to match it; bought the 2013 trash can only to find it can’t drive the LG at full resolution; bought a 2018 Mac mini to replace my 2012 Mac mini media server in the living room, but it only has a 128 GB SSD which is too small. Hoping I don’t do something equally dumb with the next one …

lol - we've all been there...

I disagree that the 2013 Mac Pro runs better on Monterey; I have no issues with it right now, on Sequoia 15.5. I know I am only using the MP sporadically, but still, when I do, it's great.

Although I do not use my 2013 Pro as much as my 2022 Studio, it is rocking openSUSE Tumbleweed quite well. While it's not Apple software, it is Apple aesthetic 🤙

P.S. - Love my cylinder... well before its time. Imagine a M chip in one 2/3rd its height. ❤️

I don’t run Sequoia so I can’t argue that specific point, but the continued problems with Electron apps and them freezing up with “red blocks” in the UI keeps me from agreeing with you. While there are workarounds for some of the apps, there aren’t for all of them and it’s a pretty notable flaw/inconvenience. (Although, having said that, there appear to be some forks of the Python electron_patcher.py script that might fix a few more apps, which is … encouraging.)

Also, I’ve read somewhere that more recent versions of the OS disable certain features when used on Intel Macs. I don’t know how widespread the restrictions are but I’d probably opt for an older OS that doesn’t have any such issues.
