I know the topic of disappointment with current magazine pricing has been discussed under threads about specific titles and certainly can be viewed in the reviews for the titles currently available in the App Store, but I thought it would be prudent to start a thread to discuss the topic more generically.

One of my major letdowns with regard to the iPad is magazines. First, I had envisioned a more organized approach under the iBookstore. Today, some magazines have one app that is free where you pay to download monthly issues for a price. Other magazines have an app for each month's issue for a price. Why not organize them all in the iBookstore where they can be downloaded and held on your bookcase (or a subsequent magazine rack)? Second, what's going on with the pricing? I realize that some have argued that these magazines are only at the same price they retail for on newsstands, but many times they are more and I don't buy my magazines from a newsstand for just that reason: price. Why can't I have an annual subscription for the same $10 I pay today (or less since there are no printing expenses)? Lastly, where are all the titles? I realize the publishers did not want to incur the expense of creating digital versions of every title for a product whose future was unknown, but if they are using current purchase trends as an indicator they may come to the false notion that users aren’t interested, when in fact, they are just uninterested in the current model.

I just don't understand what happened here. I thought Apple was further along with the publishers on this one. My opinion is that they passed on Apple's offer to organize their titles and offer subscriptions (or very cheap issue by issue downloads) in search of profits, which I think was a big mistake.

Okay, I feel better…

I've been using Zinio. It has a large selection of magazines and the format in most cases is merely scanned from the newsstand version. But the pricing in Zinio is not nearly as bad as that $5 an issue price for Time. They give you about a half dozen free issues so you can get an idea if you like it. Then you can buy either individual issues or subscribe for multiple issues. Be careful. Some of the subscriptions are for only a handful of issues so they are actually a worse deal than the individual issue price.

Apple's organization of magazines is scattered and they need a newstand type apps for sure.

As for everything else it's just the price of being an early adopter. Publishers didn't see the iPad too much sooner than we did back in Jan. It probably going to take a year for everything to come together.

In the meantime Zinio does a good job. Prices of most titles are expensive considering they are digital. But that's due to publishers not really understanding the new market. Although I'm not sure why they think if people resist $5 hardcopy mags while they'd be willing to pay the same for a digital version. The main thing is that there isn't $5 worth of good info in most mags. Even the current issue of MacWorld seems dated by the time it hits the stands.

Zinio prices are very reasonable. You can subscribe to many magazines for under $20 a year.

I'm gonna second Zinio.

I kept renewing a free 1-year Macworld subscription from this link. Great way to start on Zinio, especially now on the iPad.

I just don't understand what happened here.
It's been three weeks and two days since the iPad launched.

I think all of your concerns are pretty spot-on, but I personally think that it's probably going to take months and months of publishers playing around with the content and pricing/subscription models before they figure out something that works better for them (and you).

I doubt they'll go through the iBookstore when they can build their own app and charge companies directly for advertising in it (and are free to do whatever crazy kind of ads they want to). I just can't see Apple letting them flying without restrictions if they publish through the iBookstore.

Who knows though...

Patience people. You need to give it some time to work itself out. iPad has only been out a few weeks.
I also use Zinio and enjoy it.

Zinio is too slow for my liking!!

I agree, magazines should be in the ibook store, the whole iPad apps thing is already a mess Apple!! Whoever is in charge of the iTunes / App store needs replacing or put on an organisation course!!!

I was playing with zinio on iPad a few weeks ago and noticed a few times it was trying to load flash content as if it was a web browser.

Blame the publishers they thought they could come out with anything and people will buy it. But the ipad has been out less then a month give it a few months and we will see change

I am also disappointed in Magazine options for the iPad. I'm patient for now and would also agree maybe they need time to come up with Apps/options.

The iPad is still new enough and I'm going to give them the benefit of doubt.
I sure hope they are hard a work tho trying to standardize and give us quality content. If they are not i think they are really missing the boat.
I would gladly pay for several Magazines but would not be willing to do the same for the hard copy.

I tried Zinio and was not impressed, it was very slow. I guess I should try it again and see if maybe it can change my mind. I really like the idea of having numerous Magazines available on my iPad.

iNews

I made this same point months ago... Should have an iNews app for magazines & newspapers - basically anything subscription-based. This wouldn't preclude someone doing their own app, but it'd at least it'd give them a nice unified entry point... just like iBooks doesn't mean someone can't do their own book app. Maybe zinio does a lot of the same thing as iNews would? I haven't used it yet...

Zinio's also international, so Visa charged my card an extra 1.5% for a magazine purchase

Zinio is based in San Francisco, its local for US residents. However if you ordered a international version of a magazine maybe for some reason it charges in the magazines local currency.

Zinio sucks, the app stalls, crashes and is more of a pain in the butt than it's worth and whats more they offer a putrid assortment of garbage magazines.

People give it some time, they are working on it.

I know the NY Times is working on a subscription service right now, and Time is going to have one soon. Its basically a development thing, and sadly they seem to be doing it rather slowly.

I won't be paying for any zinio subs until they fix it so you don't have to stop and wait for every. Single. Page. To render one at a time.

Hmm, weird... I bought "iPhone Life" the first day just to see what it's like and was charged the extra 1ish% All the more reason to not read that anymore, I guess :)

For sure. Apple is quickly losing its rep as a purveyor of clean GUIs. It makes you wonder if the iPad was really a long term project or they just cooked it up last year. Parts of it are just so unpolished and un-Apple.

Zinio released an update today that allows you to play your iPod in the background and fixes some of the slow scrolling.

Funny how some of these old 5-year-old links still work!

Zino is still your best bet. Neither apple nor amazon have a decent selection or purchase model. Zino has been around for years and while not perfect it's the best there is till apple or amazon get it right.

Zino can be very slow at times on the ipad but it's a very full and vibrant experience for a decent price. While individual issues can be as expensive as the news stand, often annual subscriptions save a lot.

A part of my wishes that everything just worked with one method for 'reading'. ie: everything just goes into iBooks. Books, magazines, graphic novels, comics etc. Can't wait until OS4 where we can use folders! But the multiple and customizable screens will have to do for now.

Thank you for this! I have been wanting a motor trend e-view for some time, after reading your post I downloaded Zinio and got a subscription for 7.99!

This reader works great!

As mentioned above Zinio released an update and of course I had to:

Let me be very frank. Zinio is the worst App I have ever tried to use. Since I can't use 4 letter words that's the best I can do.

Zinio is giving digital magizines a bad name. Sluggish, slow and late to focus ever single page. The videos don't even load if there are any in the magazine.

They need to fire those who created that App and start over.
