I didn't like the idea of detaching my iPad from the Magic Keyboard at first either, but it has been an absolute joy to use it that way. I did put protective skins on the back and sides just to keep scuffs and scratches off of it when detached, but I'm loving using it that way. Even the 12.9" feels thin and light to me when there's nothing else attached to it, and that makes it so much easier to use in bed or on the couch.

Still a gen 2 12.9 user here. My big concern with upgrading to newer models is once I pull it off of the keyboard I’m going to want a way to stand it up somehow. I essentially have 3 use cases in hand/flat on a table tablet style, stood on an angle for content consumption or physical keyboard on lap/couch/bed. True desktop use is not a thing for me currently.

Based upon my use cases I’m sure the standard keyboard folio is the best choice for me when I upgrade. I will miss the old keyboard design though, I currently have the back plate of a Logitech case on my 12.9 to give me a kick stand that I use when I pull the Smart Keyboard off. It allows me to hang the iPad on things or stand it at any angle which I like.

I think the idea is you detach it from the case when you want to use it as a tablet and reattach when you want to use it as a "laptop".
Yes, but if you use it as a tablet most of the time, that gets cumbersome really quick. It has to be folded down unless you have a specific spot for it. For the price, I would expect it to work in both configurations, but I guess this appeals to people replacing their laptops more than those that want a tablet with the occasional keyboard use. I prefer the old cover/keyboard since it worked fine in both configurations, didn't add nearly as much weight, and worked for the occasional keyboarding. Of course, the keyboard on this is much nicer, so pick your poison.

I purchased the Magic Keyboard (with my new iPad Pro 11 2020) knowing it wouldn’t fold back. Even if it could have, I would not have wanted to treat a $300 in that manner. As such, I also purchased a Apple Smart Cover and a Torro leather case for times when I need to use my iPad without the Magic Keyboard. The scenario works well for me.

I had my wife craft me a drawing easel because I hated all the ones I saw on Amazon.
