Normally, if you purchased it from Apple, that’s not necessary and wouldn’t work anyway. When the serial number is added the AppleCare software would just pop up an invalid device or coverage not available, some wording like that. When I had my Time Capsule swapped out it was because my AppleCare for my laptop was still in effect. But I had purchased the Time Capsule from Apple so they already had a record of it. I’m not sure how this works when buying from a 3rd party. Having a receipt should be sufficient. But calling in to speak to someone is a good idea, I’m just skeptical that there is any mechanism to add a device that is not covered by AppleCare. Best Buy should have its own coverage available.

Maybe one of them can specifically add the keyboard. But I know in the past when adding a device after purchase if there wasn’t an AppleCare plan for the device inputting the serial number would just pop up some invalid message. I would just keep the receipt. Best Buy should be able to advise on this and should have their own coverage in effect or ability to add coverage. I don’t always get the best price but I normally purchase Apple products only from Apple. They maintain a list of everything you’ve ever purchased from them and coverage will be automatic. Except for when I tried to add that device that didn’t actually have AppleCare coverage. Invalid! But if it’s related to a product that has a plan in effect, such as my laptop did when my Time Capsule failed, they just swap it out. iPad Pro is certainly related to Magic Keyboard.

He did say it’s something new they’re doing. So not sure if that has anything to do with it. Either way, that’s what I’ll be doing so I can report back.

I was told this is not possible. They don’t add the keyboard to the Apple care. The Apple care is on your iPad and the coverage extends to your keyboard and Apple Pencil. Just keep your receipts if anyone questions anything.

Well, spoke with Apple and they added the keyboard to the plan as they said they would. They asked for the serial number of they keyboard. All done. 👍🏽

Do you have a number and what type of person you spoke to (apple care specialist)?

Like to know why people are getting apple care + for a keyboard?

What’s the upside? Are these keyboard known to breakdown easily?

The applecare people buy for their iPads is supposed to also cover your margic keyboard and Apple Pencil for no additional cost. Someone above said they are starting to add it to the policy so it’s something you should look into if you have apple Care. I haven’t had any luck doing so but I think it depends on what department you get routed to.

I started with a chat and was told to call the general number and ask for an AC specialist. It took a while, but finally got an agent who worked with AC.
He said we had to call and submit the s/n of the MKB if it was to be covered by the iPP AC policy. As far as I know, he finally got all the data and numbers.
However, I am frustrated because suddenly we were disconnected. I do not know if calling back will be going through that obstacle course again or if it will upend what might have been completed.
Any projections on where to go with this scenario?
Edited to say the system called me back and confirmed everything then sent an email confirmation. I am leaving the post as it was originally in case it is relevant to others.

You are correct! Finally got routed to the right people (Apple care specialist) and she was able to add my keyboard to my Apple care plan. I checked online and all is good. It did take a little while for her to get it done but I’m glad it’s finally done.
