My wife just purchased the new MacBook Pro which only has USB Type C ports. She needed a mouse so we bought the Magic Mouse 2 only to find out that the included cable is NOT USB C but regular USB so it cannot be plugged into the laptop or the laptop's power brick for charging. Keep in mind that USB C only MacBooks have been out for almost a year now.

I called Apple and explained the situation and their solution was for me to either return the mouse or spend $25 on a USB Type C cable. Looking into this I found out that they are also shipping their new iPhones with regular USB cables. Seriously!??!? Why not ship USB Type C cables if this is the future and include a small adaptor for USB? Or offer the option to buy the product with either USB or USB Type C cable? I mean, Apple did just remove the headphone jack and earbuds... but I guess profits are better than customer experience at Apple nowadays. I'm tempted to return everything ($1,900 MacBook AND mouse) over a $25 cable.

It's all Apple's fault because you didn't do your research....

Perhaps rather than whinge about it here, you could write a POLITE letter to Apple suggesting that they bundle the USB-C to lightning cable for FREE when you buy a magic mouse 2 with a macbook?

They should give a damn about their customers and provide an option to buy an Apple mouse or iPhone 8 that is compatible with their newest laptops that have been out for a year. Of course Apple already knows this is a problem for consumers but their only solution is for us to buy a $25 cable that probably costs them less than $5 to put on the shelf.

As long as people continue to buy those $5 cables for $25, Apple will continue to gladly sell them. Once they stop making their money they’ll cutover to USB-C (and sell a dongle for those that still need the old connector). Win-Win ... for Apple.

Yeah. This bothers me as well. They should add a USB-A to USB-C adapter in the box, many others are doing it. I got a WD My Passport SSD which is USB-C but they include an adapter.

Although it's true that OP "didn't do their research", Apple's been sending a ton of mixed messaged recently.

Some Macs have USB C, other's don't, none of the peripherals are USB C, etc. If they're going to switch to USB C, switch the entire product line or don't do it at all. It's not like Apple is some cash-strapped company that only has the resources to do it in waves. They should be including both lighting to USB A and lightning to USB C in the box or else they shouldn't be using USB C at all.

It would be nice if they offered a native C-to-Lightning cable with some sort of adapter that went to USB-A. But the good news is that the accessory needed to handle this is only 6 bucks :)

That doesn't match the color of my MacBook tho. I'm already stressed due to the magic mouse being glossy white, the MacBook being space gray, and the xbox being a mix of matte black and matte white...with holes. I'm freaking out here!!!

What am I looking @?

They should also design a mouse that you can use while charging but hey that's just me.
I read that you can get a lot of charge from just two minutes of being plugged in...is that not the case?

I've only been using it for a short while...maybe a few hours, but I see 100% still. It seems as tho it would go a few days minimum before needing a charge. For me, that would give ample time to plug in. Also, I find moving it to the desk with the apple logo hanging off allows for it to remain normal side up and charge @ the same time. The OCD in me would flip out if I had to look @ it charging on it's side, lol!?

The best way to give just about anything any permanent color your heart may desire... (although it does require an oven bake!!!)
Almost clicked again, but you lost me @ "oven bake" as I'm not 100% sure the MM2 will respond to guerrilla tactics typically reserved for bringing dead GPU's to life. :D

Update!!!!

I seem to have had a system preference pane for Logitech's software still alive, so I used the Logitech uninstaller (why oh why can't all the uninstalls be in a central locale ala windows pro and fea‽‽‽) after removing the option from the system pref pane and it seems to have removed everything.

At the same time I installed this:
http://magicprefs.com/

I had been using bettertouchtool/snaptool, but it says sensitivity cannot be increased starting with Sierra. Well, magicprefs does indeed increase the sensitivity.

So one or both of those actions seems to have almost completely fixed my complaints about the MM2. I had to nearly double the sensitivity slider in magic prefs, but I'm no longer dragging the damn thing off the pad!

Woot!

YES. Entirely it IS Apple's fault. I too bought the Magic Mouse 2 as I have no idea if it can be detected by a MacBook Pro without some USB-c cable. I have no idea because I have no way to find out without going back to Apple Store. Near zero information on Apple's consumer website. I assume it's a 'no' but can't be sure, to simple question: can the mouse be detected by Bluetooth without being plugged in to MacBook Pro? If I can't find answer to this IT IS FULLY APPLES'S FAULT. It's so time consuming and frustrating to do research for something so elementary it's lawsuit worthy.

Thank you. So, no way for Blutooth to pair with the mouse without the USB-c cable, correct?

What BS from Apple, subjecting customers to this theory chasing. How time consuming to dig out elementary answers! I'm going down to Apple tomorrow to address this and file a complaint. The complaint is not just because they're sending an incomplete kit, but that they don't disclose what equipment is needed at time of purchase. I'm furious.

You CAN pair BT devices without cables. That's actually the original and only option for all BT devices. Only recently did apple automate the pairing via a cable. But again, that's just to simplify it. To pair a device, turn it on and go to System Preferences and choose bluetooth. It should be listed there.

So it is the fault of Apple that you didn’t read this? Also, the Magic Mouse 2 was released well before usb-c was a part of the product line.

Agree, they need to just go all-in on USB-C for all new devices.

All the new iPhones and iPads should be shipping with lightning to USB-C cables only. With USB-C wall adapters.

So, according to you the store buying experience should be:

"Excuse me Apple sales team! Now that you've sold me the MacBook Pro without a USB post and a cable charged mouse, is there anything that would prevent me from getting the two devices to work together?" I'll let you know how it goes at the Apple Store today after I file a raging complaint that, as a consumer, prior to buying, I am forced to 'research' problems existence of which I have no way of knowing. I will take this as far as I can.

Good luck with that. Your histrionics show that you simply cannot be reasoned with by any means. Apple is as likely to call the police as they are to help you.

Apple sells a usb-c to a adapter for 10.00. Buy that instead of the lightning cable and be done with it.

It says clearly in “What’s in the box?”

Magic Mouse 2
Lightning to USB cable

What part of that is so difficult to comprehend?

The otherwise incomprehensible part that, unlike the battery operated mouse, the cable charged mouse CAN NOT be paired with the device without a cable. The mouse needs two cables to be used for its intended purpose, not one. It's wireless only AFTER the initial pairing phase, a process needing that extra device. And that fact is not disclosed. Apple falsely presents the MM2 as a product needing a cable for charging only.

Well that’s odd, because I paired my MM2 with my MacBook Pro just fine without plugging it in.

I'll let you know how it goes at Apple today. The brand new MM2 can not be detected, much less paired, on any of the two Macs in the house (different users).
