You CAN pair BT devices without cables. That's actually the original and only option for all BT devices. Only recently did apple automate the pairing via a cable. But again, that's just to simplify it. To pair a device, turn it on and go to System Preferences and choose bluetooth. It should be listed there.

You can...in theory. That is, it's not true for all devices. Theoretically, my MacBook Pro, which has no USB port, should be able to be instantly paired with MM2 wirelessly. That's NOT the case in reality. Today I went down to Apple Store and raised the issue very directly. As in, I refused to let team members pair the device via a cable adapter. I insisted on wireless pairing. Plainly and simply, they said it can't be done. I asked for explanation and got "Please trust me. I sold you your charger yesterday. I am the guy who helped you. You can trust me. This is the way it's done." I trusted that he didn't want to push the issue further. So, the USB-c cable is not here as some back up. It's mandatory for initial pairing.

Thank you for reaching out to answer my question.

My wife just purchased the new MacBook Pro which only has USB Type C ports. She needed a mouse so we bought the Magic Mouse 2 only to find out that the included cable is NOT USB C but regular USB so it cannot be plugged into the laptop or the laptop's power brick for charging. Keep in mind that USB C only MacBooks have been out for almost a year now.

I called Apple and explained the situation and their solution was for me to either return the mouse or spend $25 on a USB Type C cable. Looking into this I found out that they are also shipping their new iPhones with regular USB cables. Seriously!??!? Why not ship USB Type C cables if this is the future and include a small adaptor for USB? Or offer the option to buy the product with either USB or USB Type C cable? I mean, Apple did just remove the headphone jack and earbuds... but I guess profits are better than customer experience at Apple nowadays. I'm tempted to return everything ($1,900 MacBook AND mouse) over a $25 cable.

Completely infuriating and...true. I just came back from Apple Store with two USB-c cables cause no way in hell was MM2 discoverable wirelessly via bluetooth. (Other devises and mice would pop up, but not the new MM2). Apple team confirmed: initial pairing can only happen with the 'missing' cable on some devices, MacBook Pros among them. Issue 100% on Apple's end, and Apple is not arguing.

It's all Apple's fault because you didn't do your research....

Perhaps rather than whinge about it here, you could write a POLITE letter to Apple suggesting that they bundle the USB-C to lightning cable for FREE when you buy a magic mouse 2 with a macbook?

May you point to a research that states which MacBooks (like with USB-c ports only) can be paired with MM2 wirelessly? Otherwise, please don't suggest 'research.' Official MM2 instructions point right to necessity for a USB-c cable. They are written...you guessed it: in a booklet in a box containing MM2, that is not packed with the said, mandatory for pairing, USB-c cable.

I'll let you know how it goes at Apple today. The brand new MM2 can not be detected, much less paired, on any of the two Macs in the house (different users).

If you plug it in via the cable it pairs right away?

I think Apple should purge all USB Type A cables and power bricks from their products. Then sell the Type A adapter

Are you telling me in your entire house you do not have a USB charging block? My Apple Watch 4 charging wire is plugged into a non apple plug on my extension cord block and OMG it works! I have one of my Kindles plugged into my Old iPad block because it has more watts, yes I know risking life and limb rapid charging a lithium ion battery.

I have even plugged my Apple bluetooth keyboard into the same block as my phone and even charged my mice, yeah we have three. Some of them are even using a Non-Apple Thunderbolt cable. I know you are stunned that an Apple Mouse would allow such abuse and humiliating indignity. I am sure they are screaming, wailing and gnashing of teeth (guessing Blueteeth) but I do not have Siri enabled on my Mouseys.

If you were a Buddhist monk you could set yourself on fire in protest. From the tone in your letter you would not even need a match.

So not a single USB charging block in your entire house? I have I have no idea how many plugged in and a bag of them for back up.

I just got caught in this today. I see this was an issue in 2017 based on the first post. I just bought a 2020 macbook pro, and the laughably named "magic mouse" came with a legacy cable for charging. Really? I remember going through this about twenty years ago with Mac, you know, the confused switchover to oddball ports. At that time I left the ecosystem and started buying PCs. I returned when Apple went back mainstream and ditched the kooky Motorola chips e.g., "Power PC". I see we are entering a new cycle of proprietary expensive madness. Just as I have invested heavily in a good solid Apple ecosystem. Remember how hard it was to find a thunderbolt removable drive? Then the USB connector came back. What a dissapointment if this cycle occurs again!!!! All you fanboys, before you start defending, I don't care. If you have unlimited funds and don't mind filling the landfill with legacy cables, well then good for you!
