it doesn't really work this version is the worst mac version of Apple.
Oh… there’s been worse.
Like the time they released a new OS that did not work with any version of MS Office. And you couldn’t rollback to the old OS. I couldn’t do any work for days until MS released an update.

Same problem here and have this for some months now and it seems entirely related to a system software update... sometimes it works but to my disbelief most of the times (95%) haptic feedback is NOT working. Tried all the possible options (remove, re-connect, re-naming, full loading, turning it off for a day, etc. etc.).
And yes, I have created an "official" bug report at Apple.

I just tried it with mine and the haptic feedback works. By haptic feedback, I assume you mean that I can long press on a Finder icon and see a preview. I don’t know what other haptic features it has, but I assume they’re important to you.

Ah, maybe you are right with the haptic feedback... I always assumed it was the actual clicking of the trackpad, like with a mouse. So, I guess I am in the wrong forum question. My issue with the Magic Trackpad 2 is basically that it does a silent click (you don't hear it anymore) and I want it to make it click when I press. But that doesn't work for a couple of months now.

I just tried mine now, and it seems to work fine.
When the trackpad is turned off, it feels like a solid surface; I can't click on it at all.
With it turned on, I can feel it click. In the "Trackpad" Preference pane, I can choose "Silent clicking" and "Force Click and haptic feedback"

If I enable Silent clicking, the clicks are quieter but I can still hear them. It seems to have no effect on the built-in trackpad, only on the external.
If I disable Force Click, I can still click on things, but if I hold down on a Finder icon, I don't get a pop-up window. This is on a 14" MBP with Monterey 12.1. I'm not sure, but maybe you also need to enable "Look up & data detectors." Last, the sound of the haptic click changes depending on the setting of the "Click" slider.

I hope you're getting the same results.

Mine does work now I am typing this... but oh wait... and its gone again. I just went into the track pad settings and now the clicking is gone completely (same as I experienced for months). Not even silently.
Basically the TP2 of mine behaves as what Alameda earlier describes as "When the trackpad is turned off, it feels like a solid surface; I can't click on it at all.". but then in my case it is turned on! Even though my TP2's on there is no clicking sound at all beside that I can "click" or select things on screen. The TP2 behaves like I am touching a piece of paper with interaction on screen, but no interaction from the paper at all.
In the MT2 settings I have enabled "Force click and haptic feedback". To me, this line of text label has an AND operator, which suggests that I both enable the click mechanism AND haptic feedback by pressing harder with a single finger. But in the end there is NO click mechanism at all or sporadically (meaning not consistent).

I'm sorry you're going through this.
All I can think of is to un-pair it, and then attach it with the USB cable, see how that works, then try a Bluetooth pair. I hope you get it working.

Whatever causes this problem, it's not at all unique to Monterey. My 2012 27" iMac is still running Catalina, and just within the past week, my magic trackpad's haptic feedback disappeared. Rebooting the trackpad will fix it for a bit, but then it stops working again. I don't know wtf is causing it.
I can confirm that I also recently starting hitting this issue and I'm still on Big Sur. Thinking about updating to Monterrey to see if it somehow fixes it, but its definitely infuriating.

Same as all of above with Magic Trackpad 2 on a Late 2009 iMac w/ High Sierra 10.13.6... but:

--turned on an original Trackpad 1, paired with iMac, had same haptic/click issue, turned off Trackpad 1
--turned off Trackpad 2, then turned on and paired it with MacBook Air M1 2020 w/ Monterey 12.0.1
--haptic/click restored on Trackpad 2 while using M1
--turned off Trackpad 2, turned on and re-paired with iMac
--haptic/click restored and working again on iMac/Trackpad 2
--turned on Trackpad 1 previously paired with iMac, haptic/click not working
--later, haptic/click still working with Trackpad 2 after iMac wakes from one hour sleep

Does any of this provide a clue as to what or where the problem is?

Hi All,

I too have the issue where the trackpad feels like its not power up. By this I mean there is no click when you press it. it feels solid. I have purchased a new one today and its working perfectly. One thing I noticed which someone here could check too. When you hold "option key" and click the Bluetooth icon in the top bar you get a load of bluetooth details. When I do this on the failed pad the firmware is all 0.0.0! on the new pad its 8.5.5!

To me its like my Track Pad 2 has lost its firmware?

Anyone else see this too?

Hello all,

I have been having the issue described for the past few weeks both on an intel Macbook Pro with MacOS Catalina installed and on an M1 Macbook Air with MacOS Monterey installed.

Seems that the problem is independant of machine or OS version.

This is no word of a lie, the only solution I have found is to pick the trackpad up, pinch it between your thumb and index finger and swing it around at bit as if it's some sort of fidget spinner. The haptic feedback for the click then returns.

Thanks!

This "pinch & swing" solution of piratebar666 restored previously lost haptic feedback for my Apple Magic Trackpad 2 which is running firmware 1.0.7

I then updated my iMac 15,1 (mid 2015) MacOS Monterey to v12.3 Beta (21E5227a) and continue to have haptic feedback using the Apple Magic Trackpad 2 via bluetooth connectivity.

I have found the solution. You just need to turn off the Magic trackpad for about 15-20 minutes. Then turn it on and reconnect. I think this is due to the software

In my opinion it is definitely a computer's software problem. I have a MacBook Pro running Monterey. The Magic Trackpad 2 is recognised by the computer's Bluetooth, and it works in everything but the haptic. However, in System Preferences/Trackpad/SetUp Bluetooth Trackpad, it reports "No Trackpad Found", even while it is working. If I switch the Trackpad off for a while and back on, it is recognised for a couple of seconds, and then "No Trackpad Found" again. Both anomalies, no haptic and no recognition, must be related. Does anyone replicate this?

I'm having the no haptics issue, and it also shows "No trackpad found" on settings, but I think this message is related to new trackpads not connected to the Mac. If I unpair my trackpad from the computer, settings finds it and pairs it. Have you tried this?

is this still an issue and when you guys say haptic issues is it like that it feels like nothing is clicking?
Correct you don’t ‘feel’ the clicking on the trackpad.
I eventually replaced the trackpad with a new one, which works just fine. So I very much doubt it is a software issue with macOS - the trackpad eventually fails and will need to be replaced.

I have to rectify about my guess that it is a computer’s problem. I just thought of attaching the trackpad to an iPad (9th gen) and the problem remains. As the iPad’s software is so different from the MacBook’s I must conclude that the culprit has to be the trackpad itself. And as it affects so many of them, Apple should take a hand on this.

I believe the newer trackpads use one of Apple's haptic motors to provide the click feedback. They are a linear motor and there is the possibility that the driven element that shakes the trackpad could get stuck. It might be worthwhile to firmly tap the trackpad a couple of times on each edge on a hard surface to see if that would free it up again. I'm not sure which direction the motor is oriented in, horizontally across the width the of the trackpad or vertically across the top to bottom.

The only problem with this solution is that if it did get stuck once, then whatever caused it to stick originally will likely happen again.
